Synopsis

Following the First-Class Mage Exam, the trio—elven mage Frieren, warrior Stark, and first-class mage Fern—gains access to the dangerous Northern Plateau. As the party presses onward toward Aureole, formidable adversaries force Stark to confront his insecurities, solidifying his resolve and his role as the party's frontliner. Meanwhile, Fern continues to cherish the gifts she has been blessed with throughout her life, each a reminder of those she holds dear.

Frieren—still honoring her vow to understand humanity—revisits memories of her journey with the Hero's party and her fleeting encounter with a legendary figure. As she reflects on the passage of time, the elven mage quietly questions whether she has truly changed, yet in the small, almost subtle choices that she makes, there are signs that she might have become more human than she realizes.

Frieren S2 arrives at an unusual nexus in the anime world — Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia are routinely criticized for lacking in complex storytelling, yet nevertheless carry audience polls and box office sales due to their combat, hype, and overall hopeful tone. On the flip side, both Chainsaw Man and Dandadan are enormously popular as anime and especially celebrated for their nuanced and unique storytelling, yet manga readers in particular have recently been roiled over highly questionable plot decisions.

Considered by itself, Frieren is already a strange entry: its core DNA is a meditative, even philosophical SOL, yet the story is frequently punctuated by ...

Mixed Feelings
“The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies.”

The above quote dear reader perfectly sums up my feelings about Frieren season 2. After the trust I put into this anime, the tedious war I went on to defend and preserve its name, to say I was disappointed is an understatement. But in which ways and to what extent was I betrayed?, let's find out.

1 - Characters - This is the most important aspect of any character driven show - which Frieren without a doubt falls under. The first season offered a masterclass to the anime community on how to write characters ...

Season 2 of Frieren is unfortunately a bit of a disappointment. The story struggles to find its footing, lacking the sense of purpose and emotional weight that made the original so captivating. It's not unwatchable, but it does leave you wondering what direction the season was trying to go in.
The shorter runtime is perhaps the biggest issue. It feels like the season needed more time to breathe and develop into something meaningful. Rather than rushing a follow-up to meet demand, a longer wait with more content might have served both the story and the fanbase much better.
Frieren built such a devoted audience because it took ...
