Kimi no Na wa.

Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl, yearns to live the life of a boy in the bustling city of Tokyo—a dream that stands in stark contrast to her present life in the countryside. Meanwhile in the city, Taki Tachibana lives a busy life as a high school student while juggling his part-time job and hopes for a future in architecture.

One day, Mitsuha awakens in a room that is not her own and suddenly finds herself living the dream life in Tokyo—but in Taki's body! Elsewhere, Taki finds himself living Mitsuha's life in the humble countryside. In pursuit of an answer to this strange phenomenon, they begin to search for one another.

Kimi no Na wa. revolves around Mitsuha and Taki's actions, which begin to have a dramatic impact on each other's lives, weaving them into a fabric held together by fate and circumstance.

Your Name is one of the most beautiful and emotionally resonant anime films ever created. It blends romance, mystery, and supernatural elements into a story that feels both intimate and grand at the same time, leaving a lasting emotional impact long after it ends.
What makes Your Name so special is its central concept of body swapping between Mitsuha and Taki. At first, it plays out in a comedic and lighthearted way, with both characters struggling to adapt to each other’s lives. However, as the story progresses, it slowly reveals a deeper emotional connection that goes far beyond simple coincidence or fantasy.
Mitsuha is a deeply relatable ... character, trapped in a small rural town with a strong desire to escape and experience a different life. Taki, on the other hand, lives in a busy city and is focused on his daily routine and ambitions. Their contrasting lives make their connection through time and space feel even more meaningful.
The emotional core of the film is incredibly powerful. As the story shifts from light comedy to a more serious and emotional tone, the mystery surrounding their connection becomes heartbreaking. The idea of trying to find someone you feel deeply connected to, even when reality itself seems to stand in the way, is handled beautifully.

Mixed Feelings

My score: 6.8/10 Recommend: Yes, but don't set your expectations too high.

I feel like this movie is heavily overrated, I'm writing this review from my memory of how i felt after i watched it a couple a months ago so a lot of what i say will be pretty broad and i wont go much into detail or mention any specific scenes (sorry).

When i watched this film i also watched both 'I want to eat your pancreas' and 'A silent voice' and i enjoyed those two much more and also felt they were both a better story. The movie just felt very rushed and a ... lot of the time i didn't know what was going on, and yes, this may be due to me not paying attention fully but shows shouldn't have to MAKE me pay attention. No matter how complex a show is if its good, i will just pay attention automatically. I felt that a lot of the time random bs was happening and i also just wasn't attached to any of the characters.

I also hear many people online talk about how sad it is, am i missing something? Nothing in this movie really made me feel any emotion apart from slight disappointment and MAYBE a little happy after the ending (or maybe i was just happy it finished).
I cant really give a straightforward list of flaws apart from it being rushed but i just felt this movie was really underwhelming and nothing special.

HOWEVER, this movie is by no means bad, which is why i gave it an okay score. I think it has a decent and pleasing ending and a very unique plot.

Conclusion: This is a wholesome and interesting movie with a very unique plot however it struggles a lot with properly conveying the emotional scenes, as well as pacing and structure.

I'm definitely going to rewatch this in the future and may HOPEFULLY enjoy it more.

The popularity of this truly baffles me. In almost every respect it is so poor - the characters have zero personality and the central relationship is not built up at all, the entire film is ugly and taking constant cost-saving measures, and the plot is thin and drawn out. It is bafflingly lacking in every creative and narrative aspect and then on top of that, it casually has our male protagonist sexually assault our female protagonist every single day.

We even have a scene at the end of the movie where, now reunited, the couple hop cutely from "why are you sexually assualting me?" to "do ... you like my ribbon?" as if her anger and upset (very clearly expressed) about the former literally do not matter at all. Okay. I guess it's unsurprising that the producer of this movie is literally a convicted rapist of young girls.

That would ruin many a good movie for me, but the utter lack of characterisation really makes this an almost The Room tier failure. There is so much awful dialogue. When Taki searches for Mitsuha cross-country they have almost no established relationship. Do we even know anything about who Taki is across the entire movie? No, not really.

The only part of the movie I enjoyed was the midpoint reveal, just because suddenly we had an actually interesting plot vehicle, but aside from that, the entire narrative felt deeply empty. The movie is so bored with itself that it has Taki repeat the same inane questions ("am I trying to remember... someone?") over and over again for an excruciating, drawn out ending desperately trying to use its music cues to juice a single emotion out of me, like getting blood from a stone.

And yes, in some shots the detail in the scene is nice, but the touted prettiness of this movie was massively overshadowed for me by its many implementations of really cheap animation shortcuts and misses, like the over-reliance on CGI, Mitsuha's warped run cycles, and those ugly frame-drop moments.

Awful, awful movie.
