Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Simon and Kamina were born and raised in a deep, underground village, hidden from the fabled surface. Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon bent on making a name for himself, while Simon is a timid young boy with no real aspirations. One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above.

In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the "Beastmen," humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called "Gunmen." Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unraveling a galaxy-sized mystery.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is about everything that is good about humanity.

Its about fighting back against oppressors, that even from humble beginnings you can create something great.

Its about following in the footsteps of the people that are lost along the way.

Its about doing whats right, even if the right decision is the hardest one.

Its about a better tomorrow, taking one step forewards so our children can take two.

... Everything that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann stands for is admirable. Progress is what humanity is designed for. Progress will always defeat anything that tries to reverse it.

Life should be united in the maintenance of life. For families, friends, society, comrades, and those who have fallen. If life can continue than it should, and its everyones responsibility to help, that is the Gurren Lagann way.

TLDR: My review is the review that creates the heavens!

Mixed Feelings

I really don't like battle shounen. And I like mecha even less.

However, a fansub group had bothered to make a fan translation of this old anime in my obscure language and took its name from it, so I thought it might have something in it.

Expected battles in some apocalyptic wasteland, and perhaps some buried mystery akin to Fallout. The vaults, that is, the underground villages, were explored less than I had hoped for, but the backstory managed to surprise.

So wow. Just wow. This anime managese to surpass itself, and then surpass itself even more, and then surpass itself even more, multiple times again. Indeed ... to drill through the ceiling. And there is also laugh factor and memorable quotes, as the intensity is insane.

It's not good per se, but the wow factor and jaw opening factor is impressive. A bit like Evangelion. Worth watching, although not very deep. But manages to carry all its posturing with honour. 7/10.

Gurren Lagann is a series that sacrifices its soul for the sake of scale. While it starts with a compelling, gritty sense of adventure, it ultimately fails to survive its own narrative choices.

The Kamina Factor: Kamina is the only element that truly works. He provides the charisma, the stakes, and the motivation. Without him, the show loses its magnetic north, leaving a void that the rest of the cast—especially Simon—never quite fills.

Narrative Decay: Everything following the initial arc feels like a different, lesser show. The "Spiral Power" logic becomes a lazy plot device, replacing genuine tension with nonsensical power-ups.

Scale Without Substance: Moving from underground drills ... to throwing galaxies isn't "epic"—it's exhausting. By abandoning logic for pure noise, the series loses the heart that made the early episodes watchable.

EVERYTHING PAST EPISODE 9 IS BULLSHIT !!
