Dragon Ball GT

Emperor Pilaf finally has his hands on the Black Star Dragon Balls after years of searching, which are said to be twice as powerful as Earth's normal ones. Pilaf is about to make his wish for world domination when he is interrupted by Gokuu Son. As a result, Pilaf flubs his wish and accidentally turns Gokuu back into a child.

After the wish is granted, the Black Star Dragon Balls scatter across the galaxy. However, Gokuu discovers that they will cause the Earth to explode unless they are all brought back within a year. Uniting with his granddaughter Pan and a young adult Trunks, Gokuu sets off on an adventure through the universe to find the Black Star Dragon Balls and save his planet from destruction.

Dragon Ball GT is a mixed but still entertaining continuation of the Dragon Ball franchise that experiments with new ideas, space adventures, and emotional character moments while carrying both strong highlights and noticeable inconsistencies.
What makes Dragon Ball GT interesting is its attempt to return to a more adventure-driven structure, especially in the early episodes. Goku, Pan, and Trunks travel across space in search of the Black Star Dragon Balls, giving the series a more exploratory and “classic journey” feeling similar to early Dragon Ball. This change of tone is refreshing after the constant earth-focused battles of Dragon Ball Z.
Pan is one of the most notable ... additions. As Goku’s granddaughter, she brings energy, attitude, and emotional contrast to the group. While she is often impulsive and frustrated with Goku’s relaxed personality, her presence helps ground the journey emotionally and adds family dynamics to the story.
Trunks also plays a key role early on, acting as the more responsible and strategic member of the group. His interactions with Goku and Pan help balance the team’s dynamics during their space travels.
One of the strongest aspects of Dragon Ball GT is its willingness to explore different tones. It shifts between adventure, comedy, and serious action arcs, which creates variety throughout the series.
The Baby Saga is widely considered the strongest part of GT. Baby as a villain introduces a unique concept of body possession and revenge against Saiyans, leading to some of the series’ most intense and dramatic moments. Vegeta’s role in this arc is especially important, adding emotional weight and character depth.
Super Saiyan 4 is another major highlight. Its design is widely praised for its more primal, beast-like aesthetic, standing out from previous transformations. The concept of returning to Saiyan roots adds thematic depth to Goku’s evolution.
The Shadow Dragon Saga also introduces an interesting idea: the consequences of overusing the Dragon Balls. This arc adds a mythological and symbolic layer to the series, exploring balance and unintended consequences.
Visually, GT reflects its era with traditional animation. While not as polished as later series, it still delivers solid action scenes and expressive character moments, especially during major transformations and battles.
The soundtrack is another strong point, with memorable themes that enhance both emotional and action-heavy scenes. The opening song in particular is iconic and widely associated with nostalgia for the franchise.
Of course, Dragon Ball GT is often criticized for inconsistent pacing, uneven storytelling, and underdeveloped ideas. Some arcs feel rushed, and certain characters are underutilized or inconsistent compared to their Z counterparts.
However, despite its flaws, the series still delivers memorable moments, creative concepts, and emotional highlights that keep it engaging for fans of the franchise.
Overall, I gave Dragon Ball GT an 8/10 because it is a flawed but enjoyable continuation of the Dragon Ball universe. It experiments with adventure storytelling, introduces memorable transformations like Super Saiyan 4, and delivers several strong arcs, even if its execution is inconsistent.

Dragon Ball GT: The Worst of the Best or the Best of the Worst?

The nostalgia effect in Dragon Ball GT, for me, is extremely positive. It has always been something memorable, mainly because I remember very well watching the final fight of the anime and seeing the SSJ4 transformation for the first time. These memories are etched in my mind as good recollections, even more so because my first contact with any Dragon Ball-related item was precisely with a Baby Vegeta action figure. That's why I confidently affirm that, for many fans, the nostalgia factor directly influences the experience with the work; it makes everything ... more fun and makes the overall assessment less harsh. It was no different for me: if it weren't for this nostalgic attachment, my rating would certainly be lower.

Narrative:
Because it is something totally original (that is, not adapted from any manga or previous material), the story ends up not being the best. In fact, it's quite mediocre. The ideas behind the three great sagas of GT are really good (especially the last one, involving the concept of the corrupted Dragon Balls). All these proposals were innovative and managed to greatly expand the Dragon Ball universe in curious and even ambitious ways. However, all this praise is only for the ideas, because the execution is another story. The way these sagas were developed leaves much to be desired. After Goku achieves the SSJ4 transformation (which happens in the very first major saga), the power scale becomes extremely inconsistent. There are no more relevant transformations besides SSJ4 itself, and several events are lazily justified, especially at the beginning of the Baby saga. Some narrative solutions are so poorly executed that they end up breaking the audience's engagement.

