I remember back when MyAnimeList was still pretty small. It was a bit unstable at times after and before it got acquired, but the community felt much closer. You’d actually recognize people - reviewers, recommendation writers, even club owners, it felt more personal. There was some struggle to get a wikipedia site I remember as it got rejected few times.

There were no ads, no modern themes, just that simple layout. People got really creative with their lists too, using CSS, BBCode for the clubs, and custom images to make them feel unique.

I haven’t been that active on MAL lately, so maybe it’s different now. But yeah… it just had a different kind of atmosphere back then. More rough around the edges, but also more memorable.

Many of the feature like the Challenge, Watch, Seasonal, League, and more did not exists.

Yeah the early stage of MAL, a lot have changed since then.

It's been several years since my last anime review, but after all this time it's finally here - my next review!
This review, I would be honest took me over two months of planning taking notes, and when written ended up being one of my most ambitious reviews to date!
the review is for the Pokemon Journeys anime, here's the link:

I will appreciate any reading and helpful feedback to my review, I worked on it a lot! Thank you!

I've not done any reviews yet this year, but I'd definitely like to. I've just been a bit busy with work. I will probably review the new JoJo once I actually watch it.

I plan on eventually re-watching parts 1-3 and watching 4-6. However, since part 7 is self-contained and also quite beloved, I decided to check it out first.

Found you through your review of the Shadows of Spawn manga, which just got a rerelease recently.
Dang. Been reading on and off. Mainly sticking with the classic era thru Armageddon, which is peak Spawn for me. Even read the horrendous (and unfinished) Image United.

Out of curiosity, what was this user's name if I may ask? (Username, not real name lol)

Also like your Rukia pfp.

BTW, due to my current life, replies may take a bit, but I'll get back with you as soon as I can.

Nah I’m just cheating by putting shows I haven’t started yet in watching cause the sight of over 1000 shows in plan to watch messes with my brain ✌️

I got no proper answer for that sry. I get burned out too, & intensely overwhelmed on wut to choose. Sometimes I start a show & don't continue it for a long time. I tend to run through shorter stuff 1st, like films & ovas. Anime is simply the main thing I like to engage which takes up time from other interests. Actually part of y I'm sorta committed rn is cus I want to finish an important part of my list to "free" myself for other things. If it's too much I'll still take a brake on utube or somethin. I also try to finish stuff that I know won't be a huge mental tax for me. I also don't always watch stuff from any current season & stick to backlog stuff. I also have a personal rule to make sure any finished seasons of 2 cours or less I complete on the same day I start. I actually more recently don't go through all finished seasons in a show in a single go but instead alternate to a diff show I haven't started & do that till I have reason to go back to continue later seasons(if a show is only 1 season & no other notable installments that's a great pick for me). Once I simply get myself to start a show I find I simply needed to start it rather than "wait for the right time". That's not always the case but it's the most common result for me. Tbh sometimes it's as simple as "I want to c "completed" number go big on mal & other list numbers go small" lol. Genuinely enough for me especially if I enjoyed the things I watched. I simply want to watch as much as I can. This's all I got, not really much lol. 2020 was also the pandemic so not only did ppl have the time but mentally anime gave ppl exactly wut they needed mentally so it's easier to eat up.

Fata Morgana is LOOONG. I loved that one, but it's one of the only ones I've read so far. Song of Saya is much shorter and is a very popular one.

My fiance and I actually watched the first 3 seasons of ATHF this year since she hadn't seen it! We hope to finish the rest of it next year. I LOVE ATHF! Some of the best absurdist comedy I've seen out of Western animation or anywhere else for that matter.

Books are able to give a lot of details that other media may gloss over. Especially in terms of inner monologue, how a character is feeling at a given moment, etc. I would VNs are the closest relative since it's basically just reading a book with some extra pictures.

Merry belated Christmas! I'm not sure how I answered back then, but I think all of those media forms are capable of producing great works of art. It is a matter of preference, but I would say my favorites would be 1. Literature 2. Movies (live action) 3. Anime 4. Video games/VN 5. TV shows (live action) 6. manga 7. Cartoons/Comics

It's less that I dislike Western animation and comics so much as I'm less familiar with it and don't engage with it as often. I did binge Smiling Friends and Xavier Renegade Angel this year. That was quite fun.

smth like that. until now, I had kept track of all the anime and manga I had watched/read and wanted to watch/read in a note-taking app, but after thinking about it for several years, I finally decided to migrate to MAL, and join this community
spiritdudegamer Nov 23, 2025 8:47 AM
