Vinland Saga Season 2

After his father's death and the destruction of his village at the hands of English raiders, Einar wishes for a peaceful life with his family on their newly rebuilt farms. However, fate has other plans: his village is invaded once again. Einar watches helplessly as the marauding Danes burn his lands and slaughter his family. The invaders capture Einar and take him back to Denmark as a slave.

Einar clings to his mother's final words to survive. He is purchased by Ketil, a kind slave owner and landlord who promises that Einar can regain his freedom in return for working in the fields. Soon, Einar encounters his new partner in farm cultivation—Thorfinn, a dejected and melancholic slave. As Einar and Thorfinn work together toward their freedom, they are haunted by both sins of the past and the ploys of the present. Yet they carry on, grasping for a glimmer of hope, redemption, and peace in a world that is nothing but unjust and unforgiving.

s1 after rewatching was colonization. children, mothers, families, lives were lost to set the stage for s2. King Canute, the Vikings, the history we see from this show is REAL HISTORY with a fictional focus on Thorfinn — a character who is representing the children that were born from these wars, this era, and how history is being repeated, how children are being indoctrinated as we speak, HOW YOU ARE.

s2 made me realize ... enemies are made by the governments to Divide and Conquer. Pirates, mobs, gangs, Vikings, they are not the enemies of the world but cultured into a world of war and slavery. the government calls them savages but uses them, indoctrinates them, then casts them aside.

seeing the reviews made me realize why and how politics works. people love fighting. so i ask people to watch this and think of Thorfinn’s question:

“Is there anywhere that war and slavery have not touched?”
because it has.
“Would it be possible to rid the world of war and slavery?”
because it can.

S2E10 Einar says to Thorfinn:
“Together, we turned an entire forest into a farm. If only all of this land were ours.”
world peace is possible.

my parents were watching a religious show: The Chosen. In S2 they explored the Biblical story of John and James who created a farm in the same way. Upset that Jesus told them to cultivate land that was not owned by them, a lesson not answered?

It’s a lesson answered in a way to show that no matter how corrupt the land, how bloody the soil has been tainted, how many people were forced to cultivate this land, that there is nowhere else to go but to turn this land into something worth living on, to create life from more life. how the Vinland Saga S2 shows not to burn a forest to spread death, but to transform a forest into the spread of more life, to create Vinland.

Season 1 defined Love (Love/Hate), that “love” isn’t something a human possesses but an Unconditional Passion, a Godlike Passion — Love/Hate, that this Passion (Love/Hate) is both the human social constructs known as “love” and “hate.”

In S2E13 Thorfinn is eavesdropping on Snake (take note of his symbolic name) who is reading the bible and states:
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” — dubbed
“You must love your neighbor and continue to love your enemies” — translated

but love and hate, it’s nothing but a definition. a social construct. (this is why the law doesn’t work btw. it’s called “court language”). to “love” and “hate” like God would be to have Passion like God, a Love/Hate that is Unconditional.

the world would have peace if we all followed that verse from S2E13:
To have Unconditional Passion is the only truth of this world we know. Love/Hate that is balanced for it an Unconditional Law.
Let there be Light meaning Dark. A balance.

Balance of Passion:
Love = Hate = Unconditional Passion ≠ human emotions like "love" and "hate"

So I say to you:
Have Passion for your enemy as you would have Passion for your neighbor, friend, brother, sister, spouse, partner, family, or even a stranger. For you have no enemies but the world will tell you that you have enemies. In a world of choice, I tell you to choose to create a place for a better tomorrow — Vinland.

The amount of missing content and time skips made this less enjoyable a watch than it would otherwise have been. I'm not sure if the missing content was there in the source material or not, and I don't care, but when you show me Thorfinn as a slave (which from S1 we knew he'd never accept) and give me 0 explanation when we're 20 episodes in, it pisses me off. When in one scene X character says "we can use [Y character]", and then everything that this line refers to is skipped and we just see the result with no explanation of what happened, I'm ... even more pissed. When you cut *critical* content to give long screen time to dreams and hallucinations that are completely irrelevant to what's actually going on in the real world, well, you get the picture. There is a brief explanation (<30 seconds) a couple episodes before the end, but that's it; it still doesn't sit well with me.

In season 2, the action was toned down, life has slowed down, anti-war sentiment goes as strong as ever, we do see progress, all is good. It's appropriately heavy, and it's still entertaining enough to watch (at least for me), although a bit slower than what I'd have liked. The animation quality is as great as ever, sound is an 8.5/10 (some sound effects are wrong/misplaced, most are great), OP/ED are not my style but the music is good anyway.

It could've been an 8-9 season for me, but the choices of what to show and what to skip is taking this down. Yet somehow, few/none other reviews mention this. Fellas, did you watch a different thing? Are you okay with these skipped scenes in favor of long, slow, pointless dreams? Anyway, it's worth a watch, and I guess since most people didn't even notice or care, you likely won't either.

The series was filled with so much anti-war sentiment that I feel like I need to rewatch Vikings, Overlord, or Youjo Senki... Viking Gandhi was not on my bingo card.

I really loved season 1 and thought it was incredible but season 2.... it still had moments but was really underwhelming. It took a great action packed story with great characters, changed a lot about several of them and cut out a lot of the action. The first several episodes barely even have anything happen, it barely feels like the same show and every time it feels like things are about to get interesting it cuts that off. I'm not mad I just... I just felt confused and disappointed wondering what happened to the amazing show that season 1 had. Honestly it's got slower pacing ... than some of the slowest arcs in One Piece
