Fangkai Nage Nuwu

Modern man Cheng Yan unexpectedly dies and his soul travels to a medieval European-style otherworldly continent, becoming Roland, the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Graycastle. This playboy prince saves the witch Anna at an execution scene and is shocked to discover that magic really exists in this medieval-style otherworld.

When Anna, as a witch, displays her magical skills, Roland realizes that magic can replace some modern technology, so he formulates a "great development of magical industry" plan. Thus, in an era where everyone hates witches, the independent Roland begins to recruit witches, using their magic to transform Border Town and improve the lives of himself and the locals.

In addition to using magic to develop industry, Roland also introduces modern business ideas to Border Town. Under Roland's leadership, people manufacture firearms, and Roland gains public support. As the number of witches in Roland's camp increases, the magical industry continues to improve. At the same time, Roland will face battles with great families and other princes and princesses.

As his territory expands, Roland successfully creates a harmonious coexistence between witches and ordinary people, gradually bringing the western territory of Graycastle and even the entire kingdom under his rule, and slowly uncovering the secrets of the devil race and the Witch Empire.

This anime is one of best I have ever watched. Story, character, everything was perfect. I don't know why they cancelled the continuation. I am desperate to watch more. Why they are not continuing such a good anime. I gonna rate this anime overall 10/10 . I wish they will continue the series. Story was unique but interesting. Everyone episode made me curious to watch next one.
Character design was awesome
All the characters and story was realistic. There is no stupidity like other Isekai anime. Nice story progression. Character development was good.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (8/8 eps)

I have rated this show 4 stars (bad) and I stand by that rating. It is bad. Also, I like it for some reason. Everything about it is boring. The characters, the plot, the setting, the animation, all the designs... just look at that boring-ass castle! It's just so bland... and slow.

It's probably a translation issue but "Release That Witch" sounds comical. Don't get the wrong idea. This show is not funny at all. It's not trying to be funny. It doesn't even have any comic relief. OK, I can say one good thing about it. It's not one of those shows that tries ... but fails to be funny. It's not trying and it's succeeding at not being funny. Just don't get the wrong idea from the name.

Oh also it has almost nothing to do with witches so don't get the wrong idea about that either. There are witches in the show and at least one of them is playing an important role that makes the main guy's plans possible but she does it all almost entirely off camera. She is introduced, we know she's a witch, and we know about the witchy stuff she's doing but I guess that's enough. The show is not really about witches.

What it actually is about is nothing new. It's yet another isekai. This is the type where a guy's consciousness inhabits an existing guy the other world. There are no Quantum Link hijinks about him trying to blend in and prevent anyone from noticing that he's a whole different guy all of a sudden. Remember, it is not a comedy. Instead he simply fools everyone immediately and never raises a single suspicion.

So, it's not the type of isekai where the guy gets some cheat skill and thankfully it's not the dreadful type where he has a fucking status screen that shows his level and other dumbass video game shit like that. It's the type where he (luckily a smart guy who paid attention in school) is able to use all his modern era knowledge to impress all the yokels in the medieval world he woke up in. Ah, it's the "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" type of isekai! You should go read that instead of watching this, I promise it's much more entertaining.

Right so anyway, I don't know why but I like it. Please believe me that is bad and you probably will not like it. You should not like it and neither should I but here we are...

Every isekai comes with built in flaws that most anime never explore because doing so would ruin the power fantasy this genre strives for. Take the classic: NEET who lacks the willpower to leave his room in peaceful modern Japan is suddenly summoned to a fantasy world full of monsters, violence and danger but somehow immediately becomes charismatic, brave and socially adept. That is unbelievable at every level but we ignore it either because the show is entertaining enough or because the narrative is written in a way that makes those problems feel less important than they really are. But sometimes a series stumbles so ... hard and everything is so absurd that you can't look past its flaws even if you're trying to. Release That Witch is one of them. Let's get to it.

RolanGOD and the Nobodies:
We follow a modern man that got transmigrated into the body of Roland Winbledon, the lazy, incompetent prince(there are others, but irrelevant at this point) of this kingdom that no one expects anything from. Despite an unmentioned background, this modern man demonstrates working knowledge of cement production, firearms engineering, military training doctrine, administrative reform, trade economics, black powder chemistry, steam engine construction, education theory and more. Dude has five lifetimes of specialized knowledge. His mind works like a 3D printer, he can make exact schematics for muskets of the 17th century and steam engines we haven't used for a hundred years, can pull gunpowder out of his ass and teach metallurgy, welding and other complex crafts to a random teenager girl of a medieval world. Because of this, I named him RolanGOD.

Characterization across the whole board is superficial. RolanGOD himself is just a collection of ideal traits: rational, morally upright and yadda yadda, without meaningful internal or external conflict despite him doing things that go entirely against the traditions of this era.
The other characters are negligible. A handful of generic archetypes(old man advisor, loyal knight, grateful commoner, cartoonish villain) that you will forget a few minutes after they're introduced because they have no personality or development and only serve a utilitarian purpose for RolanGOD. The witches themselves are like this. Anna, the first witch he meets, can make fire out of nowhere. He has her making cement and craft items for him. Then comes Nana, a younger girl that has healing powers. She cures a few wounded animals. Nightingale is the older, experienced witch introduced a bit later and mainly makes a few sassy comments to RolanGOD. Other than this they barely appear or say anything, despite the name of the show. This is the only thing I'll relent on because it's early and they'll likely be developed further down the line. But, in 8 episodes, you couldn't care less about anything they say, do or whatever happens to them.

