Kimetsu no Yaiba

Ever since the death of his father, the burden of supporting the family has fallen upon Tanjirou Kamado's shoulders. Though living impoverished on a remote mountain, the Kamado family are able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and happy life. One day, Tanjirou decides to go down to the local village to make a little money selling charcoal. On his way back, night falls, forcing Tanjirou to take shelter in the house of a strange man, who warns him of the existence of flesh-eating demons that lurk in the woods at night.

When he finally arrives back home the next day, he is met with a horrifying sight—his whole family has been slaughtered. Worse still, the sole survivor is his sister Nezuko, who has been turned into a bloodthirsty demon. Consumed by rage and hatred, Tanjirou swears to avenge his family and stay by his only remaining sibling. Alongside the mysterious group calling themselves the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjirou will do whatever it takes to slay the demons and protect the remnants of his beloved sister's humanity.

"The animation that changed anime" might sound like an exaggeration, but in the case of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it's easy to understand where that feeling comes from.

The work takes a relatively simple premise and transforms it into something extremely impactful thanks to its execution. Set in Taishō-era Japan, the story presents a world where demons (called Oni) lurk in the shadows and feed on humans. To combat them, there is a dedicated organization: the Demon Slayer Corps. It is within this scenario that we follow Tanjiro Kamado, a protagonist driven by tragedy, but also by a rare empathy.

After having his family brutally massacred ... and seeing his sister, Nezuko Kamado, transformed into a demon, Tanjiro begins a journey that mixes revenge, hope, and redemption. The story's structure is straightforward, without major complications, but this has never been a problem; on the contrary. The clarity of the narrative makes everything more accessible, allowing anyone, even without anime experience, to quickly become involved. Much of this is due to the characters' charisma. Tanjiro is an easy protagonist to like, not because he's the strongest, but because of his humanity. Alongside him, figures like Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira bring a balance between comedy, intensity, and emotion. This combination creates a dynamic that works very well and helped transform the work into a global phenomenon, something visible in the absurd number of fans, cosplays, and dedicated communities around the world.

But let's get to the point that truly put Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba on another level: the animation.

Ufotable's work is simply spectacular. It's not just "beautiful," it's carefully directed, with an impressive combination of 2D and 3D effects, dynamic lighting, and extremely fluid fight choreography. Each confrontation feels like a visual spectacle, with a highlight being the use of breathing styles, which transform blows into true works of art in motion.

Many people compare the technical level of the work to the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works or Fate/Zero franchises, also from Ufotable, but here the studio has achieved something even more popular and accessible. It's the kind of anime that impresses even those who have never watched anything in the genre.

Of course, the work doesn't reinvent shonen. Many elements are familiar: a journey of growth, progressively stronger villains, bonds of friendship and overcoming challenges. But the difference lies in how all this is presented. The direction, the pacing, and the visual care elevate a simple story to something memorable.

In the end, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is exactly what you see: a fun, charismatic, visually impeccable, and extremely easy-to-follow shonen. And perhaps that's why it has become one of the biggest gateways for new anime fans in recent years.

Whether for the story, the characters, or the visual spectacle, it's a work that is well worth watching.

“A animação que mudou os animes” pode soar como exagero mas, no caso de Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, dá pra entender perfeitamente de onde vem essa sensação.

A obra pega uma premissa relativamente simples e transforma em algo extremamente impactante graças à sua execução. Ambientada no Japão da era Taishō, a história apresenta um mundo onde demônios (os chamados Oni) se escondem nas sombras e se alimentam de humanos. Para combatê-los, existe uma organização dedicada: o Corpo de Caçadores de Demônios. É dentro desse cenário que acompanhamos Tanjiro Kamado, um protagonista movido por tragédia, mas também por uma empatia rara.

Após ter sua família brutalmente massacrada e ver sua irmã, Nezuko Kamado, transformada em um demônio, Tanjiro inicia uma jornada que mistura vingança, esperança e redenção. A estrutura da história é direta, sem grandes complicações, mas isso nunca foi um problema, pelo contrário. A clareza da narrativa torna tudo mais acessível, permitindo que qualquer pessoa, mesmo sem experiência com anime, consiga se envolver rapidamente.

E muito disso se deve ao carisma dos personagens. Tanjiro é um protagonista fácil de gostar, não por ser o mais forte, mas por sua humanidade. Ao seu lado, figuras como Zenitsu Agatsuma e Inosuke Hashibira trazem equilíbrio entre comédia, intensidade e emoção. Esse conjunto cria uma dinâmica que funciona muito bem e que ajudou a transformar a obra em um fenômeno global, algo visível na quantidade absurda de fãs, cosplays e comunidades dedicadas ao redor do mundo.

