My Thoughts on You and I are Polar Opposites (Season 1)
Anime Relations:
Seihantai na Kimi to Boku
You and I are Polar Opposites focuses on Suzuki and Tani, as Suzuki has had feelings for Tani for many months and eventually confesses. When they eventually date, as Tani is quieter and blunter, while Suzuki is more energetic and bubblier, they are opposites of each other. I like how it deals with social anxiety and social situations within the school environment regarding hierarchy, and as a couple with Suzuki and Tani, as they both grow together naturally, which is shown more with Tani than Suzuki, which leads their friend group to change from a positive experience not bound to any school social standing.
This leads Yamada to pursue his crush from many years, called Nishi, as she is a quiet, socially anxious girl who has difficulty talking to people, only talks to her friend Honda, while Yamada is more outgoing and more talkative, but a bit dense, as he has difficulty reading the room. As Suzuki’s confession sparks something in him to talk to her and become friends before telling how he feels from the years of love that he has built up for her.
Taira is an interesting character as part of the comedy; he acts like the straight man to play off the jokes, which made me laugh a couple of times, as most of the time, he is fed up with the group's antics. He feels that he was scorned during middle school and doesn’t value friendships as he didn’t have any, and he wishes he did. There is an interesting dynamic with him and Azuma, as she lost her friend group and boyfriend in middle school and feels cold to relationships and dating. When the group go bowling, Taira and Azuma have a heart-to-heart, saying that no one values her and just uses her, due to her forgiving nature, which doesn’t allow her to feel hate towards anyone. She changes her tone as she is warmer, and she laughs at his misfortune, which makes her feel comfortable around him and to talk to him about her feelings. I think this will be explored more in season 2 as foundations are just set, while Nishi’s and Yamada’s relationship is there, but they cannot express their feelings yet, but Suzuki is suspicious of them, while with Suzuki’s and Tani’s relationship will lead to a kiss, and they laid out the breadcrumbs for Season 2.
