Yomi no Tsugai

In an isolated village, two twins were born, separated by day and night. It is years later, and while the older brother Yuru has become a hunter of animals, his sister Asa has been locked away in a cage, ordered to perform a special duty that prohibits her from meeting more than a few select individuals.

On an otherwise inconspicuous day, a group of armed men riding in helicopters, referred to as "dragons" by the citizens, assaults the village in search of Yuru, killing every adult on sight. When Yuru attempts to meet up with Asa and flee, he finds a dead body instead—on top of that, the person who killed her claims to be Yuru's true twin sister.

Before the woman can capture him, Yuru is rescued by a man named Ryuu "Dera" Tadera, an outsider who frequently visits the village. However, it is not long before the two are cornered. In a last-ditch effort, Dera makes Yuru give a gift to the deity of the village, summoning a pair of daemons whose existence is bound to reveal the truth behind these chaotic events.

Quite an interesting start, to an interesting premise.

That's what you get when you watch Yomi no Tsugai.

Story and characters: 8
What I love in regards to it's story, is a sense of mystery on such. Making you think on 'who is actually good, and who is actually bad' a plot device that'll carry this series far, and if they keep it going, it could be an anime of the season to keep up with and more so. Like whats the full story behind the village? Whats the story behind this supposed dysfunctional family? Whats the story behind daemons in general? Like you get the ... feeling there is more to the story which meets the eye. If they can keep that up, then the series will go far.

As for the characters themselves. It's quite a different cast. Which can come off as realistic in parts, while still maintaining a level of personality beyond that. Which just furthers the trust issue you can have with this series. Take Asa for example, there is moments throughout that really can make you think her heart is in the right place, and she isn't heartless. The village seems normal, as if they dunno themselves why they're being attacked and such. Follow that up with Yuru's realistic reaction to things, and you can tell he's in for a bumpy ride. With the trust issue, makes you wonder who to actually root for.

This series has 24 episodes, so hopefully more can be expanded on such, and keep having an interesting ride going and going.

Art and Sound: 8
The art and sound is really well done. The way everything looks, and coloured, along with the flow of the attacks and animation. It's one that has seemingly done with care and character. As if they left no details unchecked and such. Like I do love certain parts that really fit the mood and setting each and every scene. Great stuff on both ends. While followed up by a great, and well acted voice cast. Good stuff all round.

Defo one to keep up with this seaosn for sure.

It’s like JJK/JoJo except boring. I complied with the three episode rule before dropping this. Power system consists of supernatural entities that protects its holder and isn’t visible to the average Joe. Even the blend of effective modern weapons and a genderbent Edward Elric isn’t enough to save this show. The characters from the village being astonished at contemporary life isn’t interesting at all; Maybe if they were historical figures it would’ve been more entertaining but no, it’s just a copy paste Alphonse who’s skilled with a wooden bow besting assault rifles. Speaking of Full Metal, the art of this anime fumbled by copying the ... style of FMAB instead of the OG- the chubby faces gets mogged by the superior adaptation that is FMA. Characters so far are quite drab with no real sustenance. The main character sees awful stuff happen and yet doesn’t affect him at the slightest. His worldview was turned upside down but I couldn’t even spot a frown nor internalized rage and confusion; Especially towards a specific someone. The animation is pretty fluid and camerawork is excellent on tracking combat. With all things considered, I’d rather rewatch Ushio & Tora than Midmons Of The Generic Realm.

The author of FMA/FMAB herself could not convince me that this is her work.

Let's address the elephant in the room. If this had no association with FMA/FMAB it couldn't touch a 6.5 with an extra set of hands. I am not even a big fan of FMA/FMAB. It's a good anime that had a great conclusion thus making it a great anime. The things THAT anime did well did NOT carry over. FMA/FMAB was a fully fleshed out world where all the interactions felt held together by a system tested and hammered by the author until it was a pristine universe. Watching the first three ... episodes of Yomi no Tsugai made me feels like you stumbled upon a middle schooler's rough draft. As of writing this I am still utterly shocked by the characters inability to showcase sensical emotions given the events that are happening around them. Imagine someone seeing there pet get ran over right in front of them but they are too preoccupied with finishing there door dash order. "Damn dude you killed Fido, I was gonna give him my chicken wing bones :(" It was 13-14 years ago (yes you can call me Unc) and I still remember what that man did to his family in the name of science in FMA/FMAB. Every attempt at humor so far has fallen short and there is already two annoying characters in a cast of 6-7 main characters. What the hell happened? This anime is simply cashing in on the legacy of its predecessor and I won't be apart of the mockery. I'll let it slide with a 5 but do know that is me being kind.
