Synopsis

From a young age, Akane Ousaki has always loved to watch her father, Tooru, practice and perform rakugo, a form of traditional Japanese comedic storytelling. Rakugo performers are split into three ranks, with the highest, shinuchi, only granted to the very best performers after they pass a difficult promotion test. When Tooru takes the exam, Akane experiences her father putting on a stellar performance in front of a big crowd and judges, but the strict main judge, Isshou Arakawa, still fails him, forcing him to quit rakugo.

Ever since, Akane has been diligently practicing rakugo herself. Now a senior in high school, she coincidentally lands a spot to perform in front of a crowd with the help of Shiguma Arakawa, Tooru's former teacher. Her splendid performance surprises everyone and is just the beginning: Shiguma appoints her as his new apprentice, and with his help, Akane sets out to become a shinuchi in her father's place.

It is difficult to understand how this anime is being overlooked among the other new entries this season. It has the same director as Witch Hat Atelier and stands on par with it.

The subject and setting are excellent. Rakugo is the art of Japanese storytelling. There are a handful of other anime with the same subject, but each gives its own take and its own premise. Akane-banashi features Akane who falls in love with rakugo for her own reasons.

The animation is splendid. The expression of the eyes in particular reminds one of Oshi no Ko. But hair and movements are also handled with ...

Thoroughly entertaining thus far. I knew nothing about rakugo going in, so much of the novelty of this show comes from the subject matter. Nonetheless, I thought the first episode was very well executed; it gets you invested in Akane and her father's relationship straight away. Excellent pacing, dialogue and emotional weight. When it transitions fully into the fmc's story, I was already on board. Thus far, Akane herself is undoubtedly the highlight. She is a charming and likeable fmc right from the off, fiery and determined while still being funny and vulnerable. You gladly root for her.

The art style is colourful and the ...

I usually quite like the Rakugo theme, so I was really looking into this anime. However, the first few episodes have been very disappointing due to the overly exaggerated presentation, although the plot seems to be quite interesting. All the stories of Rakugo by themselves are already very good to watch, since they are meant to be professional performances. However, this anime added too many effects and narration while playing the performance, which made it highly distracting and confusing to watch, and the Rakugo was less enjoyable as a result. For this reason, I would recommend watching "Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu", which embeds Rakugo well ...
