i might just be an absolute idiot- but i cannot figure out how to change it and im not sure if i just cant change it cus im on mobile or if im just blind- at which case i would be embarrassed to the point of no return and proceed to live out the rest of my days under a rock

Unfortunately, mobile makes using MAL a pain.

It's easy on mobile...

Go to your profile
Press your icon
Then a Upload Picture will pop up.
That's it.
