Vinland Saga

Young Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of old sailors that had traveled the ocean and reached the place of legend, Vinland. It's said to be warm and fertile, a place where there would be no need for fighting—not at all like the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not like his current life as a mercenary. War is his home now. Though his father once told him, "You have no enemies, nobody does. There is nobody who it's okay to hurt," as he grew, Thorfinn knew that nothing was further from the truth.

The war between England and the Danes grows worse with each passing year. Death has become commonplace, and the viking mercenaries are loving every moment of it. Allying with either side will cause a massive swing in the balance of power, and the vikings are happy to make names for themselves and take any spoils they earn along the way. Among the chaos, Thorfinn must take his revenge and kill Askeladd, the man who murdered his father. The only paradise for the vikings, it seems, is the era of war and death that rages on.

Vinland Saga is honestly a massive impact — a real masterpiece experience. At the time of this review, only two seasons have been released, yet they feel completely different from one another.

The anime stands out thanks to its strong diversity in atmosphere and thematic depth, as everything changes dramatically between Season 1 and Season 2.

Season 1 focuses heavily on action and combat. The protagonist’s development is quite unique, as Thorfinn remains emotionally trapped in his obsession with revenge. We follow a child growing through violence and warfare, developing physical strength while failing to truly understand himself, constantly living in the shadow of the man he ... hates the most.

Even so, this first season is outstanding. The storytelling, artwork, direction, and animation are all extremely strong, creating an intense and gripping experience.

Season 2, however, takes a completely different direction. With far less action, it becomes quieter but equally compelling. The story shifts toward personal introspection, human relationships, social bonds, and psychological healing.

This contrast between the two seasons is precisely what makes Vinland Saga so powerful. The anime encourages deep reflection, explores multiple aspects of human nature, and delivers remarkably believable character growth.

Visually, the animation remains consistently beautiful and enjoyable throughout. Honestly, there are very few negatives to mention. It’s a mature, thoughtful, and impactful anime — and I’m eagerly waiting for what comes next.

Favorite character: Askeladd.

Vinland Saga opens like a sweeping Viking epic, windswept and blood-soaked, promising a story about revenge, survival, and the search for meaning in a brutal age. From the first scene, the narrative drops into a world where honor, power, and violence shape nearly every aspect of life. Battles define political ambition. Loyalty is constantly tested. Survival often demands choices that blur the line between heroism and cruelty. At the center of the story stands Thorfinn, a boy whose childhood is shattered by violence. Early life revolves around admiration for a father who once left the battlefield behind in pursuit of peace. That father, Thors, had ... once been feared as a powerful warrior among the Vikings before abandoning war to live in a remote Icelandic settlement. The ideal of a “true warrior” who no longer needs to fight becomes one of the most important philosophical foundations of the series. That fragile peace collapses when mercenaries led by Askeladd lure Thors into a trap. The ambush results in Thors sacrificing his life to protect others, an event that leaves a permanent mark on Thorfinn. Witnessing the death of a father who believed in peace creates a deep contradiction within the boy. Rage and grief gradually replace innocence. Instead of seeking revenge, Thorfinn follows Askeladd and joins the mercenary group responsible for the attack. The choice transforms childhood into a life spent on battlefields. Over time Thorfinn becomes a highly skilled fighter, participating in raids and wars across England while waiting for chances to challenge Askeladd in formal duels. The strange dynamic between enemy and mentor becomes one of the most compelling aspects of the early narrative.

The story unfolds during the violent conflicts between Danish forces and the kingdoms of England. Viking armies raid villages, seize territories, and participate in shifting alliances shaped by political ambition. Among these power struggles appears Canute, a timid Danish prince whose gradual transformation into a determined leader adds another philosophical layer. Throughout the series, the narrative explores heavy themes involving the cycle of hatred, the emptiness of vengeance, and the possibility of redemption. Thorfinn’s journey gradually moves from a life consumed by revenge toward a search for meaning beyond violence. The legend of Vinland itself, a distant land said to exist beyond the endless wars of Europe, becomes a symbolic destination representing hope for a different way of living. However, the structure of the story often leans heavily toward relentless action. Large portions of the narrative revolve around battles, raids, and survival struggles. Running, fighting, shouting, and killing dominate many sequences. Moments of introspection and philosophical reflection appear throughout the story but are often overshadowed by the constant return to violent conflict. Some side characters show strong narrative potential, particularly Askeladd and Canute, whose personalities occasionally shine through moments of strategy and ideological conflict. But many supporting characters function primarily as tools to move the story forward. This approach leaves certain emotional threads feeling less explored than the story’s themes might suggest. Pacing also varies considerably across different arcs. Some sections linger in gradual character development, whilst others move rapidly through important turning points. This uneven rhythm make the narrative feel inconsistent, especially during major transitions in Thorfinn’s personal journey.