Animation/Design:
The animation, on the other hand, is really very good, even more so for the time, maintaining the characteristic style that made Dragon Ball visually striking. There's no way to say the animation is bad, because it simply isn't. The designs are, without a doubt, the strongest point of Dragon Ball GT (probably one of the main reasons why so many people still have affection for this phase). The villains and transformations present extremely innovative visual concepts. The lore behind the SSJ4 transformation itself is rich, creative, and, in my opinion, represents the most interesting form ever created within the franchise. There's also no ignoring how iconic Baby Vegeta's design is: it perfectly conveys the particular tone of GT, something a bit strange, a bit different, but very striking.

Conclusion:

In the end, I'm in the middle regarding the work. If it weren't for SSJ4, my score would certainly be 4. It may seem like a strange conclusion, but it makes sense: as good as the animation and designs are, this doesn't hold up against a poorly executed story. It's sad to realize this because Dragon Ball GT has excellent ideas, but suffers from weak execution and questionable narrative choices. In the end, considering everything—nostalgia, visuals, ideas, and flaws—my score for the work is a 5.

O efeito nostalgia em Dragon Ball GT, para mim, é extremamente positivo. Sempre foi algo marcante, principalmente porque lembro muito bem de assistir à luta final do anime e de ver pela primeira vez a transformação em SSJ4. Essas memórias ficaram registradas como boas lembranças, ainda mais porque meu primeiro contato com qualquer item relacionado a Dragon Ball foi justamente com um boneco do Baby Vegeta. É por isso que afirmo com convicção que, para muitos fãs, o fator nostalgia acaba influenciando diretamente a experiência com a obra, ela torna tudo mais divertido e faz com que a avaliação geral seja menos severa. Comigo não foi diferente: se não fosse esse apego nostálgico, com certeza minha nota seria menor.

Narrativa:
Por se tratar de algo totalmente original (ou seja, não adaptado de nenhum mangá ou material prévio) a história acaba não sendo das melhores. Na verdade, ela é bem mediana. As ideias por trás das três grandes sagas de GT são realmente boas (especialmente a última, envolvendo o conceito das Esferas do Dragão corrompidas). Todas essas propostas foram inovadoras e conseguiram expandir bastante o universo de Dragon Ball de maneiras curiosas e até ambiciosas. Porém, todo esse elogio vale somente para as ideias, porque a execução é outra história. O modo como essas sagas foram desenvolvidas deixa bastante a desejar. Depois que Goku alcança a transformação em SSJ4 (o que acontece logo na primeira grande saga) a escala de poder se torna extremamente inconsistente. Não há mais transformações relevantes além do próprio SSJ4, e vários acontecimentos são justificados de maneira preguiçosa, especialmente no início da saga Baby. Algumas soluções narrativas são tão mal executadas que acabam quebrando o envolvimento do público.

Animação/Design:
A animação, por outro lado, é realmente muito boa, ainda mais para a época, mantendo o estilo característico que tornou Dragon Ball visualmente marcante. Não há como afirmar que a animação é ruim, porque ela simplesmente não é. Os designs são, sem dúvida, o ponto mais forte de Dragon Ball GT (provavelmente um dos principais motivos pelos quais tantas pessoas ainda têm carinho por essa fase). Os vilões e as transformações apresentam conceitos visuais extremamente inovadores. A própria lore por trás da transformação em SSJ4 é rica, criativa e, na minha opinião, representa a forma mais interessante já criada dentro da franquia. Também não há como ignorar o quão icônico é o design do Baby Vegeta: ele transmite perfeitamente o tom particular de GT, algo meio estranho, meio diferente, mas muito marcante.

Conclusão:
No fim das contas, fico no meio termo em relação à obra. Se não fosse pelo SSJ4, minha nota certamente seria 4. Pode parecer uma conclusão estranha, mas faz sentido: por mais que a animação e os designs sejam realmente bons, isso não se sustenta diante de uma história mal executada. É triste perceber isso porque Dragon Ball GT tem ideias excelentes, mas sofre com execuções fracas e escolhas narrativas questionáveis. No final, considerando tudo — nostalgia, visual, ideias e falhas — minha nota para a obra é um 5.

Oh boy, Dragon Ball GT is one of the most touchy subjects in the online Dragon Ball community. I still remember when it was super cool to universally hate on GT for basically everything it did to "ruin" Dragon Ball Z.

Nowadays, with Dragon Ball Super, there's a very vocal crowd—let’s call them a vocal minority—that heavily defends GT and at the very least claims it’s better than Super.

On a personal level, I’ve never really hated GT. Admittedly, before I knew it wasn’t canon, there were things I liked about it, but something always felt off—even from the beginning.

