Kyoto Animation announced an anime movie adaptation of John Tarachine's Umi ga Hashiru End Roll (The Credits Roll Into the Sea) manga on Monday, scheduled to open in theaters in 2027.

Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden, City the Animation) is directing the anime at Kyoto Animation. Shochiku is distributing the movie.

Tarachine serialized the slice of life manga in Mystery Bonita magazine from October 2020 to November 2025. Akita Shoten published the eighth volume in July 2025, with the ninth and final volume set to go on sale on May 15.

Dark Horse licensed the manga in English in August 2025 and will release the first volume on July 7.

Umi ga Hashiru End Roll ranked first and sixth in the Female Readers category in the 2022 and 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings, respectively. The manga was also nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho Awards and placed in the Unique Story/Art category in MyAnimeList's 2024 and 2025 editions of You Should Read This Manga.

Synopsis
Umiko Chino, a 65-year-old widow, has no noteworthy hobbies to speak of. When her VCR stops working, Umiko decides to pay a visit to the cinema, like she once did with her husband on their first date. However, instead of focusing on the movie, her gaze is fixed upon the audience—and on one young-looking person in particular.

After the credits roll, the mysterious person introduces themself to Umiko as Kai Hamauchi—a male college student majoring in film. Umiko asks him to fix her VCR, and Kai obliges. Yet, before Kai leaves, he asks Umiko a question that changes the course of her life: would she like to make a movie with him? [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I'm surprised that yet another work with canonical LGBTQ+ characters is getting an anime adaptation. Hikaru, Kowloon Generic, Marriagetoxin, and now this? Are we back in the early 2000s?? Fascinating.

Kyoto Animation finally adapting a Shoujo/Josei manga into anime? In what universe are we in now?

This will be good to watch in cinemams coz the manga is really good. I'm really excited about this as I do like how they produce anime movies especially the stand alone one like A Silent Voice. Hopefully this will be as good or even better than that.

I miss when Kyoto animation animated so much variety of shows before the fire tragedy, now they keep animating obscure manga that nobody knows about and every project that has Dragon Maid in it's title while thousands of manga and light novels are waiting to be animated with their talent or animated by the Mid Staff etc. I don't even anymore maaaan......

Finally, another standalone movie from KyoAni after A Silent Voice and it’s directed by the same director behind Violet Evergarden. This is definitely going to be an emotional ride.

First Jump, and now something from Akita Shoten... KyoAni’s actually going crazy lol.

Not expecting much since it’s Ishidate, but maybe this ends up being his first solid project at this company.

A KyoAni project about a 65-year-old grandma? I'm down.

I feel like a 10-volume slice-of-life manga could've been a series, though.

I have head some great things about this manga, and it is being made by KyoAni as well? This is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
