Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen - Kouhan-sen

Following the temporary retreat of the Altana Liberation Army from the Kabuki District, the state of the war has seemingly improved. However, as the Oniwaban, Shinsengumi, and residents of the district combat the army's remnants, Edo's greatest inventor Gengai Hiraga is abducted. Responsible for causing the enemy's withdrawal by rendering their weapons useless, Gengai's nanomachine virus is now at risk of being shut down.

Meanwhile, a laser capable of obliterating a planet is activated in Earth's orbit on the Liberation Army's mother ship. Another battle ensues when Shinsuke Takasugi and the rest of the Kiheitai arrive on the vessel to stop the weapon from firing. Forced to fight a war on two fronts, the Yorozuya and their allies must prevail on both sides to save Edo and the rest of the world.

Between parodies of One Piece and Bleach, absolute chaos, and surprisingly emotional moments, Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen - Kouhan-sen continues to prove why Gintama is such a unique work.

This part of the final saga begins after Utsuro's fall, and instead of simply moving on to more confrontations, the narrative slows down (at least for a moment) to show the consequences of the war. And this "breather" is not empty: it is full of meaning. We see how each character deals with the destruction, the losses, and the weight of everything that has happened up to that point.

One of the most interesting points of this phase ... is the role reversal between Gintoki Sakata and Shouyou Yoshida. Throughout the series, Shouyou was the figure who guided, protected, and shaped Gintoki. Here, this dynamic is reversed: Gintoki assumes the role of protector, almost as if he were trying to repay everything he received. This change isn't just symbolic; it carries enormous emotional weight and reinforces how much the protagonist has evolved.

The narrative also plays with a "time jump" which, despite having a somewhat deceptive (and even comical, in the series' best style) tone, serves to explore an alternative scenario: what if Gintoki had really left everything behind? What if he had abandoned Edo and followed another path?

It's in this context that we see more mature (and at the same time different) versions of Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura. Especially Shinpachi, who undergoes a striking, almost shocking change at first glance. This approach is extremely interesting because it shows the characters' potential outside of Gintoki's direct shadow. Honestly, it works so well that it wouldn't be absurd to imagine this as a possible alternative ending for the work.

But of course… we're talking about Gintama. And nothing stays serious for too long.

Even amidst reflections, farewells, and alternative possibilities, humor returns, sometimes abruptly, sometimes brilliantly. Parodies, nonsense, and subversions of expectations remain, constantly reminding us of the series' identity. This mix of heavy drama with absurd comedy is something few works manage to balance, but here it's practically a signature.

Visually, this part continues to impress. Bandai Namco Pictures delivers consistent and, at various moments, spectacular animation. Perhaps it's not exactly the same type of production as studios like MAPPA or Ufotable in terms of style, but in emotional impact and scene direction, it easily competes. The expressions, timing, and key scenes are extremely well executed.

In the end, Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen - Kouhan-sen functions almost as a "near-ending." It plays with the idea of ​​closure, tests possibilities, and delivers moments that could, by themselves, close the story with dignity. But at the same time, it prepares the ground for the true ending.

It's a part that mixes everything: emotion, comedy, reflection, and that characteristic chaos that only Gintama can deliver.

Highly recommended. Final grade: 9/10.

Entre paródias de One Piece e Bleach, caos absoluto e momentos surpreendentemente emocionais, Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen - Kouhan-sen segue provando por que Gintama é uma obra tão única.

Essa parte da saga final começa após a queda de Utsuro, e ao invés de simplesmente avançar para mais confrontos, a narrativa desacelera (pelo menos por um momento) para mostrar as consequências da guerra. E esse “respiro” não é vazio: ele é carregado de significado. Vemos como cada personagem lida com a destruição, com as perdas e com o peso de tudo que aconteceu até ali.

