Why are people complaining?!

The animation quality is on the same level as Death Note, which is still considered one of the best manga adaptations ever made.

The story is engaging, the characters are compelling, and the opening perfectly captures that feeling of malice and mystery.

What also makes it refreshing is that, unlike most battle royale anime, the characters are not killing each other. Instead, the series relies purely on psychological games, manipulation, and mind battles.

I honestly believe the anime will get much better as more episodes come out.

Definitely one of the most underrated anime right now and a hidden gem that could stand the test of ... time.

Finally the great Lair game manga show get adptated.

I kind of read the mangá of this anime rencently and It was amazing. The history is worthy.

In relation to the anime, the design and the animation is quite good, since is a psychological anime, although I think same characters may have stayed a slightly umproportional reaction on the anime, but that doesn't hurt the experience that much. I notice they keep same aspects from the manga that give us the sensing of anciant such as mail letter and that building.



Moreover, I Felt that the characters are pretty well adaptated and there is more intresting ... characters waiting to came. I feel like people didint like that much yet but as the history goes we are gonna be suprised like it more.

Overall is a great psychological manga-anime history focused on clever, intelligence and manipulation games.

Just waiting for the peak moment.

The animation has been the most criticized aspect of this adaptation, and it’s not surprising. The drawings—both in the backgrounds and the characters—are quite weak, and the effects feel like something out of an anime from 20 years ago. However, this series isn’t meant for someone looking for a visual spectacle. The charm of the manga lies in its suspense and plot twists, and although it may seem like a simple anime at first, its complexity and depth will grow and eventually exceed the expectations of anyone looking for something similar to manga like Kaiji.

That said, there ... is one aspect where I think the adaptation has clearly fallen short: the character designs. If you look up the cover of the first volume, you’ll see what I mean. Nao and Akiyama originally had a darker look, with harsher facial features. This is undoubtedly the biggest flaw when it comes to capturing the manga’s overall vibe.

Now, moving on to the review for those who have watched the first three episodes (the first game: the Liar Game).

One of the main complaints from non-manga readers has been the protagonist. Manga readers will try to convince you that the real protagonist is Akiyama; however, the brilliance of the story lies in experiencing the Liar Game through Nao Kanzaki. If you didn’t like Nao because she seems too naive, I encourage you to give her a second chance—you’ll see how she might surprise you by the end of the story.

As for the changes made in the anime, there are quite a few that I think were mistakes. Akiyama no longer smokes, 20 years have passed since the manga, and we live in a different world now; for example, smartphones exist now. In fact, Nao now discovers Akiyama online instead of through her “lawyer.” These are minor changes, but the worst one is the content skipped in the first episode. In the manga, when Nao receives the 100,000 yen, we are shown that she has just started university. She doesn’t know anyone and lacks the confidence to talk about the Liar Game with others. She tries to explain it to old friends via chat, but no one believes her, and she eventually realizes she no longer has any friends. This is something that makes it harder for anime-only viewers to empathize with her: in the manga, you can gradually feel her desperation. She can’t share her problem even with her father, and when he eventually dies, she will be completely alone.

Akiyama is in a similar situation. In the anime, they also skipped a panel where the police officer who helps him avoid the reporters says goodbye and tells him he should open up now that he’s free. Lastly, I won’t go into too much detail, but in the manga, the way the teacher deceives Nao lasts longer and is far more coercive and manipulative. Even though it’s clear he’s deceiving her, it feels more believable in the manga.

That said, these aspects don’t significantly affect the overall experience. The first game is possibly the weakest in the manga, and from this point on, the story will stick with you in one way or another. As more games are released in the anime, I’ll update this review.

I'll be completely honest, I feel strongly enough about the wasted potential in this premise to say something about it, but not to articulate in detail why I feel that. This isn't really an adaptation problem, as having read a bit of the manga, I really don't understand why it has an 8.25. I must assume it eventually gets better, but certainly not up to this point.
But I really don't want to make this review completely pointless, so I'll add that I haven't seen in a long while a protagonist this hapless, gullible, and stupid as Nao in a long time. And instead of ... helping, Akiyama just makes things all lopsided, without even the courtesy of making a good dynamic between the two, as they are in effect both rather predictable in their distinct ways.

