Boku no Hero Academia

The appearance of "quirks," newly discovered super powers, has been steadily increasing over the years, with 80 percent of humanity possessing various abilities from manipulation of elements to shapeshifting. This leaves the remainder of the world completely powerless, and Izuku Midoriya is one such individual.

Since he was a child, the ambitious middle schooler has wanted nothing more than to be a hero. Izuku's unfair fate leaves him admiring heroes and taking notes on them whenever he can. But it seems that his persistence has borne some fruit: Izuku meets the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might's quirk is a unique ability that can be inherited, and he has chosen Izuku to be his successor!

Enduring many months of grueling training, Izuku enrolls in UA High, a prestigious high school famous for its excellent hero training program, and this year's freshmen look especially promising. With his bizarre but talented classmates and the looming threat of a villainous organization, Izuku will soon learn what it really means to be a hero.

I watched it when it first came out, and the idea of ​​a superhero anime seemed really cool to me. The first few episodes portray Midoriya as a coward but with determination, making you want him to achieve his dream. And when they introduce All Might, he seems like the best superhero.

Most of the episodes are enjoyable, and you want to see more, especially about the powers of the other characters and how they use them. Although we don't see much of the pros, it's clear there's a difference between the students and them, which is why they need to learn how to use their ... powers.

I feel the ending is quite good, especially the final fight. Although I expected Midoriya to do a bit more, I feel he did enough to stand out. I liked that they hinted at a continuation, which makes you look forward to the next season.

In conclusion, I know there are many things that could have been improved, but I feel they knew what they were doing to make this anime as famous as it became. I enjoyed it a lot when I first saw it, and watching it again made me enjoy it all over again.

Mixed Feelings

To be honest, this season was a little better than I remembered, the way the characters are built based on difficult situations was probably one of the best things. The way the characters' relationships are established also feels quite genuine, and although for the first season it was quite good.

Although honestly, it doesn't stray from the classic shonen that has been done a thousand times, the main villains only appear once and their appearance is actually intimidating but feels brief.

This is a review made after completing all 8 seasons for those wondering if they should start My Hero Academia. I will try to be brief.

If this is your first shonen and/or you are a teenager (target demographic) MHA might be enjoyable for you. It's accessible, it's fun, it's fairly straightforward and easy to understand, it's animated well, and generally checks all base expectations for quality.

If you are an avid anime consumer, or generally critical of the content you take in, so much that you even check reviews before picking up a series, this series might not be for you.

Seeing as this a platform generally ... for active anime watchers, I've marked my review as not recommended, because personally I would not recommend this to most watchers, at least not over many other series of equal or smaller length. Keeping in mind it's 8 seasons, it's a large investment if you are the type to finish whole series. What the story accomplishes in that time is better told in other series of similar subjects.

Main complaint that has ruined the series every episode is the way it's written to prioritize comprehension of events, hence creating a feeling that the writers assume you have no writing comprehension whatsoever, just about holding your hand through anything remotely surprising. There's hardly any mystery to most encounters, the show does not give you any chance to wonder about the characteristics of any given character, it will outright give you a detailed description of who they are with little room for mystery or curiosity, and in combat scenes where characters might do something unexpected or subversive, you'll get a break from the action to explain in detail what just happened, it never simply let the viewer wonder or sit in confusion, compared to many other shows with power wielding characters. You'll never have to wonder what a character might've secretly done in a battle because the show will exposition it time after time, and that's really the main crux of the writing overall, it chooses to outright tell you, rather than "show don't tell".

The show can get exhausting quickly, mainly because the gravity of events and emotions are very superficial, it tries hard to pull at your heartstrings but ultimately only does so in a shallow exploration of the subjects, and once you notice it lacks depth, nothing will really correctly reflect the intensity the show tries to sell you. The main cast is ultimately in very little danger, even the death of a certain character in the final arc, ends up having little impact after the plot develops. Yes it's a show for teens, so adjusting your expectations for a pg13 story would be best to actually be enjoyable, but ultimately I'm not certain that it does the best job with it's messaging if that's the case.

While active in exploring subjects like character redemption, social hierarchies, flaws in systems of power, belonging, prejudice, familiar trauma, legacy, and even the flaws in morality as a compass for social growth, at the end of most conflict, the good guys beat the bad guys, and all the bad guys are result of bad nurture from a society or individual that failed them. Most villains end just being a misunderstood character that took a bad turn one day after society didn't properly accommodate their needs and wants, so while the villains are correct in their motivation to demolish a system that is failing many, by the end there's been little to address and change the system other than vague words from the hero association trying alternatives, and a scene showing an individual preventing the next potential big bad through individual action.

In conclusion, MHA can be a fun, lighthearted kids with powers show, with an accessible exploration of deeper subjects, and generally a large focus on worldbuilding, but as well some individual character development that's just barely above acceptable, but if you're one who wants to feel changed after an anime, go watch something like mob psycho instead.