Um dos pontos mais interessantes dessa fase é a inversão de papéis entre Gintoki Sakata e Shouyou Yoshida. Durante toda a obra, Shouyou foi a figura que guiou, protegeu e moldou Gintoki. Aqui, essa dinâmica se inverte: Gintoki assume o papel de protetor, quase como se estivesse tentando retribuir tudo aquilo que recebeu. Essa mudança não é só simbólica, ela carrega um peso emocional enorme e reforça o quanto o protagonista evoluiu.

A narrativa também brinca com um “salto temporal” que, apesar de ter um tom meio enganoso (e até cômico, no melhor estilo da série), serve para explorar um cenário alternativo: e se Gintoki realmente tivesse deixado tudo para trás? E se tivesse abandonado Edo e seguido outro caminho?

É nesse contexto que vemos versões mais maduras (e ao mesmo tempo diferentes) de Kagura e Shinpachi Shimura. Especialmente Shinpachi, que passa por uma mudança marcante, quase chocante à primeira vista. Essa abordagem é extremamente interessante porque mostra o potencial dos personagens fora da sombra direta do Gintoki. Honestamente, funciona tão bem que não seria absurdo imaginar isso como um possível final alternativo para a obra.

Mas claro… estamos falando de Gintama. E nada fica sério por tempo demais.

Mesmo em meio a reflexões, despedidas e possibilidades alternativas, o humor retorna, às vezes de forma abrupta, às vezes de forma genial. As paródias, o nonsense e as quebras de expectativa continuam presentes, lembrando constantemente a identidade da série. Essa mistura de drama pesado com comédia absurda é algo que poucas obras conseguem equilibrar, mas aqui isso já é praticamente uma assinatura.

Visualmente, essa parte continua impressionando. Bandai Namco Pictures entrega uma animação consistente e, em vários momentos, espetacular. Talvez não seja exatamente o mesmo tipo de produção de estúdios como MAPPA ou Ufotable em termos de estilo, mas em impacto emocional e direção de cenas, compete facilmente. As expressões, o timing e as cenas-chave são extremamente bem executadas.

No fim das contas, Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen - Kouhan-sen funciona quase como um “quase final”. Ele brinca com a ideia de encerramento, testa possibilidades e entrega momentos que poderiam, por si só, fechar a história com dignidade. Mas ao mesmo tempo, prepara o terreno para o verdadeiro desfecho.

É uma parte que mistura tudo: emoção, comédia, reflexão e aquele caos característico que só Gintama consegue entregar.

Recomendo muito.

Mixed Feelings

Gintama is finally over (Except for the final)

It has been one hellva ride holy

I have been watching Gintama for over a year actually, with taking month long breaks within the seasons haha.

This season? I did not enjoy

First off Ill get the good off the way.

... The last 4 episodes? Amazing. That is what I like about Gintama. The comedy!!!!!!
The last 4 episodes, and a few sprinkled here and there, great great comedy.
As soon as the action part of the arc ended, it was amazing. Seriously.

The rest? It was a lot of action. And I do not like action as much.

It was just the space invaders invading the weird glasses dudes ships with MADAO making a nice appearance. It was a little much if I am being real. And quite boring.

As soo as it ended?
The comedy was amazing.

A like 9/10 for the last 4 episodes + 1 more episode for the other comedy

I love Gintama (anime watcher only) because it is a slice of life comedy with a main story line that will be visit from time to time, the progression of the main story line is slow but works very well when it is imbedded within the casual slice of lifes which made them blend in naturally (we can tell shounen isn't Gorilla's strong suit from the previous season OVA and specials but they blended in well, a change of tastes). But this season goes full on shounen which gave me a Naruto and On piece vibe... but only the bad parts. The pacing is super ... draggy, the dialogs are generic and boring, and the character building is non-existed. To sum up this season is draggy, generic, boring, and very skippable.
In my opinion at least, this season abandoned everything makes Gintama great, and also a prime example of how a bad shounen anime should be like.
