Serial Experiments Lain

Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology; yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings.

Written by Chiaki J. Konaka, whose other works include Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological avant-garde mystery series that follows Lain as she makes crucial choices that will affect both the real world and the Wired. In closing one world and opening another, only Lain will realize the significance of their presence.

Serial Experiments Lain is a surreal, psychological sci-fi anime that explores identity, reality, and the early internet through an abstract and deeply atmospheric narrative that often feels more like a philosophical experience than a traditional story.

What makes Serial Experiments Lain stand out is its unique focus on technology and consciousness. The series follows Lain Iwakura, a quiet and socially withdrawn girl who becomes increasingly connected to “The Wired,” a digital network that begins to blur the boundaries between the physical and virtual world.

Lain herself is the emotional and conceptual center of the series. Her transformation from an ordinary, introverted girl into a fragmented identity spread ... across different layers of reality is both unsettling and thought-provoking. As she explores The Wired, she begins to question what is real, what is memory, and what it means to exist.

One of the strongest aspects of the anime is its atmosphere. The tone is deliberately slow, eerie, and disorienting. Scenes often feel detached from traditional narrative flow, reinforcing the idea that reality itself is unstable and subjective.

The series heavily explores themes of identity fragmentation. As Lain’s presence expands across digital and physical spaces, the concept of a single, stable self begins to break down. Different versions of Lain appear, each representing different aspects of her personality and perception.

Another major theme is the relationship between humanity and technology. Even though the anime was released in the late 1990s, it eerily predicts modern concerns about internet identity, social isolation, and digital consciousness.

The storytelling is intentionally abstract and non-linear. Rather than providing clear explanations, the series encourages interpretation. Many events are symbolic or metaphorical, leaving viewers to piece together meaning from fragmented clues.

Overall, I gave Serial Experiments Lain an 8/10 because it is a highly atmospheric, philosophical, and experimental anime that challenges traditional storytelling. It stands out for its exploration of identity, reality, and technology, even if its abstract nature makes it difficult to fully grasp.

Mixed Feelings

This is the story of a girl who got super into PC building after connecting to the internet. Atleast, I wish it were that simple to explain. Listen, not many people will understand this anime, and that's perfectly fine. In fact, I don't think anyone should be expected to understand this anime; simply because it's way too ambiguous for any normal person to enjoy. For the pretentious diehards who keep throwing out 10/10s, y'all need to CHILL TF out because this show is far from it. This cult-classic mostly caters niche groups of people who (1) either grew up with it, or (2) who enjoy ... analyzing these types of obscure content. The show doesn't spoonfeed you context. It requires you to analyze scenes beyond what isn't explicitly shown. In a nutshell, Serial Experiments Lain is an anime that forces the audience to interpret the story for them. Many people will be turned off by the reused frames, non-moving stills, and ambiguous scenes. Character dialogue is minimal, and scenes often meander between quiet humming noises and philosophical monologuing. The show relies more on narration than actual storytelling. It info dumps concepts in one scene, and then it leaves you to "think" about it in the next.

After one of her classmates committed suicide, technophobe Lain is pressured by her friends to go online and check her email. So Lain gets introduced to the internet, and her father buys her a brand new PC. As Lain slowly becomes absorbed by the fascinations of the web, the border between the internet and the real world start to collide. Soonafter, supernatural occurences begin happening around her. First three episodes was pretty straightforward, but then it gets extremely ambiguous. This show deals with a lot of philosophy regarding metaphysics and how it applies to the digital age. It info dumps random shit in between scenes that you have no choice but to sit there and wonder, "wtf does that even mean?" If you ask me, I think the story itself is good. The anime just showcases it very poorly. Reusing frames, minimizing dialogue, minimizing animation, and leaving everything to audience interpretation is such a horrible way to tell a story. I understand not everything has to be explicit, but ATLEAST give the audience a little bit more context besides "Knights," and "Psi," and "KIDS," and then cutting to the next scene without explaining anything. I had to look up online threads just to fill in the ungodly amount of plot questions in my brain. Because honestly, the story could have easier to consume if they just had more dialogue and exposition. They could have had characters act out, or explain, the ambiguous info dumps they had. But instead, they just insert them as off-camera narrations in-between scenes. If you enjoyed Neon Genesis Evangelion, then you might enjoy this one as well.

Review in English – Serial Experiments Lain

Honestly, I didn’t really enjoy this anime. It made me sleepy at times, and it’s extremely confusing. Watching 10 out of 13 episodes without truly understanding what’s going on feels very strange.

That said, the concept and the overall vibe of the anime are a solid 10/10. Especially considering the time it was made — before the 2000s — it was definitely ahead of its time.

However, that doesn’t change the fact that I personally didn’t enjoy it that much and found it way too confusing. Unlike Neon Genesis Evangelion, where you can get into the characters’ mindset and slowly understand ... what’s happening, Lain doesn’t really give you that same connection or clarity. For me, it was hard to fully understand or immerse myself in the story.

Sinceramente, eu não gostei muito do anime. Ele me deu sono em vários momentos e é extremamente confuso. Assistir cerca de 10 dos 13 episódios sem entender quase nada do que está acontecendo é uma sensação bem estranha.

Por outro lado, a proposta e a “brisa” do anime são nota 10, principalmente se levar em conta a época em que foi feito, antes dos anos 2000. Sem dúvida, foi algo muito à frente do seu tempo.

Mesmo assim, isso não muda o fato de que eu, pessoalmente, não gostei tanto e achei a experiência muito confusa. Diferente de Evangelion, onde dá para entrar na pira dos personagens e, aos poucos, entender o que está acontecendo, Lain não proporciona esse mesmo nível de conexão ou compreensão. Para mim, foi difícil realmente entender e me envolver com a história.