Instead of this, my recommendation is to watch the Music Video of the song that serves as this anime's opening, that being Yorushika's Bubble (あぶく). I think that rewatching that MV 20 times or so would have been more worth my time personally.

After So Many Years Liar Game Made it's Anime debut, In my opinion this anime is one of the best anime of spring 2026, Unreal fans watched frieren and keep telling us this is MADHOUSE Standard, but for Madhouse old fanbase every director & Tream of madhouse has his/her own standard.

I love this anime, Story is engaging, psychological aspect is well done, animation is minimal and beautiful(we don't need very superior animation for such anime), Yuzu Satou one again nailed Psychological anime,Asami Kawano has also potential to became a great director.

Nao Kanzaki is supposed to be "foolishly honest", but they instead just made her super gullible and trusting of everyone. People CAN be honest without being trusting of everyone around them, but not her apparently. She also doesn't seem to have a single thought on her own somehow. She follows around the other main character of the show Shinichi Akiyama and only serves to be a reaction bot.

"I should just trust Akiyama"
"OOOHHHH NOOO AKIYAMA WHAT WILL WE DO".

No Kanzaki. You did nothing but annoy me and anybody else who expected anything good from this show. Genuinely if ... she wasn't around the show would be considerably better. Unfortunately, that is not the universe we were blessed with. I have other issues with the plot (like the fact that it's very mid), but those aren't as important. The most notable issue is it feels like there will be multiple episodes where nothing happens and then we get to an episode of a "big reveal". They don't really do this reveal well though and the episodes leading up to it are pretty boring.

Just watch Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. It's 10 times better and you won't have to deal with one of the most annoying main characters ever written.

Regarding the animation, we can say it's a big "Okay," in fact, nothing spectacular, with features reminiscent of Death Note.

However, I was bothered by the logical narrative of the events and solutions to the problem, which may seem "correct" or "simple," but in practice, there are numerous variables that would make it completely unfeasible.

This dichotomy between a completely honest person and a swindler is interesting; the way they see the world and treat different people leads us to reflect on our morality in society. In the end, both characters grow together.

However, I expected more from a famous mangá hat promised a good story.

I get the premise of the "she's too honest/ pure" but damn girl get a hint. Every episode (scrap that - multiple times in an episode) she hits us with the "Soo-na" ("That can't be") voiceline or keeps spamming her "Akiyama-san" joker card everytime something doesn't go according to the "plan". Exposes all the "upcoming plans" to anything and anyone, prematurely celebrates until someone hits the uno reverse card like brother it gets to a point.

I like the art direction, i enjoyed the first episode quite a bit but it's a downward spiral so far. Hope it picks up for the remainder of the ... season (I didn't read the manga).

I don't normally leave written reviews, but I feel the need to express my frustration with this one, because Liar Game is just so horribly bad, I think I'm going to drop it!

The story has some potential, as the premise and the theme are kinda interesting, and the title of the show has an alluring ring to it, not gonna lie. But the MC is so damn insufferable, sooo ridiculously dumb and annoying, that it makes the series utterly unwatchable!

She makes me feel like b**ch-slapping my screen each time she does or says anything. There's being naive and innocent and overly trusting, and there's ... being a complete idiot without a single functioning brain cell and without an ounce of self respect! It's super cringe, and the worst if all, she doesn't show any signs of potential character development. If anything, she seems to be getting worse and more stupid each episode.

Other than that, I don't really like the art style either, character faces look off and disproportionate, but that's just me being petty. I'd easily ignore that for well-written compelling characters, which Liar Game unfortunately lacks.

One good thing I can say about this show, though, is that the OP is amazing, but such a good song was wasted on this trash anime.