The elephant in the room is that making ... Goku a kid again for the whole series was a terrible idea. It might have worked for one arc, maybe up until the end of the Baby Saga, but for the entire 60+ episodes? I get that the writers were trying to blend the best aspects of OG Dragon Ball and DBZ, but lazily making Goku a kid for most of the series was just not the way to do it.

That said, I don’t hate each major arc conceptually. The way the Black Star Dragon Balls were introduced was lazy and barely explained, but I do like the idea of a small group traveling through space to find them. The execution, though? Not great.

The Baby Arc was a cool way to bring Saiyan lore back into the story, with the Tuffles seeking revenge for their stolen technology. Baby being able to possess people was a creepy ability, clearly an attempt to escalate Majin Buu’s regeneration gimmick.

Before Toriyama gave his own canon vision of Hell in Resurrection ‘F,’ the idea of villains escaping Hell to take over Earth had potential in the Super 17 Arc. It could have been fun fan service.

The Shadow Dragon Arc is probably the best idea conceptually—going back to the overuse of the Dragon Balls and how it should have consequences beyond just waiting a year to use them again.

But at the end of the day, Dragon Ball GT is the ultimate case of great concepts with incredibly sloppy execution.

While I liked the idea of searching for the Dragon Balls in space, the Black Star Dragon Balls came out of nowhere, so I had no reason to care about them. Outside of Goku, I didn’t care for the other two characters on the journey—Pan was annoying, and Trunks had no real personality. GT tried to copy Toriyama’s OG Dragon Ball adventure vibe, but most of the planets they visited were just boring. There’s a reason the original FUNimation dub skipped over this whole section.

The Baby Arc was probably the least flawed in terms of pacing. The idea of Baby taking over the Z Fighters and Goku having to fight corrupted versions of them was solid. But the way it was done made Baby way too overpowered—more so than even Majin Buu. This was also where GT fully became "The Goku Show." Uub being Goku’s pupil amounted to nothing, and his fusion with Fat Buu was dumb. Also, while I liked the idea of bringing back Saiyan tails, the way Goku and Vegeta conveniently got theirs back through magic or random pulling was just ridiculous. These guys are well into their 40s at this point.

Speaking of transformations, this is where Super Saiyan 4 (and to a lesser extent, Baby’s Golden Oozaru form) was introduced. SSJ4 just doesn’t feel like a natural evolution from Super Saiyan 3. SSJ3 had the long hair but still fit the theme, while SSJ4’s weird red monkey design just feels... off. And let’s be real—SSJ4 was just an excuse to bring back adult Goku temporarily because they knew fans wanted it. Golden Oozaru could’ve been cool, but the explanation for merging it with Super Saiyan was weak. And randomly killing off Piccolo? That was just unnecessary.

Then there’s the Super 17 Arc. There’s a reason this is considered the worst arc by far. As I said earlier, the idea of villains escaping Hell had potential, but the execution was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu somehow making two Android 17s and fusing them to become stronger than Goku? When the original 17 wasn’t even that powerful to begin with? Makes no sense. Goku getting trapped in Hell was dumb, and Piccolo, who shouldn’t have died earlier, got screwed over again just to give him a reason to help Goku escape. It doesn’t help that this was the shortest arc, so there’s almost nothing good to say about it.

The Shadow Dragon Saga is the least bad overall. I love the idea of overusing the Dragon Balls having real consequences, and giving each Shadow Dragon a connection to past wishes was a great touch. There were some fun fights, especially with Nova Shenron and SSJ4 Gogeta vs. Omega Shenron. But half of the Shadow Dragons were lame, with gimmicky fights that relied more on luck than strategy. Nova Shenron was the only one with real charisma, while even Syn/Omega Shenron felt bland for a final boss. And Kid Goku pulling out a Super Spirit Bomb as the final attack—just like in the Buu Saga—felt like a cheap, unearned knockoff. They even had a fusion again, only for it not to be the final move. It just felt like the writers had run out of ideas.

And these are just my critiques of each arc. I haven’t even touched on the bigger issue—out of all Dragon Ball media, GT is the worst when it comes to making it "The Goku Show." At least Dragon Ball Super gives Vegeta stuff to do, and even some side characters get moments.

Sadly, the best thing I can say about GT is that it has a great opening, "Dan Dan Kokoro" (and to a lesser extent, the FUNimation "Grand Tour" rap, which is hilarious to laugh at). It’s just unfortunate that for every good idea GT had, it fumbled the execution every single time.

It’s not completely unwatchable, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re really attached to Super Saiyan 4—which seems to be the main reason people like it. That, and maybe the idea that Goku is more mature here compared to Super.
