While I can't knock it for its anti-imperialist themes, Drama Queen does come off as incredibly racist dog-whistle for contemporary immigration issues in Japan. I'm going to edit this for clarity because some people have not been able to comprehend the obvious. The actions of the protagonists are nothing but glorified; this isn't Death Note, these aren't villain protagonists. The popular notion that the couple will be painted as unsympathetic later on is wishful thinking at its worst.
The setting is in Japan, where aliens live among Japanese people due to the aliens saving the Earth from a "giant meteorite" and introducing humans to fancy new

Drama Queen is EXTREMELY unsettling. I never felt so uncomfortable reading a manga before.
The plot of the manga is that an alien race saved humanity from an asteroid and then started inhabiting the planet among humans. Since they were the ones that apparently saved the planet, all humans treat them super well, like heroes. However, the aliens also started receiving very special treatment in detriment of humans, making some people very uncomfortable with their presence. Our two protagonists have had very bad experiences dealing with aliens in their lives, especially in their recent job, having an abusive alien boss, and they start getting suspicious about how ... I'm sorry but you have to be so dense to not see what's right in front of you. This work is so balantly xenophobe that it screams in your face. You can sugarcoat all you want with "they are aliens" "it's about humanity losing it's dominant position" but the aliens aren't really >alien< they act like humans, they dress as humans, they act as the stereotype some japanese people think of foreigners that visit or go live in Japan.
They are presented as rude, with no spatial awareness, they don't apologize, they talk loud. All those things are the issue, the line between being a ... Dec 4, 2024
First off, this manga is by no means racist. Sure you can fantasize about killing aliens being like killing tourists, but its just inherently different and fictional. Fictional racism doesn't hurt anyone, it's just a storytelling device, and if you take offense from it, you're probably a self-victimizing bum.
The plot of Drama Queen is very reminiscent of something you would find in a Tatsuki Fujimoto one-shot, something so bizarre and insane and just running with it and escaping reality, submersing us in this world where aliens are commonplace, and our 2 MC's aren't happy. The MC of this story is genuinely just a bad ... Dec 2, 2024
The artstyle reminds me of some Tatsuki Fujimoto stuff, I know he had newer assistants last year so this might be one of his former assistants. The premise seems really interesting and having 2 main characters who are terrible people off the bat is a breath of fresh air. Only one chapter is out as of writing, but hopefully, the author can advance this premise and not taper off the concept like other good first-chapter series like Dear Anemone. But the one chapter is pretty decent so I would recommend it for now. I will say though, if you can not handle a POS protag,

It’s too early for a full review, but why should you check out this manga? Because the plot and characters feel original and purposeful. They’re not driven by accidents around them; instead, they actively shape the story. Plus, it exudes a strong Chainsaw Man vibe—crazy, unpredictable, brutal, and funny.
First, the main characters reflect young people aged 15–25 who feel lost and view the world as inherently unfair. The story begins when aliens save the world, but it becomes clear that they start treating some humans unjustly. This introduces a philosophical dilemma: is it better to obey your saviours, or are freedom and honour more important ... Dec 15, 2024
Drama Queen is an adult series with adult themes about a scrappy underdog who's been trampled by an establishment that is run by a species that colonized her entire planet. It's very much NOT about glorifying the killing of minorities like many have claimed. If you think such a thing, I have bad news for you.
You are presented with a world that has essentially been conquered by an advanced foreign civilization. This civilization wormed its way into every facet of power and made efforts to ensure all leadership roles were loyal and biased to them as opposed to the native residents. Said native residents ... too early to give a proper review but looks promising, interesting characters and very appealing art style. Really comes down to what the author decides he wants his message to be. Atleast this has a message, which puts it significantly above most other manga. It doesn't really seem to be "racist" as a lot of people are saying. It's more of an apartheid situation. I hope the author decides to take it into a class war direction and not a racial direction. This is my first written review so i am unsure what else to say
This will likely be a popular manga and will get ... Dec 19, 2024
I'll go over the style of the manga first and then I'll say something about the story of this so called "racist" manga.
The style is unique in its own way, it does remind me of CSM in some scenes but with its on quirks and silliness. The art style is very fitting for this manga and I'm sucker of it. The manga means no racism and there are a lot of points in the background or in what the characters say where it's clear, that the aliens do have more rights. From the first chapters (don't remember exact page) on the background there's a buildboard saying: ... Feb 3, 2025
Drama Queen I think is going to be a work that will be quite recognized within several months (I suppose when they can serialize it more formally) despite the rough beginnings it had and the harsh criticism.
The characters are crazy, the stories are bizarre, I suppose for a more adolescent-adult audience but with their sense of humor. OBVIOUSLY, there are scenes that are unreal but you know...that is the magic of a science fiction and alien story. It has only a few chapters, but it is still a fresh and original story (within its limits, obviously). The drawing is simple, but good and understandable, the story has ... Apr 27, 2025
It's sure taking its sweet time to say anything about anything...
Drama Queen is a perfect example of a piece of art that uses something as a topic but isn't really about it. I feel it's almost misleading calling its obvious (and it is obvious) immigration subtext "themes" because they're more props. They're unmissable, sure, but they're not what is being written about; they're being written around. Drama Queen is far more engaged with the tired romantic tension of its two obnoxious leads and the shallow psychosexual shock of cannibalism. I admit, I like a good cannibalism story. It's a powerful image to craft symbolism around. ... Apr 20, 2025
I guess it's about time we started getting more Fujimoto influence in contemporary manga. Drama Queen is a Shounen manga set on an Earth invaded by aliens, following two people who hate these aliens' guts so much that they'll do anything to get rid of them. Of course, with this premise you'll expect them to find a resistance of sorts to retaliate and then undergo training to start fighting them. But nope! Drama Queen isn't really a Shounen, Shounen manga. It's a subversive, absurdist dark comedy manga that has more in common with the freewheeling, dark, nihilistic and subversive Chainsaw Man than anything else in

