Which anime has the most realistic/intricate political intrigue?

Political intrigue was mentioned a couple of times in my other thread I thought it worth a new thread. forget the mecha part now. I watched LOGH (which is what I guess most will jump to) and it was a good attempt. It was shaping up to be a masterpiece with all the open threads around 1/2 way through with different factions on different star systems and how they are all plotting against each other and tenuous allies and backstabbing and double crossing and such but totally deflated at the buildup and climax or should I say super anti climax. I have seen 'copers'/apologists say this is intentional as it shows real life which is not always satisfying which is total post hoc BS.

They were just desperate to tie off all threads whether in a meaningful way or not. Felt like a bit of a Game of Thrones type of ending.

So is there any other show like that with the multiple plots which actually pulls it off well to the end?

Well that's one anime that focuses the most in politics. Some of the mecha that were mentioned there seemed to do as well from the descriptions and reviews I've seen. But if LOGH didn't satisfy you in that regard than I don't see how anything else in the medium would.

Maybe try historical mangas or anime or court room palace series? They are usually about that, but I stll don't think you would be pleased in that regard.

hands down OG legend of the galactic heroes and the reboot

but to the point of your question an honorable mention would be the Gundam universal century time-line

@CaptainKenshiro Yes perhaps better to scratch that itch elsewhere than anime then.

@tchitchouan I literally thought of this one when I saw the title of the post. But they say that LOGH is something they watched and it didn't live up to their expectations.

If you don't mind palace intrigue slash mystery without the sweeping scope of a space opera, Yatagarsu is a good watch.

In fantasy ancient Japan, four bridal candidates enter the palace in the hope of marrying the prince, as their respective houses compete against each other for dominance. And there are many in the shadows that just want the prince dead. We follow the prince's new attendant through the story as he tries to make sense of all of this and hopefully not get killed.

Here are some that have political intrigues. Non-mecha, could be mediocre but whatever...

  • Higashi no Eden – pretty far-fetched, but, well, I guess plausible enough for a fantasy...
  • Shuumatsu no Izetta – there are intrigues in this one, but when you hear "turn the tables in WWII using the power of witches", that's probably a sign you shouldn't expect too much out of it;
  • Psycho Pass – a good "Big Brother" kind of intrigue IMO, but I reckon you've already watched it;
  • Owari no Seraph – a "deal cook up" intrigue, pretty weak but still...
  • (a title too long to remember) – it's all about political intrigues, one after another. the downside is that it's in the medieval setting, which is kind of a mauvais ton, right...
  • Shuumatsu no Harem – the "Twitter's radfems' dream has come true" kind of intrigue;

IDK I don't think there is a great series for it. I would say in terms of grounded politics, I actually thought GITS SAC did a pretty good job showing off an immigration crisis (that sub plot is kinda funny now considering who is currently running Japan). That said, there isn't a lot of anime, I would point to that is like IDK realistic. LOTGH is a pretty general take on history/politics. The Empire is a good very general take on say Napoleon's rise to power, and the FPA a good take on the dangers liberal democracies can find themselves in, however, it's not in depth for me to define it as "realistic".

If there is an anime equivalent to West Wing or something, let me know.

I wouldn't go that far. Despite LOTGH being my favorite anime, I actually do agree that after EP 87 it loses it's steam a bit. That said, I actually do like how everything is totally resolved, and it does I think give resolution to both political views, even though Tanaka is still favoring liberal democracy by the end.

I really want to try that one, but the adaptation is incomplete and the source untranslated.

Total Eclipse had very good political plots, a cold-war type of conflict, a government sacrificing its own, and the most convincing terrorist arc I ever saw.

Yes it didn't live up to expectations, but you are omitting that I said it did at first but it was the latter part of the show which I took issue with. It does indeed have the best political plots that I have ever watched but I am so disappointed at how they resolved them, not how they were initially executed.

Just like how Game of Thrones was shaping up to be an all time great for the first 4 seasons and then failed disastrously thereafter.

I even put that in the OP, that I would like LOGH style politics but executed to completion in the same caliber as it began.

So if another show has as good politics as the first part of LOGH but also is able to continue that high quality to the end then it is far superior to LOGH which just dropped the ball when they seemed to just rush all the open threads to finish the show.

It is totally resolved, but only superficially and with no kind of depth that the plot were gradually and thoughfully teased until they became salient plots to begin with.

I'm not sure there are many truly great political thriller anime... I don't think LOGH is really that political of an anime beyond the Clausewitzian sense, the politics is more set dressing than it is really explored (and I love LOGH), it's all the actions of great men for the most part, very little insight to the institutions even though the whole story is meant to be revolutionary...

While I do not think it is a political thriller, https://myanimelist.net/anime/9996/Hyouge_Mono has politics (of the sengoku jidai and carried forward into modern Japan).

Not overly realistic but I’ll throw in The Rose of Versailles.

One Piece is another option, but it's not the main theme, so it takes a lot of episodes to learn about the actual political climate on a global scale.

They're sci-fi settings, but the political worlds of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Oshii's Patlabor films are quite intricate and believable.
