Sousou no Frieren

During their decade-long quest to defeat the Demon King, the members of the hero's party—Himmel himself, the priest Heiter, the dwarf warrior Eisen, and the elven mage Frieren—forge bonds through adventures and battles, creating unforgettable precious memories for most of them.

However, the time that Frieren spends with her comrades is equivalent to merely a fraction of her life, which has lasted over a thousand years. When the party disbands after their victory, Frieren casually returns to her "usual" routine of collecting spells across the continent. Due to her different sense of time, she seemingly holds no strong feelings toward the experiences she went through.

As the years pass, Frieren gradually realizes how her days in the hero's party truly impacted her. Witnessing the deaths of two of her former companions, Frieren begins to regret having taken their presence for granted; she vows to better understand humans and create real personal connections. Although the story of that once memorable journey has long ended, a new tale is about to begin.

"Sousou no Frieren" is not the kind of anime that uses action as the main element, on the contrary, everything unfolds slowly ... which I think helps a lot with the final result

The story begins where most anime would end... After the heroes return home victorious from the fight with the Demon King but for Frieren who is an elf who has an extremely long life to live, she considers the ten-year adventure that she had not as a great achievement and rather a small fragment of her life.. at least at first glance

What seemed brilliant to me is the way the relationships are ... built. At first, Frieren seems emotionally distant, but along the way, through new memories and interactions, you start to see how she learns… very slowly what it means to value people and small moments

Visually, the anime is Brilliant, and it has by far one if not the best Animation made by the MadHouse studio which contributes enormously to the overall vibe

Although for some it may seem "too slow" I think it's worth giving it a chance and, tocamia this slow pace is the main piece of the series

Essentially, "Frieren" is not about the adventure, but about what remains after it. About memories, about people who come and go, and about how much it matters to understand things… even if sometimes you do it too late

Mixed Feelings

Let me start by saying the anime is good; it's just overrated af, kinda like FMA. Does it deserve to be the best anime ever done? Not a chance. But that doesn't make it a bad anime. The animation is excellent, but adapting the story has a long way to go. Around episode 20 the anime just starts to go really slow for no reason. Also... It makes no sense. In a world where you are super strong, and there's no authority, nothing stops you from going somewhere... The "we need to get mage certified" part is such a big plot hole and cliché. There ... is absolutely 0 reason to do it, and if there is, it's not explained in the anime.

The community just chose to reward mid-animes for some reason. I had to force myself to watch it; there's no hook. Probably in the top 10 in animation quality, though.

There's just nothing special to it. The cast is average (elf is cute tho), the world is classic fantasy, the magic system is the only thing that I became invested in, cause of all the wrong reasons: I liked Serie, the mages institution, the demons, the difference between elves' long lives and humans' short ones.

But sadly, these moments (which from now on I will refer to as "the plot") are sparse; instead, you're supposed to understand that connections and people are what make magic, well... "magical" (Frieren favorite spell yada yada) and that demons are just "evil", and then stuff yourself with 15+ episodes of ... generic quests for nameless npcs, the main trio being a bit to much between neurodivergent and outright ChatGPT, and tons of flashbacks (it gets really old real fast, plus I now know more about Himmel the Hero than about my own mother). I liked Flame tho, Flame is cool.

Look, I know treasuring people and their short time on this earth is important, I can get behind it as a motive (why), but I'm not going to cry over and over about it, nor can I accept that as a substitute for a plot (what).

I recently watched Houseki no Kuni; it shares similar themes (long lives, treasuring others), but what a different experience it was. There was an actual plot there, and a way to develop it.

WHY IS IT BORING?
- It relies too much on sentimental predisposition (I'm not as sad as I'm bored, give me something to pay attention to !!)
- It's absolute good vs absolute evil (ok I get it, demons are bad, it's just they look so cool and seem very interesting :c !!)
- Nothing tragic is ever going to happen (death, and I don't count generic pj introduced and killed in the same flashback as tragedy !! )
- Basically, there is little to no plot.

WHY DID I WATCH IT?
- To see if they would give us more of "the plot". They didn't.
