Silent Witch: Chinmoku no Majo no Kakushigoto

In the Kingdom of Ridill lives a genius magician known to be the first person to ever use chantless magic. With this amazing skill, Monica Everett joins the Seven Sages as a hero who can defeat powerful dragons, such as the legendary black dragon, all on her own. However, the truth is that the Silent Witch developed chantless magic due to being too shy—preferring to live on a mountain top, far from society.

Her secluded lifestyle changes, though, when a fellow sage tasks her to covertly defend the second prince, Felix Arc Ridill, from attempts on his life. Unfortunately, that means she will have to go undercover as a student at Serendia Academy. Between guard duty and her social anxiety, Monica is facing her most difficult mission to date.

I went in completely blind, and this show absolutely floored me. It strikes a rare and delicate balance between childlike wonder and genuinely darker themes. Strange as it may sound, it kept drawing my mind back to Hunter x Hunter and its ability to balance different themes.

The cast is great. Every character feels alive, purposeful, and deeply compelling in their own right. Now, I'll confess— I have little patience for overly emotional characters. Crybabies in anime tend to grate on me almost instantly (I'm looking at you, Chopper). And yet, every single time the Silent Witch cried, I found myself on the verge of ... tears as well. That, frankly, is nothing short of a miracle. If you knew me, you'd understand just how extraordinary that statement is.

Lastly, there's a quiet romance running in the background that is so understated and genuinely sweet, it alone has me reaching for the light novel.

I rarely feel moved to write reviews. But this series stirred something in me that demanded to be put into words. It deserves far more recognition than it has received, and if this reaches even one person who decides to give it a chance, then it was absolutely worth writing.

Mixed Feelings

This one’s a bit of a mixed bag for me.

On the good side, the animation is clean, especially the magic scenes — they really did their thing there. Character designs stay consistent, voice acting is solid, and the soundtrack does its job. Nothing crazy memorable, but it fits.

And honestly… even though Monika can be frustrating as hell — like borderline cliché, even giving those rage-bait moments that remind me of Shield Hero-type writing — I still got attached to her. I wanted to see her win, to grow, to actually overcome her issues.

But that’s where the anime kinda fumbles.

She doesn’t really evolve.

Like, yeah, she interacts ... with people, opens up a bit, learns she’s not always gonna get treated like trash… but deep down? She stays the same. No real growth, no real payoff. And that’s frustrating, especially when we clearly see she’s capable of being insanely competent when it comes to magic.

So you end up with this weird contrast:
a super capable character… who just doesn’t grow as a person.

Add to that the slow pacing and the “a bit of everything, a bit of nothing” storytelling, and yeah — it can get tedious. There were definitely moments where I just wanted to skip ahead to something more impactful… and sometimes, there wasn’t even a payoff waiting.

That said… I didn’t hate it.

I still had a good time watching it. It’s not bad — just not memorable. One of those “it was alright” shows.

From what I've heard from some people and the high score on MAL, I was expecting a really good anime, but eeeh... the characters have zero development and aren't engaging at all: none of them grew on me. The beginning could have been interesting since it was supposed to be about a strong yet shy witch protecting a prince, but the story went off in all directions without any real progress. We could have stopped halfway through and we wouldn't have missed anything. Monica could have been an interesting character for me, but I don't feel like she had that much of an impactful development ... throughout the anime. I expected her to be more assertive, but aside from being shy and cute sometimes, there is nothing special about her who make her an attaching character. It's a shame we didn't see her assert herself more often. The supposed antagonists—or at least the characters with dubious motives—are all pathetic and irrelevant to the story, which reinforces my initial opinion that the characters are all uninteresting to each other. The OSTs iis good, but aside from that, it's really not an anime that made a lasting impression on me. I enjoyed the beginning, but from episode 7 onward, it started to irritate me, and I feel like I've been watching a lot of empty content.
