Synopsis

While most people find the world mundane, five-year-old Yotsuba Koiwai sees it as a treasure trove of amazing bustle and wonderful places to explore. When she and her adoptive father, Yousuke, move to a new city, the energetic young girl naturally sets out to investigate the neighborhood on her own.

After a few incidents at the local park, the Koiwais become acquainted with their neighbors, the Ayase family. Their three daughters—mischievous college student Asagi, responsible high school student Fuuka, and kindhearted grade school student Ena—eventually all take a liking to Yotsuba and join in on her antics, despite their sheer ridicule.

From learning how to use a swing to figuring out how to stop global warming with air conditioners, Yotsuba's ability to infallibly find fun in everything, both amazes and annoys the people around her. Along with Yousuke, the Ayases, and friends she makes along the way, Yotsuba embarks on daily adventures, each one a step in her quest to enjoy the simple things in life.

Yotsuba to! received the Excellence Award at the 10th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2006. In 2008, the series was nominated for the 12th Osamu Tezuka Culture Award and the Eisner Award in the Best Publication for Kids category. It was also a runner-up for the first annual Manga Taishou award. In 2016, the series was awarded the 20th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Grand Prize, along with Hanagami Sharaku.

The first six volumes were first published in English as Yotsuba&! by ADV Manga from June 6, 2005, to October 31, 2007, before publication was discontinued. Yen Press picked up the license and has published the series since September 15, 2009. It has also been published in Spanish by Norma Editorial since November 2005; in French by Kurokawa since August 17, 2006; in German by Tokyopop since February 20, 2007; and in Polish by Kotori since May 18, 2018.

"Yotsuba to" is not exactly a series that requires a long review to list all of its greatest strengths, as pretty much all its most wonderful aspects lie in its simplicity and commitment to keeping itself very grounded.

The series is truly exceptional and depicting the essence of childhood wonder and joy of living, discovering the world around you every day. Yotsuba herself is a wonderfully sweet protagonist, simply a kid that has seemingly endless reserves of energy and joy. I think that makes it a great read for pretty much everybody, both kids and adults, as both groups will find something they resonate with. The ... strength of the world lies in its rich depictions of the everyday. It teaches the reader to never stop being curious, having fun and to see the beauty of the world. Each chapter depicting (at the moment of writing this) roughly half a year of her life on a daily basis, truly shows that each day is a wonder, full of adventure, if you look for it.

It might not be as didactic as something like let's say "Bluey", as "Yotsuba to" doesn't quite offer a lot of insight into parenting. Yousuke is pretty much a freshly baked single father and he tries his best to be the best parent to Yotsuba as he can be. Frankly, I think the series is at its strongest when it portrays those lovely father-daugther moments, when he teaches her a lesson or they just goof around together. One another aspect I love is the focus on the community of their little neighborhood, how the kids constantly play together and how every adult participates in raising every child. It builds this wonderful sense of community that helps and supports each other. In that way, it also speaks to its mature readers to be that kind of adult, to participate and let kids, just be kids, to never kill their curiosity or to give them the space and opportunity to do what they do best.

I wish the series had a bit more firm stance on teaching Yotsuba life lessons, as I feel like bar a few notable exceptions like a delightful chapter about lying or painting, the series doesn't always know how to approach teaching her. While it is in line with Yousuke not being the most experience parent, between giving her noogies and occasionally scolding her, the response to her throwing a tantrum or crying is usually to relent, even practiced by characters other than Yousuke. While the series is not meant to be didactic, I wish the series would challenge that notion a bit more often. The chapters where Yotsuba learns responsibility are often highlights in their respective volumes. Even if the methods can get more or less extreme. There is slight hint of storytelling about Yousuke becoming a more responsible and overall better parent, but it doesn't feel like its utilized to its full potential.

All the other cast members also build quite a diverse array of personalities who wonderfully bounce off of Yotsuba, between Jumbo, Yanda, Ena, Fuuka, Asagi, Torako, Shimau and Miura, they all have something to offer to enrich the world of the manga. In spite of the cast being pretty big, it never feels crowded, as everybody has a perfectly designated role and they all fulfill different roles. Only complaint would be that the series can feel a bit mean spirited towards Fuuka, as the main joke of her character is that people are insulting her out of the blue, while she never really did anything to warrant that kind of punishment. While it feels in line with the series comedy, it does still stand out just a little bit, as more cynical than the rest of the happy-go-lucky approach the series has.

The humor in general is also a pretty great aspect of the series, as it lends itself perfectly to telling this story. Kids are naturally funny, they do silly things, blurt things out, don't really understand everything going on quite yet. Yotsuba is the pinnacle of that approach, her happy-go-lucky attitude paired with her boundless curiosity creates a perfect blend for comedy. It's that kind of jokes that makes the readers want to cherish her and smile at everything she does.

With Yotsuba being such a complex and sweet kid, I can only wonder who she would group up to be. As many manga often do a sort of epilogue chapter that's set 10 or so years in the future, I must say, I never quite yearned for one as much as I do with this series. I'm not exactly sure if the series would do it, as it would sort of break the illusion of her always being a child, but I admit it would be a wonderfully bold move that I would love to see.

It's a simply joyous read that's hard not to recommend. It very much deservingly so finds itself in some of the highest manga on this website. Pretty much everything about this series screams pure joy and puts a smile on one's face, the story blends appreciating childhood as well as keeping childlike wonder forever perfectly.

My face hurts from smiling so much. Yotsuba&! is one of the best pieces of fictional media ever made.

And somehow, it manages to be this good while not having many of the impressive traits that define the most acclaimed entertainment media. From a critical view; the characters are great- but not complex. The plot is barebones. The art, while great, isn’t impressively detailed (the expressions and paneling is amazing, though). The lessons and themes are not inherently thought-provoking or unique. The jokes are silly and often pretty stupid.

I didn't enjoy the first volume of Yotsuba&. This does NOT mean it is a bad manga. I can see the appeal, but the real dealbreaker for me was Yotsuba's antics. She's a kid, so of course she'll act like a kid, but that sort of humor doesn't appeal to me as much as it does to other readers.

I would also like to say I've read Azumanga Daioh, which is also by the same person and I liked it a lot better. I think it's because I preferred the structure of school instead of the sort of open-endedness Yotsuba&'s plot offers.
