Shingeki no Kyojin

Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called Titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal Titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Eren, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and his childhood friend Armin Arlert join the brutal war against the Titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.

The Reddit hype was real. I couldn’t stop watching AOT and kept going through 9–10 episodes at a time without noticing how fast the time passed. Finished it in two days and I’m already looking forward to the next season.

From the very first episode, u get a brief sense of normalcy, and then everything collapses into chaos within minutes. The appearance of the Colossal Titan just completely resets the tone of the story.

What really kept me hooked were the cliffhangers. Almost every episode ends at a point where stopping feels unnatural. I kept telling myself just one more episode but it never ... actually stayed at one. The show is structured in a way that constantly feeds curiosity, whether it’s through unanswered questions, sudden reveals, or shifting situations. Even when the pacing slows down slightly in the middle, it doesn’t lose its grip. Instead of feeling like filler, those sections build tension and expand the world, making the later payoffs more effective. By the time things start accelerating again, I was already too invested to care about the earlier slowdown.

What surprised me most was how consistently the show maintains tension. There’s almost no sense of safety at any point, and that unpredictability is what makes it so easy to binge. On top of that, the characters feel grounded enough that their reactions and decisions carry weight, which adds to the overall impact. It definitely deserves its spot at #1 on MAL. For me, it’s one of those rare shows that fully lives up to the hype and delivers an experience that’s both gripping and memorable from start to finish.

Mixed Feelings

Season 1 picks up near the end, but the first half was a slog to get through. If it wasn't for the fact i agreed to see the whole season for a friend, I wouldn't have ever gotten to any good parts the season has. Season 2 seems promising, though I am unsure whether I will continue watching as there are plenty of other shows that are good from episode 1. It seems like it's setting up something interesting, just whether sitting through at least 12 episodes of boredom is worth it or not.
More stuff for mal so i can post this:
art style - not ... great, though the cg works quite well in battles
characters - fairly 1 dimensional so far, hopefully season 2 might change that
world building - the world building is interesting with the odm gear being an interesting battle mechanic.

A series with one of the greatest beginnings in the genre and an immediately engaging premise, but by the time the basement is uncovered, it all falls apart until it gets to one of the worst endings I've ever witnessed. The ending makes the entire story worthless. It also destroys Erin's character because the writer desperately wanted to seem "deep" and "thought provoking". What should've stayed as a simple good vs evil story devolves into infuriating character choices, the standard titans themselves being made irrelevant, and nothing is accomplished in the end. I've never witnessed a story assassinate itself to this degree before, and I ... am unsure if I ever will again.

Doesn't help that this was all padded out for as long as possible in between releases to squeeze more money out of the property before the ending made it all mean nothing. Frankly, I am stunned that the public perception to the ending is as positive as it is.
