Rewatching My Dress-up Darling
Anime Relations:
Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru, Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru Season 2
My Dress-Up Darling aired from January till March 2022 and I did watch it at the time. It was an amazing anime, and it was about the interaction of Marin and Gojou. Everything else was just so good. Rewatching it again in 2026 I was struck by what an entertaining story it was, and how the personality of Marin was exactly opposite to that of Gojou, yet they just worked so well together.
Marin was a cosplayer who found their talented creator, and from there things just ran. Gojou was one of those quiet types that gets on with life, seemingly oblivious to his classmates, society and everything else around him. His circle was small compared to the boisterous Marin who had friends, fashion, an absent father, and the nails from hell. Yet she was totally likeable, and I felt that she was an almost an atypical teenager. As the series develops so you can see her ever growing affection for the stoic Gojou, and you get to see his awakening as he deals with sexuality, his uninhibited partner and his ever increasing knowledge.
Two other characters make an appearance: Sajuna and Shinju; and while Sajuna was a pompous brat Shinju was an awkward middle schooler who lived in the shadow of her cuter sister. Gojou really brings out the best of Shinju and even Sajuna admits that he did somethng very special.
There are "YIKES!" moments in the show, and at times the animation feels awkward, but it never really detracts from the story.
The second season is now in my rewatch queue, but to be honest I was not impressed at all. I will continue this after I am done with my rewatch.
