Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu

It has been six months since Yoshiki Tsujinaka's best friend, Hikaru Indou, went missing in the mountains and returned a week later with no recollection of what had transpired. Certain that it is not the Hikaru he knows who came back, Yoshiki finally asks Hikaru about it. Suddenly, "Hikaru" reveals his true monstrous form and begs Yoshiki to keep it a secret, as he does not want to kill him.

Despite his paranormal nature, "Hikaru" seems almost innocent, full of childlike wonder and eager to experience the summer heat, the countryside, and all kinds of other things in a human body for the first time. And for Yoshiki, it matters little if "Hikaru" is a fake relying on stolen memories—as long as he never leaves again. As Yoshiki desperately clings to "Hikaru" in his intense grief, it becomes increasingly clear that something dangerous and supernatural may have descended from the mountains into their village.

This was such a mind bending watch and I am so happy that I was able to watch this when I did. This is such a densely complicated series that there could be so many different interpretations of what this show represents and they would all be correct in their analysis. In my viewing of this series I picked out two main themes in this show, grief and rebirth.

Yoshiki represents all of the grief in this show. Specifically the grief of losing someone very close to you and having difficulties moving on while the rest of the world does. Yoshiki feels separated from everyone ... else in town because he alone is grieving his friend and he feels weird about it, like he shouldn't be grieving since Hikaru isn't dead. It becomes very clear that Yoshiki is an outsider in a lot of different social situations and I found a queer reading that can be placed onto this. I think this relationship would be better if Yoshiki was gay for Hikaru, I know the show does touch on this very lightly but I think making it cannon would add a lot of weight to the emotions that Yoshiki is feeling.

Moving on to Hikaru, I find him to be a very trans coded character. I mean he is a person that is rebirthed into a new life that is completely different from what he previous life. He has memories of a person that isn't him anymore, and his best friend describes him as being a completely different person, unrecognizable despite still being the same person at the end of the day. This new Hikaru finds new joy and love for his life and has a newfound excitement for the mundane purely because he's experiencing it as the new him. Also the feelings of being a monster and having no one that really understands you despite some making an effort to do so. There are a lot of details about his character that give off the same experiences of being trans, the good and the bad. Their is joy in being trans but there is also loneliness, a feeling of disconnection from your peers and community. He spends the whole show trying to learn more about himself. I don't know if this is a controversial reading for Hikaru but I related to a lot of his experiences and emotions that he felt and I think a lot of other trans people can find some solace in the relatability of Hikaru.

Moving away from analyzation of the series, this show is just really beautiful. It has a very distinct tone and it perfectly captures that cosmic incomprehensible horror. I really loved the mixed media vibe of this show with a lot of real world shots being mixed in with the animation, it gives the show a distinct feel and also elevates the horror as it's able to give an uncanny valley feel to a few of the scenes.

One wish I had for this show was more Asako, I really liked her character and I wish she had more to do within the series.

Mixed Feelings

I try to keep this spoiler free:
I tend to think that horror anime are usually very underwhelming and are worse than their manga counterparts. Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu is definitely not bad and I would argue that it´s better than most of the horror anime i´ve seen, but at the end of the day I felt like it was underwhelming at times. I think part of that is that anime in general struggles to deliver the same kind of subtle, creeping horror that manga does. In manga, the stillness and paneling can really build tension, but in anime that feeling can kind of flatten ... out unless the direction is really strong. That´s a medium/translation thing tho, and I think Hikaru ga shinda natsu did an alright job.

One person argued that homophobia held back this series from being more praised, and although that might or might not be true, to me personally all the episodes felt just alright the large majority of the time. I don´t think that really explains the issues I had though, since for me it was more about pacing and the fact that the horror didn´t really hit as hard as I wanted. They didn´t stand out much at all, atleast not until the very last 3 or so episodes. It ended right as things got me properly engaged and that made the whole season feel like a long setup rather than a complete experience. So instead of a satisfying arc, it feels like “it’s finally getting good… and now it’s over."

I´m not gonna pretend like i´m some master analyst of themes and such, and I probably missed some themes that might make the story better. I get that the show is going more for discomfort and that uncanny feeling of something being almost right but not quite, with identity and grief and all that, but I came for the horror and the unsettling nature of the supernatural and to me, that wasn´t really delivered in the same caliber that I longed for. I´m not against slow burns and things suddenly get scary, but this series tried to do that but the "scary" moments fell flat for me with the exception of the uneasyness of the shrine and when that old man... lashed out. But that was just uneasy, not scary.

I will probably watch the second season or read the manga, but I think there is much potential for this series to be much better, and i´m saying that because I started to care more at the end of season 1. Like how they started to connect some dots and tie the history together, the Indou shrine and their history as well as the villages actually made me more invested. That´s where it finally felt like things were paying off and getting properly interesting, but sadly that is kinda where S1 ended, so it ended up feeling more like a long setup than a complete experience.

When I started The Summer Hikaru Died, I was super hyped and excited. The premise was interesting right away, and the mysterious atmosphere really gave me chills. The show does a great job at pulling you in at the beginning with its unsettling tone and intriguing setup.

That said, while the story is still good, it starts to feel a bit inconsistent as it goes on. There are a lot of unanswered questions and plot holes that make parts of the story feel unfinished. The pacing is also very slow, and sometimes it feels like the story keeps circling around the same ideas without moving forward, ... which became frustrating at times.

Visually and audibly, the anime is fantastic. The sound design and the overall atmosphere are mesmerizing and really help build the eerie feeling the show is going for. Unfortunately, the strong presentation can’t fully make up for the narrative issues.

What started as a very interesting and chilling story gradually became boring for me. It also feels like the creators weren’t always sure what direction they wanted to take with the characters or the plot.

Overall, while The Summer Hikaru Died has a great atmosphere and strong audiovisual presentation, the slow pacing and unresolved story elements made it hard for me to fully enjoy. Because of that, I personally wouldn’t recommend it, even though it had a lot of potential.
