Desperate for answers about her friend's disappearance, Waka breaches the Tokyo danger zone in search of clues. Instead, she finds Tokinaga, a researcher with the Anti-God Scientific Research Institute. While Waka tries to decide if she should trust Tokinaga, he quickly realizes Waka is hiding a dangerous secret of her own—one that may just be the key to killing off the gods once and for all.

This is absolutely one of the best stories I've read so far.

Fights are interesting, although not overly abundant, but the philosophy about life and humans, societies and struggles, is over the top good.

The most infectious thing in the world is an idea, and idea is portrayed by humans, therefore humans must be eradicated or submitted to (This is mine, not from manga)

I'm very conflicted about After God. If I were to sum up the manga in a single word, it would be 'inconsistent'. I bounced off of it the first time I tried to read it, but I'm glad I came back to it.
The story is about two characters: Waka and Tokinaga. Tokinaga is a researcher at the institute created to search for ways to combat world-shatteringly powerful beings called Gods which have invaded Japan, and Waka is a young girl with unique and unusual abilities.

Starting with what I can uncontroversially praise, the art is absolutely gorgeous. The visuals are overall an incredibly high ... quality. weaving symbolism into the panels that fits thematically with the subject of religion and gods. One of the very nice elements is the way it manages to weave the pages and panels with creative borders that almost make it look like a reaaally fucked up Shoujo manga.
The other thing about the visuals that deserves praise is the shadows, yes, but more importantly the colouration. Not many manga regularly use colour, and I'm very thankful After God does. Actually, the first time it did was when I realised I loved it. Initially.

The problems really begin with the story and writing. After God is very confusingly written, at least to me. That was actually why I couldn't quite get invested the first time I tried reading it. It has a tendency to try and create intrigue with one big, shocking moment, and then snapping back in time to give context around the event, or reversing course in some way. Tokinaga's conversations with a character called Alula are the best example of this to me. Very difficult to track.

On the positive side of the writing, it can be quite funny. There's quite a bit of humour that doesn't land, but a surprising amount that did for me.

The writing is also the biggest, but not only, source of inconsistency. At the beginning of the story, it seems like it might be an action oriented manga. I think there might be 3 fight scenes in the whole manga, so that doesn't pan out. Next, it seems like Waka is the main character, until in more recent chapters it hard pivots into focusing on Tokinaga, with Waka barely showing up. Between all of these, there were a lot of parts of the story I really liked and a lot that began to lose my interest.

In summary, After God is difficult to recommend. Some parts of the manga are a minimum of a 9, some parts were maybe a 6. In spite of the world-class art, the story's insistence on wiithholding information from the reader hurts the experience. I would probably recommend it if you are interested in a very dense read, but not otherwise.

Absolutely, jaw droppingly beautiful on the panel by panel level, but at a certain point you have to ask "what is this beauty in service of, what is the art cohesively saying?" Sure, the spreads and the drawings of gods are incredible—they carry an effect of immense religious awe and wonder, and I have no doubt that the concept art which was made in the early stages of development for this series must be impeccable—but the narrative undercuts all of that, with its by the numbers reduction of gods into battle opponents, and its characters undercut the beauty even worse, spouting badly written and badly ...