Tempted to go up to a 6, but it's a 5. Animation and voice acting is fine. The anime clearly hinges on writing so that's my focus. It feel like the story is a squid-game like premise. People in debt get wrapped up in rich people's games to pay off debt. The main character is a completely helpless idiot that relies on the real MC of the show. She literally cannot do anything and is there just to provide dramatic suspense for the emotionless cool guy to figure everything out for her. Very predictable outcomes. At least there aren't any little kids. It's a good ... change of pace from the isekai slop that is common.

I've been watching this anime since it's airing. I didn't know anything about the manga or anime. I just watched it's teaser on youtube and I was really hyped up for it.

I generally like psychological, mind games related anime which includes manipulation stuff. This is one of those anime which doesn't relies on gore for shock value. Liar game uses mathematics for it's every sequence. This is one of those anime which maximize logic to a level so you could use your brain for itself solving puzzle.

Tbh, Everything in this anime makes sense at it's best. However, people are so impatient and they've got rotten ... by overconsuming shonen that they have rated it so poorly. it's likely due to Liar game lack of shock value factor. It had a underrated start. I expect more anime lovers to watch this one, it's going to be better i hope so.


Madhouse is really good at animation; if you'll see they have incredibly improvised their animation per episode, you can actually compare it to episode 1. But generally I don't have any frustrating experience throughout whole anime. So in my case, animation wasn't a problem.

People were calling out Nao character for being a weakling and stupidity honest which is a trait of her character as a excuse to call it boring. Ongg! I can't believe how can you be so stupid. Have you heard of character progression before? Excuse me duh...


Majority of animefans are based on hype. You can call them hypelovers; they won't appreciate a good story if it hasnt any banger episode. i really liked the story of Liar game no matter what will you say.

It has it's own flaws which i won't neglect here as I seem to reviwing it.

This is a simple run-of-mill high stakes psychological game show.
This one has no magic or science fiction or anything unimaginable.
A brain-dead naive person and a genius lead the story.

Sound and Animation - 6/10
Despite being in modern era, the animation is decent at best.

Screenplay - 6/10
Brain dead girl gets stuck in problems while genius guy figures solution.
The puzzles/solutions are what make it decent enough to watch.
... Simple yet not overly complicated.

Characters - 5/10
It is an old script with caricature characteristics in people.
Apart from the male lead, most characters don't seem real.

Direction - 7/10
They maintain a decent pace in the show keeping it enjoyable enough.

There is something socially inept about the MC. it leans into that “try your hardest and still get kicked while you’re down” feeling. It’s very much the kind of story where people who shouldn’t be trusted are constantly being “saved,” even when they helped set things up in the first place.

The story is fairly unique in its setup. The psychological game structure and constant deception keep it interesting, even if some twists become a bit predictable once you get used to the rhythm. Still, if you’re into this genre, it stays engaging because of the tension rather than surprise.

The art style is old-fashioned, almost nostalgic ... . Characters are a mix some clever, some frustratingly naïve or extreme. The MC in particular can be hard to stomach at times, not because she’s unrealistic, but because she often reacts in ways that feel painfully socially off or overly idealistic. Like so many animes before do!

Overall, people who enjoy psychological mind games and betrayal-heavy plots will probably like it a lot. If you need grounded, emotionally consistent characters, though, it might be a rough watch. watch at your own risk

an anime about a 'little charlatan' [of the common people] saving the pure and honest beauty from the 'big charlatan' [of the social elite].

bottomline is that the setting of this world is one in which influential people can hold you to extreme and insane contractual obligations just by sending a package to block your doorstep & having you open it.

in such a twisted and inane world with terribly-poor [equality-before-the-law] reminiscent of the game [manhunt] by Rockstar, your only recourse against the ludicrous and horrifying big charlatans are the cute self-sacrificial and brave [little charlatans] who fight for you.

in conclusion... this anime itself is actually the ... work of a charlatan; naturally, their goal is to scam you badly.

and the primary purpose isn't merely fame, reputation, or money... but rather something very spiritual: THE ACCEPTANCE OF CHARLATANS ([SCAMMERS]) WITHIN THE SCOPE OF YOUR OWN TOLERANCE.

in other words: even if it is just some [little] scammers (charlatans), they hope that you will [let them in].
