Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken

Thirty-seven-year-old Satoru Mikami is a typical corporate worker, who is perfectly content with his monotonous lifestyle in Tokyo, other than failing to nail down a girlfriend even once throughout his life. In the midst of a casual encounter with his colleague, he falls victim to a random assailant on the streets and is stabbed. However, while succumbing to his injuries, a peculiar voice echoes in his mind, and recites a bunch of commands which the dying man cannot make sense of.

When Satoru regains consciousness, he discovers that he has reincarnated as a goop of slime in an unfamiliar realm. In doing so, he acquires newfound skills—notably, the power to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. He then stumbles upon the sealed Catastrophe-level monster "Storm Dragon" Veldora who had been sealed away for the past 300 years for devastating a town to ashes. Sympathetic to his predicament, Satoru befriends him, promising to assist in destroying the seal. In return, Veldora bestows upon him the name Rimuru Tempest to grant him divine protection.

Now, liberated from the mundanities of his past life, Rimuru embarks on a fresh journey with a distinct goal in mind. As he grows accustomed to his new physique, his gooey antics ripple throughout the world, gradually altering his fate.

Some isekai throw their protagonist into another world to conquer it. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime does something much more charming: it lets its protagonist slowly build a home.

Isekai anime are more prominent than ever now in 2026, and a lot of modern series owe at least some of their popularity to the success that Slime helped bring to the genre. This first season is such a strong example of why the genre works when it is done well. It has the fantasy setting, the new-world discovery, the overpowered main character, and the fun power progression, but what really makes it stand ... out is how warm and genuinely enjoyable it is to watch Rimuru grow into his role in this world.

From Rimuru’s entrance into this new life, all the way through the first season’s 24 episodes, we get to see him slowly earn the trust of different monster races and communities. What starts as one slime trying to understand his new circumstances gradually becomes something much bigger. Rimuru is not just trying to survive. He is building relationships, solving problems, creating bonds, and becoming a sort of friend and leader to all.

That is honestly one of the best parts of the series.

It is genuinely nice to see Rimuru constantly improving the lives of others and then watching those same people repay his kindness tenfold. There is something very satisfying about the way the show handles community-building. Instead of focusing only on battles or personal power, it spends a lot of time showing how trust is earned. Rimuru helps people, listens to them, protects them, and treats them with respect. In return, they become loyal not because they are forced to, but because they believe in him.

That makes the world feel alive in a really comforting way.

While I am still getting more entrenched in the isekai genre, I can already say that this first season of Slime is a great starting point for anyone who is new to the genre, or even new to anime as a whole. It is approachable, fun, colorful, and easy to get invested in. The worldbuilding is interesting without being overwhelming, the characters are likable, and the pacing does a good job of balancing action, comedy, fantasy politics, and slice-of-life moments.

I have seen some people complain that the series has episodes where a lot of time is spent on characters simply conversing. But honestly, I think that is part of what makes the show work. A lot of the best anime understand that characters need time to interact with one another. Not every episode needs to be battle after battle. Sometimes the most important scenes are the ones where characters sit down, talk, plan, joke around, build trust, or simply exist together in the world.

Those moments matter.

They make the action hit harder because you actually care about the people involved. They make the village-building and alliances feel earned. They give Rimuru’s journey more weight because we are not just watching him become stronger — we are watching him become responsible for others.

That is where That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime really shines. It is a power fantasy, yes, but it is also a comfort fantasy. It is about creating a place where different people and races can come together and build something better. There is action, humor, and adventure, but there is also a genuine feeling of kindness at the center of the story.

Rimuru is an easy protagonist to root for because his strength is not just about how powerful he becomes. It is about how he uses that power. He is smart, funny, adaptable, and surprisingly compassionate. Watching him navigate this new world, make allies, and slowly change the lives of everyone around him is what makes the season so enjoyable.

Season 1 of Slime is a great introduction to the series and a strong example of what makes isekai so appealing when the genre is handled with care. It has charm, humor, worldbuilding, memorable characters, and a protagonist who feels genuinely fun to follow.

I am genuinely excited for Season 2 and to see what the rest of this series brings to the table.

For now, Season 1 was a great ride — cozy, entertaining, action-filled when it needed to be, and full of heart.

And now, I think it’s time to watch the OVAs and jump into Season 2.

Mixed Feelings

It's certainly puzzling when a 'standard' anime receives high acclaim despite doing nothing to distinguish itself from its competition. And what exactly did Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (TSSDK) do that cannot be found in any other isekai anime to deserve such a high score on MAL?

Let's see, it has:
• Reincarnation
• MC being surrounded by beautiful women with large breasts
• MC being surrounded by children
• MC being a pervert
• Extremely powerful MC
• But his power is often underestimated
• MC is a hero!
... • Self-awareness (it's basically a satire)
• Medieval fantasy setting
• Mini-bosses, so many mini-bosses!
• Lots of races to not care about
• Lots of random – and laughably weak – kingdoms not to care about
And so on…

However, if I had been asked to guess the correct anime based on this list, with each wrong answer revealing another hint, I would have had no idea that it was TSSDK rather than, say, Re:Zero, Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!, Mushoku Tensei, or any other anime in which the main character is reincarnated, resurrected, or otherwise transported from one state of being to another (SAO, Overlord, Log Horizon, etc.). In fact, the hints probably wouldn't give it away until somewhere between the 50th and 60th hint, when it finally mentions the most unique idea the anime has to offer – the idea that the protagonist is, well, a slime.

Very imaginative. No doubt. But is it really 8.13/10-level imaginative when we have a series about someone being reincarnated as a freaking vending machine that, despite all that, received the measly rating of 6.43? Not in my humble opinion.

Imagine a boring protagonist that does nothing really interasting the entire anime besides giving names to monsters.
Thats literally all this anime is about, nothing deep enough to make you care about anything that happens in all 3 seasons and movie, the only thing is that is cool to watch someone in a isekai with rpg like system.
Every character side history is complete cliche in every aspect, nothing really new or that really make you care about something happening, and you dont care if they are in a "dangerous" situation, the godlike protagonist will just save the day and was everything for nothing anyway.
I really ... dont get it how people like this so much but i can see people that dont care that much of what is being shown loving this silly cliche history.
The protagonist is really bad, is not like he is dislikeable or something, he is dog water in writing, he is not cool, not funny, he is just blend and strong.

IF YOU ARE SOMEONE EASY TO PLEASE, maybe you will have a good time watching this anime, if not you will just waste your time.
