Yuusha-kei ni Shosu: Choubatsu Yuusha 9004-tai Keimu Kiroku

In a world where the title of Hero is treated as a punishment rather than an honor, the worst criminals are sentenced to the front lines of an endless war against the Demon Lords. Branded as Heroes, they are forced into military service without even the mercy of death, condemned to be revived and sent back into battle forever.

Among them is Xylo Forbartz, once a respected commander of the Holy Knights. Now the leader of Penal Hero Unit 9004, he commands a squad of convicts considered expendable by the very nation they serve. During one chaotic mission, he encounters Teoritta, a living weapon known as a Goddess, whose presence threatens to shift the balance of both the war and his own fate.

As the unit is sent on increasingly dangerous operations, Xylo must balance leading his unit, surviving the battles he finds himself in, and uncovering the truth behind his own sentencing.

Nothing much to say here. This show promises great fights and delivers exactly that with great animation. The other characters are pretty good and introduced in a way that the cast doesn't feel bloated or unnecessary since they have different roles and they're never all in the same place at the same time. I like that most of them aren't set up as the usual "misunderstood heroes" but they're mostly actual scumbags that deserved their treatment. The demon blights are one-note so far but since it seems like an introductory season more than anything, it's fine. It's clearly setting up to actual villains later on.

Mixed Feelings

Alright, so I'm going with an overall score of 6/10 for this one, as after watching the whole season I'd say the description 'fine' is the one that resonates the most. Now on to the review.

What's it like:
Let me preface this by saying I've played a lot of the classic Fire Emblem games and the way it's set up this show reminds me a lot of them. Fire Emblem is a tactical RPG in which you progress through the game by beating opposing armies on different battlefields using a set of unique characters. Each level consists of a battle and in between the ... levels story progression and world building are presented through exposition and character dialogue. The stories are fantasy themed and involve multiple factions, politics, monsters, and a lot of scheming and conspiracy. Sentenced to be a Hero is set up in the same way. During each sub-arc we watch the main character and his team of 'heroes' fight out a battle with a demon and its army of monsters, and in between battles there's story progression and world building through exposition and characters discussing in-world politics. The term 'heroes' is used very liberally here, in reality we're talking about an elite army unit of specialized operation forces, fantasy style.

What I liked and disliked:
The series starts off really strong with an action packed first episode with movie quality animation. From the second episode on the animation quality becomes more standard, but it's still perfectly fine. I also really liked our team of heroes. The majority of them have strange but humorous quirks that kept me looking forward to seeing them in action. However, most of them don't have more than one or two moods going on, which makes them come across somewhat flat and superficial. Furthermore, what worked well for Fire Emblem regrettably doesn't work out so well for this anime. Compared to other fantasy anime the lack of visual presentation of what's going on in between battles hurts the sense of immersion. I'm thinking about any traveling, adventuring, or just characters interacting with the world. And, you know, it's of course subjective to a certain degree, but it's kind of a shame that after watching this anime I've got no real clue about what the world even looks like apart from a few set locations or what the culture is like. Also, apart from a few demon lords the monsters are just not very interestingly designed. Most of them are oversized animals and some goblin-likes with glowing fungi growing out of them. I wish they took a bit more effort to come up with cool designs here. Last but not least, there's the trope of the 12 year old girl that's actually an ancient being, and this one's 'personality' consists only of constantly clamoring for attention and praise. That's the whole social contribution of this character. Why? What's fun about any of that? It's easily the least enjoyable thing going on and such a cop out of having to come up with anything of substance. Having said all that, what still kept me looking forward to watching every episode was the action and the weird cast of heroes. The heroes especially carried the show for me. And when it comes to the action there's seldom a dull moment and it just makes the whole thing very much bingeable.

So, all in all, that's why I'd say 6/10 is a fair score here. It's better than average and certainly not bad. Especially during the first half I'd even say the show is 'good', a 7/10. However, 'very good', an 8/10, which is the current community score, I find a bit of a stretch. I'd get it if people score based on bingeability alone, but there's just too much unfulfilled potential here for me to rate it that way.

What the show reminds me of:
The Clevatess anime came out during the same time as Sentenced to be a Hero and hits a lot of similar themes.
I enjoyed that one a lot more, as it's more focussed on adventuring and world building, while still packing a lot of action.
If you enjoyed Sentenced to be a Hero, I'd say give that one a shot as well.

In all honesty, Sentenced to Be a Hero is the biggest letdown of the season. I have so many criticisms of this show, so I’ll start with the first episode. I don’t like the premiere. It gets a lot of praise, but the only thing it truly excels at is its animation. Beyond that, it mishandles nearly everything. The most important aspect is how it fails to explain why people hate heroes. So when Xylo (A hero) saves a group of knights, and the knights mock him for it, the scene feels unnecessarily crude. Instead of making me wonder, “Why are these knights so hateful ... toward heroes?”, it made me think, “Oh, it’s this type of show.” The hostility feels forced rather than intriguing.

The arrangement of scenes throughout the show is problematic. It would benefit greatly from revealing key context earlier. For example, we eventually learn that heroes are hated because they committed terrible crimes, which is an interesting concept. After all, it would feel weird to be saved by a criminal. However, this information is revealed too late in the episode. If it had been introduced earlier, viewers could have understood the knights’ hostility instead of being confused or annoyed by it. Another reveal that comes too late is Xylo’s backstory with the goddesses. The way he treats Teoritta mirrors how the knights treat him. He openly expresses his dislike of goddesses, yet resents being judged himself. This makes him come across as hypocritical, which could be compelling if better contextualized. By introducing his motivations earlier, the audience would have a clearer understanding of his behavior.

The action is flashy but ultimately boring. The show fails to establish a central antagonist early on, so each episode features a different demon lord. These enemies have similar designs and are defeated within the same episode they’re introduced, making them forgettable. On top of that, each character has a very limited set of abilities. Xylo mostly throws swords that explode on impact, while Teoritta summons and throws swords. Their powers lack creativity, and they don’t add any creativity to their powers, making the fights extremely repetitive.

Finally, the story and characters are arguably the strongest aspects. Yet it still falls short compared to better shows. There isn’t much to praise, but they aren’t terrible either. Some ongoing issues include the overly episodic structure, the overused “evil church” trope, and the forced dynamics of the characters, particularly between Xylo and Teoritta, and Xylo and Kivia. Overall, this story has potential, but it feels like it wants to be something greater than what it can ever be. I wouldn’t say the show is horrendous; it certainly gets better later on, but there are too many flaws to recommend.
