It feels like the true last episode of Season 8. We got the "happily...". part of the ending in that season, but this episode here is the "...ever after."
It is truly terrific to see the kids of Class 1A grown and successful, and seeing how their interactions have matured or haven't. This episode focuses mostly on the main characters of the class, the ones we really followed from start to finish. We get to see their expanded ending, the epilogue that I didn't really think the story needed until I saw it.
The closest thing I can compare this to is the finale OVA of
...
Steins;Gate. The similarity is that while the ending of the final episodes was good and felt like closure, the OVA finale feels like it truly completes that.
That said, this does just feel like another extra episode of the anime. It doesnt contain anything truly new or offer any kind of expanded context about the world or the story. It just feels like an epilogue to the series. One that I'm happy that I saw but one that you might not necessarily feel like the series needed. If you already weren't satisfied with how My Hero Academia ended, well I dont think OVA will change how you see it.

I think I finally want to write a review for this series and explain why this ranks so high up there as one of my favorite anime of all time. Black Lagoon is an unapologetic 80's action flick dialed up to 11 with all of the anime absurdity we've come to expect from the medium. Gun fights, alcohol, fist fights, cussing, and fast car (and boat) chases. This is a high adrenaline ride and it will not slow down for you if you are not ready for that.
Yet it's not ALL adrenaline and action, there is a lot of character development and slower moments
...
of build up as the cruel world of Roanapur is viewed from the outside looking in perspective of our main character: Rokuro Okajima aka "Rock." Rock is a typical Japanese businessman just trying to do a respectable job when he is thrust into the world of crime, drugs and violence that is the wild west of the South China sea. We as audience members get to see his perspective of the absolutely crazy world that he's been dropped into and watch as he struggles to either adapt or die to it.
The conflicts in this series feel refreshingly grown up. Unapologetic people commiting unapologetic deeds in the name of a few bucks and another night in the living where they can enjoy getting wasted. Who is genuinely evil, who is just trying survive? You'll have to make that judgement for yourself.
This has one of the top English dubs of all time and that's not just my opinion that's basically a consensus from everyone who's seen this show in English. While the main character is Japanese it is very clear that a majority of the characters in this series are not, English simply feels appropriate considering the cosmopolitan nature of the many gangs and organizations in Roanapur. In this dub Marÿke Hendrikse stands out as an all time voice performance not just in this show but in English voice acting in general. She is absolutely hilarious as Revy with her constant foul mouthed complaining and constant aggressiveness willing to pick a fight with anyone. It is a voice performance you absolutely must hear if you've never experienced it and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
This is a very fun, series with plenty to dwell on and think about after the gunshots stop. The characters are deep and layered, the action is relentless and the world is unforgettable once you've seen it the first time. This is an all time favorite of mine, about time you made it one of yours.

The flaws from the previous season carry over into this one, but the finale still manages to remain heartfelt and emotional. The final battle with All For One and Shigaraki have some moments, but also have a lot of moments of "wait, oh come on!" and not in a good way. I can't spoil details in this review, but I really didn't like much about how the final confrontation with Shigaraki ended. However, with all of the characters and I mean ALL of the characters showing up to give their feel good speech you can't help but feel a little emotionally invested anyway.
The epilogue
...
is where this season really shines. As comprehensive and satisfying for any group of shonen heroes that I've ever seen. Everyone gets their individual ending that makes sense for them. The one issue I have with all of it though is that it feels like it came at us way too early. The fact that the entire story is finishing after only their first year continues to be what I think is the fundamental flaw in how this story has played out from seasons 5 on. I said more about this in my review for season 7 so I won't continue harping on about it too much here.
If I have so many problems with how this anime ended why am I giving it a 7 and a recommended then? Because despite all of my acknowledgements about the flaws of this series, the ending does leave you with a lot of good feelings and a strong sense of closure. That's better than a lot of stories can do.

