For centuries, the Poison Masters have perfected the art of assassination. Among them, the Gero family stands as one of the five most powerful families of Masters, wielding unmatched skill and influence. Hikaru Gero, heir to this infamous bloodline, has lived his life deep in the shadows of the underworld, far removed from love or marriage.

However, to ensure the Poison Master bloodline does not die out, the head of the Gero family declares that Hikaru's sister will be forced to bear an heir. Soon after, Hikaru crosses paths with Mei Kinosaki, a brilliant marriage swindler who also happens to be his current assassination target. Determined to protect his sister and solve the succession problem himself, Hikaru makes an unexpected request on the spot—asking Mei to help him get married.

DISCLAIMER: If you unironically complain about things being “woke” or, for whatever reason, dislike any form of LGBT representation in media, my suggestion is for you to NOT watch this series. Contrary to many comments, this is NOT a, yaoi, yuri, etc. show. It’s a shounen battle series at its core, and the main character is a straight male, but you WILL see queer characters.

To be honest, I had zero interest in this series initially. The cavalcade of spy and assassin/hitman themed series since the rise of Spy X Family has oversaturated the market ... and the synopsis for this series was underwhelming. I figured after a while the marriage swindler, Mei, would fall for our protagonist, Hikaru, and then he in turn would fall for her. Fairly predictable formula. I decided to watch the first episode on a lark because Gigguk recommended it and the trailer showcased some great action scenes thanks to Bones’ production quality, so I figured, why not give it an episode and see what happens.

Boy howdy has that decision lead me down quite a rabbit hole. After the twist was revealed in the first episode, I had to reassess my priors. “Ok”, I thought to myself, “maybe this series is doing something different. The waifu candidates introduced might have a chance. Let’s read some of the manga and see if that holds true or not.” After spending 3 days reading all the way to the latest chapter, I can report back that the waifu candidates introduced DO indeed have a chance and there are some great waifus among them too. Frankly, I reread much of the manga AGAIN just to see many of those interactions between Hikaru and the waifu candidates for a second time. Those scenes were just that enjoyable for me. In fact, this is the ultra-rare series where I HOPE we get some filler episodes mixed in occasionally just to see more dating interactions between Hikaru and the waifu candidates between arcs. I’m that Kylo Ren GIF screaming “MORE” over and over again after each date is done.

All of this is to say that, if you enjoy shounen battle action with a side of romcom shenanigans, you will enjoy this series. The action is excellently animated and directed. The comedy is well executed. The characters are largely endearing and enjoyable. It’s darn near the whole package...

Now, I do want to cover some shortcomings, and possible pitfalls, before wrapping up this review because this is hardly a flawless series either. First off, any time you have multiple viable romance partners, you either create a harem where the MC marries them all, which isn’t remotely realistic for his goal of a “happy marriage”, or you have some hurt feelings when one of them gets picked over the others. That’s just the nature of the game. Additionally, if you create a world with lots of characters with superhuman abilities, you must establish world-building to explain why these people aren’t running everything instead of lurking below in the underworld of society. Finally, while there aren’t as many shounen battle tropes to be found in this series as you would typically expect, there are still a fair number of them present.

The 3-episode rule is a great barometer for whether a viewer will want to continue this series since it establishes the formula going forward. A new waifu candidate will be introduced that Hikaru will have to rescue/protect. He will battle enemies until his mission is complete. Then, with help from Mei’s guidance, he will try to connect with the waifu candidate afterwards to see how compatible they are together. If you enjoyed the formula through the conclusion of episode 3, continue onward for more of the same. If not, you can safely stop there as it will be just more variations of that same formula going forward.

So this is an action anime about the awkward powerful mc with a good heart looking for a bride. Very cute plot, and the action is solid too.

The Mc's main wingman/partner is a femboy who resembles Marin Kitagawa. He serves to find missions, and train the Mc to find a wife. I liked the duo which is pretty unique.

The female characters are pretty well written too so it is treat seeing the Mc interact with them. The dates are another fun aspect of the the series.

If you like battle shounen you are in luck, and the setting ... is more realistic modern one.

If you are intrigued by the concept I highly reccommend this.

This is one of these shows which follows standard action Shounen "turn your brain off" formula.

Surface level writing. It doesn't try to go into the detail why this world functions like it is.
1) Like another reviewer pointed out - why don't these super human rule this world instead of just taking mercenary jobs?
2) So, MC took the job with little to no pay, how will he recoup the cost after extremely expensive battle?
3) MC didn't like his contractors and just eliminated them. Why would anyone else hire him, if this is the risk?

Extremely shy protagonist, who can't talk around women without ... help.
They could have easily do it more like professional deformation, but instead it's just: "I don't know how to start the conversation" route.

Ep3 and Ep4 preview also suggests there will be multiple women, which hints that it will be some sort of harem?
Also not for every watcher out there. Because it will just end up with many getting hurt along the way, because he still has to marry someone.

So here is the deal
If you want some easy to consume anime with cool action - ignore my review. You might have a good time.
If you want something more unique and interesting, with at least some glimpses of world building and interesting characters - I suggest to skip it.