The characters here also don't behave like real people. Take Barov, old man counselor of Roland, who has known the original for a long time, watches this mofo have a 180 degree change in personality and... nothing. We get half of an episode showing things from Barov's perspective and never once he questions this. He didn't need to make a show out of it, but at least a comment saying how weird it is that the incompetent prince is suddenly a master of all knowledge of the universe and even knowledge out of the universe. We only get a "He's finally focusing on his duties!" and call it a day. When RolanGOD forms a militia to fight in the Month Of Demons(some weird event where demonic beasts attack), one of his priorities is to teach these random peasants to read and write because this will make them "cultured", in his own words. What? If you're going to fight for survival against monsters with a bunch of nobodies that never held a sword, you should be teaching them drums and horn signals as they did in this era so they can follow tactics and strategy mid battle. Being able to read will literally add nothing to their survival at this specific stage. It's just some disjointed excuse to make RolanGOD seem like an enlightened ruler.

Worldbuilding (Lack of it, really):
We are in Border Town, the place RolanGOD is supposed to be administering. A poor, backwater city that depends on its neighbor, the Stronghold, for basic supplies. One peasant even mentions that he hasn't eaten an egg in an year. Except that eggs were historically one of the most common, accessible foods available to the peasantry because chickens reproduce quick, make a lot of eggs and eat most things. If Border Town doesn't have eggs, these people should be in last stage famine or already dead by episode 1. Not even the supplies from the Stronghold would be able to sustain them if they lack the bare minimum.

Then there’s the production of the items Roland designs. Most of them are manufactured by Anna. You don't need technical knowledge of the field, I don't have it myself, to understand that metallurgy is a difficult and meticulous craft that we refined over centuries of trial and error. Just because you're a witch that can spit fire from your fingers you won't magically aquire the skillset to work metal, shape it and produce high quality items. This becomes even more absurd when you consider the level of technology Roland is introducing. The tools available in this setting are centuries behind the mechanisms he designs. It's a clear early medieval era that he's kickstarting industrialization, so he wouldn’t just need to know the item he wants to make but also every tool required to manufacture it, and then teach Anna how to use them. Hell, even the craftsmen/weaponsmiths of this era would have difficulty understanding modern craft because of the amount of new tools and techniques introduced, but a random girl, daughter of a miner, who only knows how to read and write, can actually do all of this, and her lighting a candle out of her finger bypasses all the tools needed to produce it.

There's also the powder. In real life, even powerful states struggled to adopt firearms because gunpowder production required careful handling of its ingredients, significant space for processing, time for refinement and the resources to sustain the whole operation. Yet RolanGOD seems to pull some of it out his pocket and the only explanation we get is "I've modified snow powder to do it". That's not how it works, bro.

And finally, the people. We don't see much of Border Town's people other than when RolanGOD is riding by, delivering a speech or training with the militia. We just mainly know that they're a bunch of poor NPCs and that's about it. Because of a certain event, RolanGOD preaches to them, saying witches aren't evil and the church is a fraud. The peasants are intially shocked but eventually come around to his way of thinking. Every person here has grown up being taught that witches are evil dangerous demons. But RolanGOD said the word, so they'll now go against the doctrines that defines their lives.

The show's world is not a place with its own logic that the protagonist must navigate. It's a plain, blank page for RolanGOD to draw on as much as he wants. Everything he does is acceptable, everything works immediately, no one has opinions, nothing has backlash, there's no culture, no tradition, nothing.

The Evil Minds(of Manchildren):
There's a small nuance to them. Before Roland took over, the Stronghold used to extort Border Town, basically having them send all the ore they mined to trade for food. So poor Border Town was forever in the mud. Apparently, the Stronghold even let some of them starve to death during the Months of Demons(and somehow Border Town never looked for alternatives), so they're obviously threatened when the protagonist takes charge and begins finding new trade partners and ways to break from the Stronghold. But even if there's a nice little friction here, the villains are your generic 101 assholes to the point that one of them openly mocks RolanGOD, the prince of the country, to his face. This same dude gives him a chest with one single gold coin inside as a clear provocation. As if mocking royalty wasn't a crime against the crown in any monarchy ever. They thought we wouldn't understand this guy is an asshole despite acting like a generic asshole every second he was on the screen.

The other villain, lord of Stronghold, is only different in the sense he doesn't speak much. He's just the proud, brooding asshole who ignores the warnings of his counselor and is power hungry enough to want to fight a prince, and thus the crown he represents, for a backwater town that has no chickens or eggs. But these guys, like the other nobodies, are just background fixtures we barely see or care about to even call villains. More like a small nuisance that surely RolanGOD will easily deal with in the future, as he does everything else.

Conclusion:
All in all, this is a subpar story with forgettable characters, a simple and linear plot void of tension, conflict, drama or excitement. It's a kingdom building isekai in which the building is done in the most superficial and convenient way for the MC. If you enjoy watching a know it all breeze through a mediocre medieval setting for twenty minutes at a time, Release That Witch will serve you adequately.

As for me, I'll forget about it the moment I post this review.
