Synopsis

Elle Nagahara is a first year in high school. Her grandfather and his rival, later friend made a promise, that their kids would get married. But they both had sons, so now the promise falls for the grandkids, Elle and Ruo. Ruo wants to marry Elle, but Elle want's a normal life. Everytime she falls for a guy, her grandfather sends few students from his gym to scare the guy off. It worked on every guy, untill Kazuki Shindo.

It's a cute story, really. You totally fall in love with Elle right away.

Granted, this manga is only three volumes, so the next bit shouldn't be surprising buuuuuut. . .

It definitely ended too quickly. It feels extremely rushed. I mean. . . the ending itself is befitting and I don't feel overtly disappointed at how it is. . . it was just too fast. I think there coulda been a bit more. . . five volumes would have been totally appropriate with the right amount of filler and not much more drama. . .

Anyways, it's a good dichotomy presented through the whole thing, and ...

The story has a lot of inconsistencies. If Elle really dislikes martial arts, she would have some deep reasons, not just because she has to clean the gym. Cleaning the gym is not a valid reason to hate martial arts; that would only make someone dislike cleaning, not combat sports. And the characters don't have enough personality. Elle, Kazuki, Ruo, and the other characters are all Mary Sues and Gary Stus since I can't even name 3 traits about them if I don't include appearances, relation to other characters, and stuff like that. It's a bad character when Elle's only goal is to get a ... boyfriend. It seems like wanting to date someone totally sidelines the plot about martial arts in Punch, like how the plot of love sidelines the plot of basketball in Girl Got Game. It's insulting that Kazuki's dog (Choppy) looks really like Elle. First, it's unrealistic, even for a Pekingese, to have a face shape that looks like a human's. The author tried to make the dog look like the person so much that there's no fur on the dog's face, the dog doesn't have doggy ears, and there's basically no muzzle. That's ruining the dog's anatomy. And it's also an insult to Chinese dogs. And it's kinda odd that some characters might mistake Elle for a dog, like, are they dumb, or have they never met a dog before? And it's kinda weird that the grandpa (Gigi) looks like a baby or a tiny takoyaki when he's supposed to be an ex-martial arts champion and the current gym coach. He should look more sturdy, fierce, or at least live up to the title, but he looks incompetent. I think the author sacrificed his appearance for the cute factor. And in a few rare scenes, when he's emotional, he turns to the normal, full-sized adult look. And there's one page in volume 2 that he wants Elle to feed him. What kinda grandpa, who is a grown ass man who can clearly do stuff himself, wants the teenage granddaughter to cook and feed him?! And the subplot of Kazuki's younger sister is kinda abrupt since the story never said he has a younger sister in volume one. There's a problem in volume 3, which is that only 1/3 of that volume is Punch. The remaining 2/3 are two one-shot short stories that are totally unrelated to the main story. It kinda feels like filler when the publisher realized that they made two volumes, and there are some extras of the story that don't fit as a proper volume, so they told the author to make filler short stories to make it look like it's a full volume. A waste of money. And the story's art style irritates me since the characters turn to chibis a lot, expecially Elle. Why are they turning into chibis? I don't dislike chibis, I just don't like illogical shapeshifting between full-sized characters and chibis. Pick one type ok? Either full-sized for the whole story or chibi for the whole story. Stop shafeshifting! Bro. And the mouths are mostly blank, without tongues, teeth, uvula, or whatever else in mouths. Why?! Showing stuff inside the mouth can enhance the emotion of the characters, like if someone is talking without much energy, only the bottom row of teeth would be visible, and if someone is screaming, both rows of teeth, the tongue, and the uvula would show. And why is Gigi called that? It doesn't feel like a kickboxing champion. And why does Elle call his grandpa by his first name for no reason? That's rude in Asian culture. I'm not saying you shouldn't read this series, I just didn't like it for myself.

The story contains numerous inconsistencies. If Elle genuinely dislikes martial arts, her reasons should be more profound than simply having to clean the gym. Disliking cleaning doesn't equate to hating combat sports. Additionally, the characters lack depth; Elle, Kazuki, Ruo, and the others come off as one-dimensional, as I struggle to name three distinctive traits about them aside from their appearances and their relationships with others. Elle's sole aim of finding a boyfriend detracts from the martial arts theme in Punch, similar to how the romantic subplot overshadows the basketball narrative in Girl Got Game.

It's also ridiculous that Kazuki's dog, Choppy, resembles Elle so ...
