Kirio Fanclub

Kirio Fanclub is the kind of anime that makes me wish ratings didn't exist. Because most people see a low score and immediately write something off. That’s how shows like this get buried before they even get a chance.

Three episodes in, so there isn’t much to dissect structurally, since this is a comedy show. But what I'm enjoying most about it is how different the humor feels. This isn’t your typical anime comedy built on exaggerated reactions, forced punchlines, or recycled tropes. The humor here comes from something much simpler and much harder to pull off, it feels natural.

At its core, it’s just two ... girls, Nami and Aimi, talking and obsessing over the most NPC looking guy, which is already hilarious. But the way they bounce off each other, the absurdity of their thoughts turn everyday conversation into something genuinely funny. The show understands this and fully commits to it. Instead of building Kirio up, it reduces him to an idea, almost a prop, while the real focus stays on the girls and their dynamic.

But there’s also something interesting underneath all of that. From the outside, Nami and Aimi are just competing over Kirio, but the way they interact suggests there might be more going on. There’s tension there that makes you question whether their feelings are really about him, or if he’s just an excuse for something else. It’s not explicit, but it’s noticeable enough.

If you’re someone who actually values humor that feels real instead of manufactured, this is worth your time. Just don’t let a number decide that for you.

Kirio Fanclub is a funny anime about two silly girls who like the same guy.
Despite the fact that they know there is no way they both can have him (unless they’re into threesomes 😉) they still stay close friends and help each other to get his attention.

They do so many crazy things. Writing a song. Casting spells.
The characters are fun. The dialogue is well written. Alot of funny facial expressions.
But its not just funny but pretty touching too.

Good art style. As much as I like fanservice I do appreciate how tastefully the girls were drawn without exaggerations.

Even though I am probably not the target audience, I am still disappointed.

Two girls sharing the same deep feelings for a classmate is a pretty solid setup for a romcom, isn’t it? It could get very interesting, show amazing interactions and plot twists, build a love triangle, and so on. However, this show does not do all that. What it does instead is portray two individuals united in thirsting over some boy like he is some kind of demigod (a comedy attempt).

Comedy: “I love Kirio-kun so much I am going to eat him whole.” That’s it — peak Kirio Fanclub humor. This show gets its ... comedy points from characters acting weird and crossing the line of sanity when it comes to worshipping a guy. If you are into that — welcome to the world of laughs; if not — get ready to practice your pokerface for 20 minutes every episode.

Animation: It is just there. The big win of this anime is the fact that there is no obnoxious CGI. But there are no action scenes either. It is mostly static, talking scenes. You can think of it as a colored and slightly animated manga. There are a couple of lovely backgrounds here and there. If you have seen a bunch of low-budget anime, you will instantly understand what is going on here. There are no reports of AI being used in production, which is pretty good for the year 2026. That means animators were at least employed in the process and might get a chance to work on something in the future.

Sound and music: Pretty decent. The opening is rather nice, the ending is okay, I guess. The voice actors did their job and were mostly very professional, except for that Kirio-kun guy — but I can’t be sure he wasn’t supposed to sound weird in the first place. Maybe that was intentional. Song they are making in the process ended up pretty cool. Some cheap animees just avoid anything artistic saying: here, we did it behind the scenes and thats it.

Rumors: Some people online say that it is not even about a Kirio fanclub and not really about Kirio at all — that it is secretly yuri (shoujo-ai). Would the show get better if that were the case? Honestly, it would get even worse. That would not only mean misleading synopsis and tagging, disappointing people who are not into that kind of relationship, but also would put the horse on the moon for the inner logic of the story. Why are you on the moon, horse? What are you doing there?

Pacing: It is kind of slow. No, it is really slow. It’s a slow burn. The episode would probaby go through a two major events and nothing really happens. If this is meant to be a series of comedy gags, then they should be delivered at a faster, more entertaining pace. It would feel more energetic instead of the lazy tone it has right now.

Conclusion: I just couldn’t find what this anime is actually good at. They tried to deliver humor, but it is not humorous; they failed to deliver art, an interesting plot, school romance, deep feelings, drama, or interesting characters (Aimi is almost there, but she will not save it). I have to apologize to the beautiful ones who fancy this show, it is a 4 out of 10. Bad.