Mas vamos ao ponto que realmente colocou Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba em outro patamar: a animação.

O trabalho da Ufotable é simplesmente espetacular. Não é só “bonito”, é cuidadosamente dirigido, com uma combinação impressionante de efeitos 2D e 3D, iluminação dinâmica e coreografias de luta extremamente fluidas. Cada confronto parece um espetáculo visual, com destaque para o uso dos estilos de respiração, que transformam golpes em verdadeiras obras de arte em movimento.

Muita gente compara o nível técnico da obra com a franquia Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works ou Fate/Zero, também da Ufotable, mas aqui o estúdio conseguiu algo ainda mais popular e acessível. É aquele tipo de anime que impressiona até quem nunca assistiu nada do gênero.

Claro, a obra não reinventa o shonen. Muitos elementos são familiares: jornada de crescimento, vilões progressivamente mais fortes, laços de amizade e superação. Mas o diferencial está em como tudo isso é apresentado. A direção, o ritmo e o cuidado visual elevam uma história simples a algo memorável.

No fim das contas, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba é exatamente o que se vê: um shonen divertido, carismático, visualmente impecável e extremamente fácil de acompanhar. E talvez por isso mesmo tenha se tornado uma das maiores portas de entrada para novos fãs de anime nos últimos anos.

Seja pela história, pelos personagens ou pelo espetáculo visual, é uma obra que vale muito a pena.

Recomendo muito.

Mixed Feelings

I definitely think this anime started off really slow, and in my own opinion boring. But it certainly ramped up towards the end of the season, it helps to latch onto a character to get through it. This is also an anime i've dubbed 'anime of misery and despair', every episode is misery inducing for no good reason! The animation style was insane though, very pleasing to the eye and not at all jarring, and the voice work in the english dub wasnt cringe like it can be in other anime. Again with the animation, the stylization and the art style were INSANEEEE, very beautiful. ...

Swamp demon is my princess.

Flashy fights, amazing visuals, and great production quality from Ufotable. It also has the formula of a generic and mediocre shonen story. Kimetsu no Yaiba is probably the most overrated and cliché’ Shonen anime I’ve ever watched. On the outside, it’s a visual spectacle; underneath, it’s a mid story that recycles a lot of the common tropes you would see in other anime. It’s also served with cringe comic relief and a heaping side of fan service (I’m looking at you Entertainment District Art). This anime has every shonen trope you could ever imagine; a training arc, an exam arc, a meeting with the first ... Akatsuki member arc, Akatsuki members, sword techniques, cheap comic-relief, and excessive fan-service by the second-half of Season 2 (yes Season 2 is split into a movie and a TV series for some reason). I don’t know what else to say except: this anime is overrated, mediocre, and overhyped for a lot of obvious reasons. To start off, the sword techniques and the principles behind them are barely explained. All I got from this anime’s power system is that good breathing is key to getting stronger. That’s it. The show never explained how Tanjiro mastered ten sword techniques. He just dodged traps on a mountain for two years. I feel like Tanjiro just executes a random sword technique depending on what the plot needs. During the Final Selection Arc, Tanjiro slices the head of a powerful enemy because “random bs go!” It’s like the showrunners were like, “Hey, here’s a new sword technique that Tanjiro happened to learn for this specific situation. Don’t worry about how or when he learned it. Just look at the pretty water animation.” In addition, two of Tanjiro’s friends are annoying and cringe. One of them can only use one technique while he’s unconscious; the other is a buff dude with the face of a cute girl. Both of them contribute nothing to the show except constant yelling, whining, and cheap comic-relief. One arc is them falling into an Orochimaru trick-house, another arc where rest inside an inn, and another arc where they fight Sasori from Temu. The last arc is them meeting the elite jonins of the Demon Slayer Corp. I think it would have been better if Giyu was the one who accompanied Tanjiro and Nezuko instead of Zenitsu and Inosuke. As for Season 2, the main villain in the Mugen Train Arc is basically a guy who can use genjutsu to control people’s dreams; meanwhile, the Entertainment District Arc is chock full of fan-service and plot armor asspulls (also the Hashira for this arc is a certified creep who owns three wives and smacked the butt of an underage girl). It’s either people’s standards for fresh quality anime have degraded over time, or people just consume every mediocre piece of media if the production is good. The only reason why I lasted until the Entertainment District Arc is because I wanted to give Season 2 a fair chance - that maybe Season 1 was just testing the waters. Overall, I really have nothing else to say. It’s just a very generic shonen anime with mediocre writing, mediocre characters, and a very good production team behind it. It would have been nice if Ufotable just invested their time and resources into One Punch Man Season 3 instead of this slop.
