One Punch Man

The seemingly unimpressive Saitama has a rather unique hobby: being a hero. In order to pursue his childhood dream, Saitama relentlessly trained for three years, losing all of his hair in the process. Now, Saitama is so powerful, he can defeat any enemy with just one punch. However, having no one capable of matching his strength has led Saitama to an unexpected problem—he is no longer able to enjoy the thrill of battling and has become quite bored.

One day, Saitama catches the attention of 19-year-old cyborg Genos, who witnesses his power and wishes to become Saitama's disciple. Genos proposes that the two join the Hero Association in order to become certified heroes that will be recognized for their positive contributions to society. Saitama, who is shocked that no one knows who he is, quickly agrees. Meeting new allies and taking on new foes, Saitama embarks on a new journey as a member of the Hero Association to experience the excitement of battle he once felt.

One Punch Man Season 1 is one of those shows you can put on at any time and just have a good time. The parody formula works beautifully, watching villains get hyped up with elaborate introductions only for Saitama to show up and end it instantly never gets old. The comedy lands consistently and the animation is genuinely some of the most technically impressive in anime, making every punch feel earned even when the joke is that none of it matters. Mumen Rider stands out as the heart of the show, the only hero actually motivated by wanting to save people rather than personal glory, ... which quietly says a lot about the world around him. The first season wraps up satisfyingly on its own terms and you genuinely do not need to go further. Deliberately goofy, endlessly rewatchable and easy to recommend to anyone.

Mixed Feelings

This show is meh.

The main issue for me is that I don't like Japanese comedy that relies on overreactions, nor do I like typical shonen fights that devolve into lengthy monologues, taunt battles, announcing of attacks, etc. These are the foundational layer of this show, and to me they're always boring. On top of that is Saitama, the protagonist whose gimmick is that he destroys all enemies in a single punch. I enjoy his deadpan humor more, though I wouldn't call it consistently funny -- it gave me an occasional chuckle here and there. I also somewhat enjoy the shtick of Saitama not being ... recognized for his power and others always lucking into taking credit for the most part.

Saitama makes or breaks the show for me. When he's on the screen, the show never really reaches "great", but it's at least "good". When he's *not* on the screen, this series reverts back to its foundational layer which I find tedious and boring. The comedy doesn't land and the action scenes are meaningless particle effects broken up by characters blabbing for way too long when they're ostensibly in a fight to the death. The issue, I presume, is that there's just not a lot the story can do with the gimmick if the MC is ending fights in one punch, so Saitama has a habit of showing up only right at the very end for a single punch, doing a few wisecracks, and then he's gone. The rest of the screentime is filled up by side characters that have nowhere near the same level of charisma. This is particularly bad in season 2, and reminds me a lot of Overlord's season 2 stumbles where the MC is only present for like 1/3rd of the show at most.

We're probably looking at one of the most simplistic anime in history. Where to begin? OPM is clearly a one-joke anime that doesn't last more than a single episode; the premise is ridiculous even as a parody. Ironically, it's an anime where the joke is that it's not funny. The problem is that clearly no 12-episode anime can survive on that premise. Saitama is one of the most simplistic, boring, and uncharismatic protagonists I've ever had the misfortune of encountering; he's a character who clearly needs to be removed from the screen, otherwise the series itself falls apart. The secondary characters are the ones who ... clearly stand out the most, and not precisely because they're good, but because simply not being Saitama is enough to make them stand out. This anime would clearly pass without a trace were it not for its excellent art and animation; that said, even that isn't enough to make the fights even remotely entertaining. You can add all the flashy lights and fast-paced action you want, it'll still be boring if you can't at least create some tension, and OPM is incapable of creating any tension at any point. It's incredible that an anime with such great fight animation manages to be so uninspiring to me. Want to switch off your brain for a bit and watch some good fights with great animation? Change the channel and put on Jujutsu Kaisen; don't waste your time with OPM.
