Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru

High school student Wakana Gojou spends his days perfecting the art of making hina dolls, hoping to eventually reach his grandfather's level of expertise. While his fellow teenagers busy themselves with pop culture, Gojou finds bliss in sewing clothes for his dolls. Nonetheless, he goes to great lengths to keep his unique hobby a secret, as he believes that he would be ridiculed were it revealed.

Enter Marin Kitagawa, an extraordinarily pretty girl whose confidence and poise are in stark contrast to Gojou's meekness. It would defy common sense for the friendless Gojou to mix with the likes of Kitagawa, who is always surrounded by her peers. However, the unimaginable happens when Kitagawa discovers Gojou's prowess with a sewing machine and brightly confesses to him about her own hobby: cosplay. Because her sewing skills are pitiable, she decides to enlist his help.

As Gojou and Kitagawa work together on one cosplay outfit after another, they cannot help but grow close—even though their lives are worlds apart.

TL;DR: A humorous and visually polished romcom with strong cosplay elements, held back slightly by unexpected fanservice and a sadly forgettable soundtrack.

While I would consider it a romance comedy first and foremost, the secondary tag is very much ecchi. If that isn’t something you’re comfortable with, this probably won’t be for you; and yes, it is very much focused on the male POV.

The story itself is fairly simple, but it’s consistently fun and carried well by the humour throughout. I mostly watched this passively on ... a second monitor, though it could easily hold your attention as a main-focus watch too. The animation is great, with a vibrant colour palette and plenty of nice accent details in the character designs. I was also pleasantly surprised by the variety of settings used throughout the show.

Initially, I expected there to be a much stronger focus on MC-kun’s doll-making, with it serving as the core component of the series. Instead, it quickly shifts into more of a background element and becomes a vehicle for the story’s events. I didn’t really mind this change though, as the move toward cosplay dress-making and everything surrounding it was engaging in its own right. You can tell the creators did their research.

There are definitely moments where the fanservice feels a little ham-fisted, and I think if the series had leaned harder into advertising itself as ecchi from the start, those moments might not have felt quite so jarring.

The characters overall are well written, though most of them clearly cater toward a male perspective. I found myself caring much more about the central cast than some of the supporting characters, but there wasn’t anyone I outright disliked.

The plot is fairly linear, but it never really drags thanks to the comedy and romantic tension constantly pushing things forward. If you enjoy romance series and can look past the ecchi scenes, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy this. I’d also recommend it to anyone with an interest in dresses, fashion, or cosplay culture, since those elements are very much at the heart of the story.

The soundtrack was probably the weakest part of the show for me, though my expectations weren’t especially high to begin with. The opening and ending themes are perfectly serviceable, but neither really captured the mood of the series or stood out in any memorable way. They fit the show well enough, but they’re not tracks I’d ever add to a Spotify playlist.

Overall, while it doesn’t reinvent the genre, it executes its strengths well enough to remain consistently entertaining from start to finish. Recommend!

Mixed Feelings

the only bad thing about this is the fact that kitagawa is not a real person, so minus 3 points


no jokes aside this anime is fine, its filled with fan service and it's honestly overwhelming most of the time. if you're able to look past that you'll find a unique plot (that unfortunately is explored too little) and tons of addictive chemistry between the two high school students. kitagawa's bubbly and energetic nature is what clearly carries this show even though a lot of the time she's over the top and completely unrealistic. It somehow still works.

it's most certainly not for everyone though

“Romcom MC Starter Pack: The Socially Inept Potato”

At this point, I’m convinced there’s a secret anime industry rulebook that says:

> “Thou shalt not create a romcom protagonist with basic human communication skills.”

Because seriously, how many times do I have to watch another so-called “male lead” who looks like he just got hit by Windows XP’s Blue Screen of Death the moment a girl makes eye contact?

Every season, without fail, we get another clone:

... Girl says “hi” → MC.exe has stopped working.

Girl shows some skin → error 404: dignity not found.

Girl breathes in his direction → instant blushing nuclear meltdown.

Like bro… you’re not encountering an eldritch horror from another dimension, it’s just a high school girl talking to you. Calm down. I’m introverted too, but I don’t act like I just got hit with a critical hit from Cupid’s Arrow every time someone with long hair asks me what time it is.

And the industry really expects us to “relate” to this? Nah man, if anything it makes me want to file a lawsuit against every writer who thinks social awkwardness = complete brain shutdown. If this is supposed to be “wish fulfillment,” then somewhere out there is a committee of lonely potatoes funding these scripts.

The worst part? The heroines are always top-tier goddesses who, for some inexplicable reason, decide.

“You know what? This stuttering, blushing mess of a human being is exactly the kind of man I want in my life.”

In reality? She’d block him faster than you can say LINE notification.

And what makes it even more painful is that we know better male leads exist. Cid struts around with his delusional confidence like he owns three different realities. Adonis broods like a tragic Byronic hero but still has more backbone than 20 potatoes combined. And Rintaro? My guy looks like a gangster, acts rough around the edges, but at least feels like an actual human being who can have a conversation without spontaneously combusting.

So here’s my humble request to anime writers:

👉 Stop giving us socially inept potatoes.

👉 Stop pretending stuttering = character depth.

👉 Stop selling awkwardness as a personality trait.

Give me a protagonist who at least remembers how to use basic language functions in the presence of a woman. Until then, the only romance I’m committing to is the one between me and the skip button.