A cool premise with a fair few good ideas and a lot of very sloppy execution. Clevatess is a mixed bag, that could be a lot better and ends up feeling disappointing because of that unrealized potential.
My main problem with this series is that the action feels so low stakes and predictable because the titular character is so overpowered that any type of danger only happens because of his apathetic attitude. A group of thugs is endangering our little group, Clevatess could easily kill them all if he wanted to but decides he doesnt want to because he doesnt want to reveal himself. But
...
he ends up getting directly involved later anyway when he discovers that there was more to this plot than he first realized and now he's actually motivated to get involved.
The main character Alicia is literally unkillable because of the dark blessing she's received from Clevatess so at no point in any of the fighting is she actually in danger of dying, she's just in danger of suffering a lot of pain because while she can't die she can experience pain. So we get scene after scene of her being completely brutalized by the opposing forces, but after the second time you see it, it stops mattering because you're reminded that no matter what happens to this woman she can't actually die. So the action stops being exciting, and starts feeling like a drawn out bit of filler while we wait for Clevatess to eventually get involved because at some point you know he's going to.
No the ACTUAL danger is that we must at all costs protect this little baby. Yes that's the REAL danger of this series, we must at all times go out of our way to throw ourselves in danger in order to protect the screaming little baby and the nanny character who protects him. This is not a fun bit of plot, this is incredibly annoying that every bit of conflict in this series is centered around this helpless child who serves as nothing more than a plot device, a chosen one character that is the actual key to everything and is the actual driver of the plot because the first half of this season is literally centered around finding a woman who can nurse him.
Don't worry though nothing bad will ever actually happen to the child though because every time it looks like it might, some deus ex machina will happen to protect him, either in the form of Clevatess finally deciding to care, or some other character deciding to switch sides, or some awakening of magical power from the little prince himself. He's never actually in danger but he'll be screaming and crying all the time like he is anyway.
And yet despite all of my very glaring issues with this series, it is still more enjoyable than not. There is an interesting (if pretty generic) world underneath all of this that has the potential to get a lot more interesting later down the line as more is revealed about the Dark Beasts and who among them might actually be a challenge for Clevatess. But this first season has a lot of issues that detract significantly from my enjoyment of it. Here's hoping that it improves in Season 2.
6/10.

I absolutely adored Seasons 1 and 2 of Ascendance, but I feel like we've lost the plot and the charm of the show by the time we finish with Season 3.
I think the reason why that is, is because now that the initial pitch of Myne trying to find her way in society and fulfill her dream of crafting books is more or less completed, now we have to manufacture new conflict to drive the series and it simply does not work nearly as well.
Instead of the story being driven by the clash of modern vs medieval technology, now the conflict is being
...
driven almost entirely by the archaic notion of rigid classism and lack of social mobility. These themes were present in the earlier seasons but they always kind of played in the background but now that they come full front and center in Season 3 I find myself just not being nearly as interested anymore.
Gone is the charming grounded story of a girl trying to build a library and find a cure for her disease and find her own path of self actualization in a different world where her knowledge and creativity make up for her physical shortcomings.
Instead now we have a story where the outsider chosen by magic has to save the kingdom with her boundless magic power that jealous villains want to steal for themselves. It's no longer the fresh breath of air in the fantasy and isekai genre that it once was. The show doesn't do the generic fantasy action bit anywhere near as well as many other shows that are dedicated to that path and the result is that the big climax action scenes that I think are supposed to be the highlight of this season just end up being some of the weakest parts of it. Instead of magic being this scary, abstract force that just kind of lingers in the background of the plot it's come full front and center and we discover that this series really doesn't have a good magic system that's fun to follow along with.
That's not to say that the show has lost ALL of its charm and appeal, but it certainly seems to have lost a lot of it. Here's hoping that Season 4 rediscovers what made this show so different and so enjoyable in the first 2 seasons and returns to it, because if the story continues to follow the path its on at the end of Season 3 then I think it'll lose its magic.

It's almost everything I wanted from the match up between Karasano and Nekoma.
But it's a movie instead of a season of anime, and you can FEEL the squish of the pacing in it and I just don't see a lot of elevated production to compensate for it.
This is as good as Haikyuu "To the Top" in terms of animation and sound design. If it's better in any of those regards it's so minor that it's not worth giving additional praise for.
However the fact that this movie's runtime would barely cover 4 episodes of the anime if it were still in seasonal anime
...
form, means that it just feels like a slightly underwhelming conclusion for all of the build up we've had between these schools and these characters over the course of the series. The match vs Shiratorizawa felt more intense and emotional than this one did, and maybe it felt that way in the manga also (I'm anime only) but something tells me that this has to do with the fact that the match was so much shorter.
This is definitely a mixed bag of emotions for me. On the one hand I absolutely loved the movie, it lived up to the now very high standards I have for this series. It got me feeling all kinds of feels for these characters, and this match in particular felt different emotionally due to the close bond these two rival schools have developed with one another.
It just feels like it's over too soon and that it's missing some things. I don't want to feel like that at the end of the day, because up till now absolutely nothing in this series has left me feeling any kind of disappointment like this.

