What I would like to see explored in an isekai. Part IV of ?
MENTAL AGE VS PHYSICAL AGE
This one is something that is my gripe with isekais that use reincarnation as it’s MC misplacement method. I saw it in “Mushoku Tensei” (Rudeus), “The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat” (Lugh) , “The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure: Serving Gods Who Go Too Far” (Cain) and others. Those are just the ones from the top of my head.
In all of them you get someone who is older, in the case of “Mushoku Tensei” and “Finest Assassin” , far older than the designated love interests. How does that work? I get that teenage bodies will have hormonal problems, involuntary boners and all that stuff I never have to deal with again. As a physical reaction I don’t have much to say but as a psychological reaction? Sit down and let’s talk.
Why would a fully grown adult be interested romantically in a child? I get that in most cases those isekai’s hide behind “You get married before 15” trash but come on. I’m having a hard time believing that someone who is 30, 40 or 50 years old mentally would be interested in a child of 13-16 years old. Unless the writers are trying to tell me that the isekaied MCs are perwerts… ok, in case of Rudeus from “Mushoku Tensei” that is a posability, but Lugh from “Finest assassin”? Lugh’s “love” interest could be his granddaughter. What. The. Fuck? If he truly falls in love with someone so young he is worse than Rudeus. In terms of mental development he is a 40+ (probably closer to 50+ judging by the way he looks) old man. He is the hero of the story. I may be old and have classic sensitivities, but I think that the hero should be someone we can look up to — if he is to win at the end — or be a cautionary tale — if he is to loose at the end. Lugh is someone who is positioned as a positive hero, that does not so positive things (well… I guess that depends on your morality), so we are to root for him. Why the fuck would I want a hebephile (or ephebophile, I can’t remember the age of his love interest now) to have a happy end?
Now… if the girl was at least 20… no… that would still be pretty weird but at least not a disorder. You want to play the love card? No problem. Make the love interest interested and the MC giving them the cold shoulder until they are 20 or more. Problem solved. Why does it have to be a romance between teenagers and especially young teenagers?
Cain from “The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure: Serving Gods Who Go Too Far” isn’t in a better spot. She is a reincarnated teenager. By the time he get’s his 2 young… very young… very, very young wives to be, he would be about 30 mentaly. I guess that also depends on how mental development works with reincarnation. But even if it doesn’t work and he would be stuck at 16 (I think, I can’t remember how old he was), why would a 16 year old be interested in a damn 13 year old. 3 years isn’t a big deal… in adults. When it comes to teenagers it’s a huge difference because of the hormonal changes.
I actually would like to see a show that addresses that. Maybe show the MC having hormonal problems and having boners in the worst times, maybe he would blush or sweat under some circumstances. Make it clear that all his reactions are only physical. Let me accent that: ONLY PHYSICAL! I want him to mentally suffer because of that and feel disgust. I want a 16 year old kid with a 40+ year old mind to actually feel disgust then a 13 year old tries to seduce him. No half assed reactions. I want it to be clear that he is not interested and feels more than uncomfortable because of that. You can even make it make sense. Let him sweat. The love interest would interpret it as interest but it would be because of stress and wanting to get the hell out of here. That would not only be a pretty organic way to add some comedy but it would show the MC as someone who has morals.
If you don’t want to deal with the subject at all just make it clear that the MC is more interested in women (or men) 20 or 30+. That way you could still have a potential romance, with the MC just waiting to grow up, and some comedy with 30+ women trying to deal with rumors of a 16year old MC preferring them. You can do a lot of things with that.
I just don’t get why most anime are interested in giving the MCs psychiatric disorders.