Worldbuilding initially appears immersive with icy shorelines, war camps, remote villages, and sprawling battlefields, creating the atmosphere of a harsh medieval world. Even so, deeper elements such as historical politics, religious influence, and cultural structures often remain in the background. The Viking setting sometimes feels less like a fully explored historical ecosystem and more like a stage for personal conflicts and battles. The broader political dynamics of the war between Denmark and England, for instance, are rarely explored beyond the immediate movements of armies and shifting battlefields. While the conflict provides the narrative backdrop, the motivations and political tensions driving these campaigns are only lightly addressed. As a result, the war occasionally feels more like a perpetual state of violence rather than a historically grounded struggle between competing powers. Similarly, the internal structure of Viking society itself receives limited attention. Ideas of honor, leadership, and warrior culture are present, but the social hierarchy, everyday life, and cultural norms that shape these communities remain only partially explored. The narrative shows the brutality of raids and the ambitions of war leaders, yet it seldom pauses to examine how Viking society actually functions beyond the battlefield. Religious dynamics are also touched upon but rarely examined in depth. The tension between Norse beliefs and the expanding influence of Christianity appears occasionally, particularly through characters connected to the Danish court, yet these elements rarely develop into a sustained exploration of faith, ideology, or cultural transformation. Considering how central religion was to the medieval world, this limited exploration can make the historical setting feel somewhat narrower than its premise initially suggests.

The visual presentation reflects similar inconsistencies. Certain scenes deliver striking imagery and intense combat choreography, particularly during large-scale battles. While several battle sequences are visually striking, the animation occasionally becomes restrained in quieter moments. At other times the animation becomes noticeably stiff. Environmental motion is often minimal, which can reduce the sense that the world itself is alive and constantly shifting. Color design also contributes to the atmosphere but introduces its own limitations. A muted, desaturated palette reinforces the bleak tone of the story, yet this approach sometimes causes different scenes to blend into a similar gray atmosphere that reduces visual contrast between moments. Sound design follows a restrained style that does not always support the emotional intensity of the narrative. Extended stretches of silence appear throughout several episodes, occasionally leaving dramatic scenes feeling underpowered. The soundtrack itself varies in effectiveness, with some moments strengthened by music while other important sequences unfold without strong audio support. Voice performances carry conviction, although emotional delivery sometimes relies heavily on shouting rather than quieter expressions of tension.

Despite these shortcomings, Vinland Saga remains notable for its thematic ambition. The story attempts to present an anti-war message within a setting dominated by violence and revenge. Through Thorfinn’s transformation, the narrative explores the psychological cost of hatred and the difficulty of choosing peace in a world where brutality often appears unavoidable. Strengths emerge from the philosophical depth of its themes, the gradual psychological evolution of Thorfinn, and the raw portrayal of a harsh historical environment. Weaknesses include repetitive sequences of violence, uneven pacing, inconsistent animation quality, underdeveloped supporting characters, and historical elements that remain largely surface-level. For anyone willing to engage with its slow and often grim progression, the series offers a thoughtful reflection on vengeance, identity, and the possibility of redemption. For others, the cold tone, technical inconsistencies, and emotional distance may make the journey feel more exhausting than rewarding.

Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. Horrible, unique story. The main character is the most annoying kid making the most stupid illogical decisions. It never eases on the stupidity; full throttle till the end! He has no redeeming qualities. He just goes full retard.
There is no reason to like the main character. It's not even clear what the point of the story is. A cautionary tale of what happens when you're too stupid?
Other characters exist, but they are overshadowed by the constant stupidity of the main character.

The animation is nice visually, but that's not enough to make this crap watchable. It fooled me, don't let it fool you!
