@anime-cereal Same here man. It was one of the best "not so legal" sites ever. I thought the site would last longer since it was only around for a little over a year I think.

I just looked it up cuz I thought the site would come back. I thought the data center being burned was a figure of speech.

I'm sure there are other reasons for the shutdown. What a shame tho cuz it was easy to use.

9anime, Gogoanime, Aniwatch and now Animekai. Only the Pahe remains now...
I also kinda miss Manganato website and their comment section. Mangafire is brilliant but those comments were just different.
There is nothing we can do.
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.

Contrary to popular belief, when piracy increases, so does the crackdown on those websites. The more websites are taken down, the more of an indicator it is that piracy has increased. So kindly shut up.
(Although this website was affected due to some data centre burning in netherlands or somewhere.)

Huge loss ..

Based on user reports, the file-hosting service Megaup.net (or Megaup. nl) is reportedly down due to a fire at a third-party data center hosting their servers.
The outage has impacted many websites relying on Megaup for file storage, such as AnimeKai, Anigo, etc.

@IgorPsc91 This time The pirates weren’t sued, they were smoked..
instead of the usual copyright takedown raids, Megaup collapsed because of something far more primal: fire. The irony is cosmic, pirates weren’t defeated by lawyers or DMCA notices, but by flames in a data center

@Usagi-san-chan, it's not a figure of speech, it's headline news in the Netherlands

@anime-cereal so what do they mean they won't let the community dissappear, when they say they won't continue the site ?
Can't they upload their data on another file hosting server?

@RainyEvenings Could be the comments and whatnot, but more likely they're probably referring to the discord server itself.

@RainyEvenings It has always been weird to me that these piracy sites are hosted in places like the Netherlands instead of Russia, Iran, North Korea etc. where no one cares about western copyright laws. I assume there are a lot of complicated reasons for it but as an outsider reading about these type of news again and again it just seems crazy that so many piracy websites are hosted in the west

So more pirate sites shutting down, means the golden age of piracy?

I thought the golden age of piracy was like 20 years ago...

Well that's annoying, I was using that site to watch Avenger, that anime isn't available on any legit website and hasn't been re-released since it first came out as far as I can tell. Meaning the only options for a second hand DVD are expensive imports.

I haven't been this sad over anime shutting down ever since original kissanime With Ru domain.
These are only 2 sites that had kochikame almost all the episodes, 345/374...
I don't even feel like watching anime anymore.
There are other 80 sites that have all the new seasonal anime very quick to upload new episodes and easy to use..I'm not sad about that..
No matter what I pay nobody has kochikame on their sites. No don't preach about subscription and anti piracy.

@RainyEvenings Dang, that really sucks. This is one of the main reasons I support piracy; it allows access to content that would otherwise be impossible to access through streaming. There's probably so much stuff out there that would basically be lost media without piracy.

LMFAO... I swear @Azulmagia88 you always make me bust out laughing every time I see you make these memes. You could actually compile this shit into a collection and start a fucking awesome blog or something. I remember looking on your profile feed and seeing that one meme you created out of boredom about kimchi (had to share that shit with my wife and she busted out laughing looking at that shit too). lol

@NS2D Netherlands is bit of a center for world internet services. A lot of data passes through there and its easy to provide fast services to very far off places due tot eh quick connections. An Iranian server is not that well connected.

I saw it coming after the site was unusable every two days for almost two weeks. It sucks because some features, like keeping track of the episodes, were perfect if I was leaving an episode in the middle but oh well, there are alternatives, I guess.

That's why I say watch as many anime as you possibly can today cause tomorrow it might not be there ... Same as buy the thing you like instead of adding it to wishlist or shopping cart.. Tomorrow it might be out of stock. Or something unfortunate and unforseen can happen in your life or natural disaster, war etc

There is a rightwing capitalists global efforts to get rid of the open internet, make it accessible only to those who pay, and force censorship or monopolistic control. Worldleaders are working hard on take away digital rights like free speech, privacy, net neutrality, and equal access to online information.

@NS2D because Netherlands and western Europe are still free countries, where true democracy exists, people have rights, people have right to lawyers to defend themselves, lawyers can appeal decisions in court. Unlike other countries where democracy and human rights on exist on paper but system is being run like dictatorship.

Well, that's a new one. Here I thought it was just the weekly thread on yet another anime streaming site being taken down, but its servers actually burned down. I wonder what else got affected, it is likely those servers hosted other things as well.

What have I done?!
It's too late for me now.
I guess I won't be the sane

Yeah, I was pretty confused yesterday too. I visited the site to watch some new anime, but then suddenly it was gone. Animekai was honestly my go to streaming site, so it’s kinda sad seeing such a good site disappear.
I guess it’s time to find another one and move on. Thanks for the 1 year of service RIP

@NS2D In reality, data centers are often built in cool climates like Netherlands, Iceland, Sweden, Finland to reduce cooling costs so iran is not on the list.

At first I had thought that the data center being burned was some form of joke or coded phrasing that went over my head, like a euphemism for something else and they had the copyright secret police squadrons bearing down on them. Then after learning that it was actually real and referred to a true and literal fire fire, and after hearing some passing rumors, I assumed that said data center's damaging or destruction was another knock-on effect and unintended casualty of recent military conflagrations around the globe, like it was based in some near the frontline or otherwise targeted sector in Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Lebanon, Israel, etc.

Turns out that it was in otherwise normally as "safe and secure", stable as they come Western Europe. Just one of those random accidental fires that can happen basically any time anywhere anyhow.

Unless it was actually some covert targeted attack by copyright/IP holder financial bigwigs' hired goons. But that seems less likely when they have an army of lawyers and have shown in recent years to mostly seem to prefer to go the legal route.

It's unfortunate, but as these websites keep playing whack-a-mole with the entertainment companies and switching official names and domain names, shutting down temporarily or permanently, transferring to others' control, having mirrors or clones created of them, etc., I learned to not get overly attached to any specific one in particular and just have a list of them at the ready to alternate and toggle between in my website favorites'/bookmarks menu. The same as YouTube to mp3 and mp4 audio and video conversion sites which are notoriously inconsistent from functional to non-functional or always being taken down and switching about that I have to similarly keep a large enough list and selection to choose from among on hand.

But it also helps, especially as a fallback option if too many sites I'm familiar with go down at once or I want to have a particular episode of a series or film saved for a certain or indefinite period, or don't want it to be at the mercy of streaming loading and buffering annoyances and potential website server or internet connectivity disruptions, or if it's a more obscure series reliant on fansubs otherwise it will be left as only raws or intolerably garbled English MTL - that I finally decided to invest the minimal time and effort back in the spring of 2024 to learn how to start torrenting.
