I'm tired of everybody blaming Liar Game's score on its visuals.
Gundam SEED looks bad. xxxHOLIC looks bad.
That didn't stop viewers from enjoying them.

It has both a hyperrealistic and smooth feel to it that’s just not the norm for “mainstream anime” to bastardize the term. I see no problem with it! It reminds me of the style of Trillion Game’s anime from two seasons ago. Both are seinen so I didn’t even think too much about it.

The standards of anime watchers are different now. Anime is much more accessible today compared to the past, so people tend to prefer fast-paced series. Liar Game is the type of series that should have gotten an adaptation 10–15 years ago then people would have appreciated it more. I already knew the series wasn’t going to become very popular because of Nao and the pacing, especially when they announced it would release in 2026, at least for the first two rounds. Even highly rated series from the same genre, like Kaiji, would probably get the same treatment if they were released today.

this looks really chopped and the direction and compositing of scenes is also not so good but it is still really enjoyable and engaging so you are right
I think music, voice acting and story are great
so it should at least be 7.5(i would rate it 8.5 for now cuz I don't care about how stiff it looks,I am really enjoying it due to the other factors)

6.43 is a bit too harsh even for such animation quality (not the worst thing ever, but definitely far from good), it can't be the only reason it is rated so low.

My guess is that the high stakes game genre is so overdone (it wasn't even a genre 20 years ago) that people are mistaking Liar Game for yet another unoriginal death game slop (good writing sometimes becomes evident only after a while).

Then why do other anime in the genre not have such low scores? The hype for Tomodachi Game was huge (and now nobody talks about it).

Tbf I wouldn’t say it’s entirely on the visuals, many people still find Nao unrootable (myself included) as well as the fact that it’s taken 6 episodes for the strategy to become actually smart. Everything else so far has either been obvious, out of nowhere or not really strategy-based.

yeah you got that right

also liar game don't just show bluffs of characters being smart and manipulative, it clearly gives us real mathematical calculations and psychological manipulation, just other highly regarded shows in the same category.

@Lucifrost Tomodachi Game is slop but it has:

- better animation (definitely not above average, but I'd say at least average quality and not below average like Liar Game)
- higher rated source material (which is beyond me, but I have to accept that the average MAL user disagrees with me)
- higher popularity of the anime, #528 vs #3224 (Liar Game manga is more popular but I wonder if it would still be if we only counted active users)
- more "appeal to emotion"

I think this explanation makes the most sense. A lot of readers who upvoted Liar Game have probably stopped using MAL since the manga ended 11 years ago.

I mean, it's okay so far. There is a lot of explaining of things while, before, and after doing whatever it is going on. Kind of get the ",Explain it to me like I am 5" vibe here and there. But its mid.

I think the main problem is that the character design doesn't really look that good. I can't really put my finger on it, but something about them looks off.

The overall production is fine, I don't think you need super duper production value on a series like this

I mean the adaptation is also at least 11 years too late, so that checks out.

Let's be real here, please. Care to name a death game / gambling non-sports show which had received a good reception from start? Because by the genres trope it's the second part of shows that truly leaves the mark on a viewers.

Kaiji S1/S2, Squid Game S1 (S3 couldve counted as the example I was looking for, but technically its the second part of the second tournamen), Tomodachi Game (I still hype season 2), Danganronpa S1/S3s, Alice in Borderland S1/S2... Yeah, I literally can't think of any. Sure, LG is a slow burn because it needs to teach people games and strats depth, but the point is - no one sane would hail it as high if it wasnt Round 3 coming. So Id say the main reason LG manga is rated so high, it's because the bar Round 3 set you ain't seeing in non-mahjong anywhere else aside from Usogui. The fact why it's rated lower than Tomodachi I'd say 100% on the public appreciation of the each mangas ending.

As a Gundam & CLAMP fan, let me correct your statement.

For Gundam you mistaken Seed with Seed Destiny (which really looked BAD). Xxxholic looked WORSE THAN MANGA, but not necessarily bad by the industry standards, I'd argue. Both are much more popular than the Gambling niche Liar Game. Without Round 3 (and Round 4) no anime only mainstream viewer would recognize LG even if it were drawn by WitStudio. I think you just biased against Round 3 as a reader, but it was UNDENIABLY the real kicker in all previous adaptations as well even when butchered so...

Round 3 is when the real Liar Game starts. Most people just dont rate the show before it happens anyway. People should always compare apples to apples and don't listen to Nao haters for exact same reason. Kaiji is AT LEAST twice more insufferable than Nao in the beginning of each arc, bite me, but he runs away with it.

@EscapismToTheMax all the ones you mentioned (aside from maybe Danganronpa because visual novels rarely get good adaptations) probably had better receptions than Liar Game, which is currently the 47th anime of Spring 2026. For sure I remember that Tomodachi Game was rated 7.1-7.2 while it was airing.

I didn't expect to see the Liar Game anime rated above 8.00 right after the first episode, but 6.43 is lower than I expected (and I still expect that it will get a higher score at the end, even if it will still be much lower than the manga).

@Kaze0927 just because of 1 character and the whole anime is ruined? lol

The main character is the most important character. I wouldn't score it high either if I didn't like her.

When that one character is the main character of a story, then yeah that certainly doesn’t help. If I were to hate Naofumi from shield hero, then I would certainly not like shield hero too much. It’s basic logic my friend.

I also never said what my rating of this anime was. The games are interesting enough, and the main guy is carrying this damn show, so I would give it a 5/10 as of now. But I don’t rate shows until they are finished, so if the games were to get more interesting and the MC develops, then sure I would raise my rating. But this annoying bitch ass MC drops the show 2 points at least. There is a little in terms of redeeming qualities for her 🤷🏻‍♂️

If I were to bring up other shows where one character ruins a show, I would say Kazuya from Rent a Girlfriend, Makoto from School Days, and Inaho from Aldnoah Zero. So yes one character can in fact ruin a show, however Liar Games isn’t completely ruined by her. Ignore her and it’s decent enough I guess.

So how about you take that “lol” and shove it up your ass 👍🏻