The pacing of this show has gone completely haywire.
This entire season feels like it should have been spread out over multiple arcs rather than crammed together in this one chaotic battle where so much is happening at once with so many different characters and so many different plot points that are all attempting to be resolved simultaneously that it ends up feeling like a chaotic mess of a series that barely resembles the My Hero Academia that was so exemplary in its storytelling in the early seasons.
It's as though the author simply got tired of writing it, and so he decided to just rush to
...
the finish line skipping across entire books straight to the final battle.
The result is that none of the personal struggles that each character is coming to grips with gets the space to adequately breathe and tell its story. When everyone is having their personal epiphany all at the same time, it ruins the impact of each individual one.
To add on to that, the power scaling in this series has gone completely crazy to the point where none of the fights feel like genuine battles. Rather they all feel like scripted events of deus ex machina after deus ex machina. Villain Plot A is countered by arrival of Hero B from 2 seasons ago, and Villain plot C is interrupted by the sudden awakening of power from Class member D but wait, the villain accounted for that with plot twist E. If you thought the first half of Season 6 was bad in this regard (and I did) then Season 7 is just a LOT more of that.
All of that said. The series is still very enjoyable to watch from an animation and music perspective. Despite how choppy the story has become, the art and music of My Hero Academia still manages to convey a lot of heart and emotion even despite the plot's best efforts to ruin all of it. This season is watchable and even somewhat enjoyable in spite of how much it seems to be trying to get itself over with as fast as it possibly can.

Outstanding visually and musically, as you'd expect from a SAO movie. However the story feels very lacking. Where Aria of a Starless Night felt like an amazing retelling of the first two episodes of SAO, only greatly expanded and from Asuna's point of view that leaves you anticipating more, this story feels like a letdown of filler that doesn't seem to have any real attachment to the main series. The stakes don't feel dangerous at all in the primary plot, and the much more interesting secondary plot of the movie feels like just a little teaser to keep you interested for what MIGHT come
...
in the next movie.
The look and feel of Aincrad is definitely there and has never looked better with the boss fights being especially fun to watch, but there isn't much in the way of new world building in this movie compared to the last one, again except in regard to the secondary plot of the movie. We get to know a tiny bit more about the crafting system of the world but that's about all.
All in all, this movie feels like it's setting us up for what could be some fantastic SAO movies later down the line, with bigger conflicts, more characters and higher stakes, but for right now this feels like a tepid purgatory where you get very little of new substance and just 2 hours of gorgeous filler. A nice watch, but not much to write home about.

I'm glad it's over.
I haven't liked Shingeki no Kyojin's story ever since the big reveal at the end of Season 3. I felt that direction was a massive letdown from where the story was taking us at that point; and even though yes all of the hints were there, I felt that taking the show in the direction it went stripped it of a lot of the best things that made it what it was in the early goings of the series. Going in the direction that the show went turned most of the themes it was trying to discuss into repeats of themes
...
I had already explored elsewhere in other mecha anime. The story beats became predictable, and the conclusion of the story became a long, messy, and drawn out slog that kept trying to justify its own length unsuccessfully.
And yet, despite how much I wasn't enjoying the story for the last couple seasons, I cannot help but give the series as a whole a solid grade because of how quality the animation and sound design is. Attack on Titan will set the bar for many years to come. just like Evangelion did before it, for how far you can push this medium in terms of grand and epic stories, and what you can make them look and sound like.
I may not have ended up liking Attack on Titan's story at the end of the journey, but I am thankful for the journey I was able to go on with it anyway. It was a huge part of my getting back into anime back in 2013, and it has my full endorsement as a modern classic that every fan should eventually see. It doesn't mean every fan will enjoy it to the same extent, but every fan should at least be able to appreciate it for what it is.

This season feels like a colossal waste of time. Did we really need to spend an entire 12 episode season on this little detour arc? This feels like something that could have been handled a lot better in a 3-4 episode OVA series.
There are a few good episodes that feel like they are advancing the main story from Season 1 along a little bit, but a vast majority of this season just feels like a massive detour, and it's frustrating because I'd much rather have spent this much time and detail on the adventures that were happening in the Demon Continent from Season 1.
...
But instead, that portion of the story mostly gets skimmed over while we have 12 whole episodes devoted to this arc and it just doesn't feel like a satisfying use of time at all.
There better be some major payoff to all of the minor side stories within this season to make it all feel worth it further down the line, because as of right now it just doesn't seem that way at all.
