Story - [ 7.5/10 ]
‘Carole & Tuesday’, while not incredibly complex, does a good job of accomplishing everything it sets out to do. It’s easy to watch for any type of viewer – whether you’re someone that wants to deeply inspect the story or simply enjoy a coming-of-age story with incredible music. The thing that makes the story of ‘Carole & Tuesday’ easy to access is its range of ideas and its ability to naturally incorporate them, from the unity of music, organic vs artificial and Identity. You’re bound to find an aspect of the show you can enjoy.
Characters - [ 6.5/10 ]
...
‘Carole & Tuesday’ does a solid job of making you care about the main cast and fleshing out their wants and needs. Where I feel it fails is the supporting cast, and there are a lot of them. During the first half of the anime, many characters are introduced who don’t feel important to the story. Many of these characters don’t show up until the very end and even then, don’t play a huge role in the story. Carole, Tuesday and Angela are all incredibly fleshed-out and understandable characters; the show is the best when focusing on them and them alone.
Animation/Art - [5/10]
‘Carole & Tuesday’ doesn’t break new grounds or do anything visually incredible for an anime released in 2018. I’m familiar with Bones, and I’d have to say this is one of their least visually notable productions. The animation doesn’t add or take anything away from the show; it does what it needs to, and nothing more. The animation never had me in awe, nor had a moment where I was complimenting it in my head. The rotoscoping can feel weird, but I had no major issues with it. Again, the visuals are not the reason you’ll enjoy ‘Carole & Tuesday’.
Soundtrack - [10/10]
‘Carole & Tuesday’ has a great soundtrack. Obviously, it has the advantage of being about music and the meaning behind it, but ‘Carole & Tuesday’ does not disappoint for one second with its music and handles the songs incredibly well. I never felt the music was out of place or emotionally bland. The songs practically forced their way onto my Spotify playlists.
Personal enjoyment - [8.5/10]
‘Carole & Tuesday’ was a joy to watch. The start can feel slow from episode 3 – 6, after that, though it picks up and does not lose your attention. The music really is what makes this show stand out. Every single song feels perfect for the story and characters. I also loved the political tension that shows up in the second half of the anime. Although, the ending is where it loses points for me, I think it does well in terms of the story, but I was expecting a little more.
Overall, ‘Carole & Tuesday’ is a lovely show and feels different from anything I’ve seen in a lot of ways. I don’t believe you’ll lose anything by giving it a chance, even if you don't end up loving the show. - End of Review
In terms of score, I really wanted to give ‘Carole and Tuesday’ a score of 8. The show just misses too much in the little ways. If you love music and stories about coming-of-age artists, then this really is the show for you.
7.5 + 6.5 + 5 + 10 + 8.5 = 37.5
38.5 X 2 = 75
75 / 10 = 7.5 (round down) = score of [ 7 ]