There are now 15+ chapters of this manga that for some reason I still see people rage about on anime themed social media circles. On one hand I sorta get it, but at the same time, I see people get upset about more so the surface level stuff, such as the (alleged) racism metaphor./ the (alleged) colonization metaphor.
Yes I have to write alleged because the manga has gone on for this long and I still do not understand what the story is trying to tell, if it's trying to tell anything at all or it's literally just humans vs aliens and everyone just got the ... May 10, 2026
Drama Queen is.. a ride? I liked it. From the start, I read things as they are, i don't go into too much depth, which is the problem with half of the people reading this. I've been reading this since the second chapter dropped, and honestly, i didn't get this "racism" until, a few chapters later, i scrolled through the comments, and had to figure that out. Some people need to take things at surface level, genuinely.
I love it, the emotional tresses of Seiran are a journey I've accompanied with him, in all ways. I don't know what the hell could happen, and am just ... Mar 7, 2026
I've followed every release. I feel that the shifting release schedule, combined with the widening release gap between chapters sometimes, and said chapters following the "shock" period not seeming promising, may have made readers drop it and move on. I remember seeing comments that it was going to be a chainsaw man clone, but that sentiment doesn't seem far too close, although they do share simularities. The story did, infact, turn out to be pretty promising, and I share sentiments with other reviews that I won't repeat. All I will say is that if you are here suddenly remembering Drama Queen, I recommend catching up

Honestly, Drama Queen surprised me in the best way possible. I started it expecting something cliché, but the story turned out to have real emotional depth and amazing character growth. The art is beautiful, expressive, and fits the tone perfectly.
What I loved most is how the relationships feel real — messy, emotional, and full of little moments that stick with you. It balances humor and drama so well that I couldn’t stop reading. Definitely recommended if you like stories that make you both laugh and feel a bit of heartbreak. Drama Queen is a surprisingly layered manga that goes beyond its initial premise. The storytelling feels authentic, ... Mar 16, 2025
It's really a bit too early to call this one, but it seems interesting enough. Given how it's progressed so far, I have to wonder how long it will carry on for. It definitely doesn't seem like the type to carry on for 200 chapters. Maybe over a hundred depending on how much they want to flesh things out. But it's pretty good so far. I had my doubts about it going anywhere interesting but it's done well enough. It's not amazing or anything but it's different, quirky and entertaining enough. I'm very fond of the art style. It's very line hatch heavy with thick

It's a masterpiece, it follows four isolated characters from different social classes who unite in their speciesist murders because they have become monsters after the horrors they have endured. We see them justify their actions in simple and absurd ways; the characters are both deeply human and monstrous, which is what makes it so complex. The dark humor and violence are skillfully handled. It's not for everyone; those who accuse the work of racism are the first to fail to understand it because they prefer to whine rather than reflect on what they read. It's hard and real that's why it's good
The manga also deals ... Mar 26, 2025
My own quick opinion real quick... I don't care about the actual drama surrounding the manga, I'll read the substance whether it's left-ring wing as long as it tells a compelling story.... and this story is all over the place.
That first chapter was amazing and honestly if you ever where to give the manga a try, just read the first chapter and stop there (Atleast for the moment) because the next few chapters that came out.... How should I explain it... it's like if a fast paced Overthinker has made their own manga, like what do I mean by that? Think of it ... Dec 25, 2024
Drama Queen has an intriguing premise, but it is still too early to confidently recommend, especially if a reader has experience with series such as Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, Code Geass, or Overlord. Even a Fire Emblem game has this similar premise. Other reviewers may use buzzwords like "anti-imperialism" or "racist dog whistle"; however, that is not really the issue here. Instead, it could be argued that those specifically are what makes this story interesting.
The worry for Drama Queen is the potential direction that it will take as it develops since if it strays into the path of the aforementioned series (and arguably, it ... |
