Spy x Family

Corrupt politicians, frenzied nationalists, and other warmongering forces constantly jeopardize the thin veneer of peace between neighboring countries Ostania and Westalis. In spite of their plots, renowned spy and master of disguise "Twilight" fulfills dangerous missions one after another in the hope that no child will have to experience the horrors of war.

In the bustling Ostanian city of Berlint, Twilight dons the alias of "Loid Forger," an esteemed psychiatrist. However, his true intention is to gather intelligence on prominent politician Donovan Desmond, who only appears rarely in public at his sons' school: the prestigious Eden Academy. Enlisting the help of unmarried city hall clerk Yor Briar to act as his wife and adopting the curious six-year-old orphan Anya as his daughter, Loid enacts his master plan. He will enroll Anya in Eden Academy, where Loid hopes she will excel and give him the opportunity to meet Donovan without arousing suspicion.

Unfortunately for Loid, even a man of his talents has trouble playing the figure of a loving father and husband. And just like Loid is hiding his true identity, Yor—who is an underground assassin known as "Thorn Princess"—and Anya—an esper who can read people's minds—have no plans to disclose their own secrets either. Although this picture-perfect family is founded on deception, the Forgers gradually come to understand that the love they share for one another trumps all else.

If it weren’t for the blood and softcore violence, this could actually be a PG anime that the whole family can watch. Spy x Family is a wonderful blend of spy-thriller, action-espionage, and Slice-of-Life comedy. It does extremely well at taking the elements of undercover superhero-family tropes and turning it into this hilarious mishmash of high-stakes action and hilarious moments. The show is massively entertaining, it has very little to no fan-service, and it is very very funny. The moment I saw Anya in the first episode I was already hooked. Anya is the funniest and most adorable anime character I've ever seen. Keep in ... mind the comedy here isn’t the same cringe, exaggerated, or annoying comic-relief you would typically see in Shonen anime. Despite how ridiculous the premise sounds, the writing for this anime is actually top-notch, and it is genuinely entertaining. Essentially three people agree to create a fake family as camouflage for their own personal interests. However, neither family member knows the true identity of the other. This makes it even funnier because you’ll see how each character tries to interpret the behavior of the other person. It's also entertaining to see everyone’s reactions when they completely miss the mark. Basically, it’s the characters' funny reactions, facial expressions, and internal monologues that makes this show an absolute treat to watch. The episodes are all tied together, and you'll see the Forger family’s story progress as they learn to live out this fake life together. If you tire from generic Shonen with great visuals and horrible writing, and you want something a bit more light-hearted, funny, and family-focused, then I HIGHLY recommend you to check this out.

Mixed Feelings

[Hood Review]

I can see why people rock with this anime, but me personally? It was super mid. It’s basically a slice-of-life sitcom anime with spy themes sprinkled in. If you coming in expecting jaw-dropping moments, crazy plot twists, edge-of-your-seat suspense, or real danger where it feel like somebody might die… you not getting that here.

This is more of a chill family anime, and that’s cool for the people who like that vibe, it’s just not my cup of tea.

Now I’ll keep it real: the animation was clean, and the fight scenes were actually pretty decent for a family-style anime. They definitely put effort into that. ... But Anya? Man… the daughter was super annoying to me. And I got kids, so that says something lol.

But overall, every episode felt predictable and random. One episode about cooking, next episode about meeting somebody family, next one about baseball, then throw in a little spy mission and call it a day. It never really felt like it was building toward anything major.

Nothing terrible about it… just nothing special either.

Spy x Family, or more apt, Reddit: The Anime.

If you want something besides "wholesome Loid x Yor moment", you'll be sorely disappointed. It's just bad gag reels over and over again - once you've read the premise, you've seen the show, because it doesn't grow beyond its core gimmick. The show's terrible writing is apparent early on - Loid is supposed to be a world-class spy, yet still blushes and gets flustered around women. This is, of course, because the anime doesn't want him to lose relatability points - god forbid we alienate the audience in any way.

Besides that, nothing in this anime feels natural. ... Ah yes, the wife happens to be an assassin, and her brother happens to be a secret state agent... it's just a bunch of out-of-place gimmicks interacting with each other - forget character writing or development. The anime also doesn't even contain a modicum of tension, because it devolves into episodic nonsense instead of following a through line. You might enjoy it if you turn your brain off, but have our standards really fallen that low?

All in all, the worst impulses of anime concentrated into one. Don't watch.
